The Villanovan and Etruscan collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts not only represent an important source of Classical Antiquity in the United States, but also serve as a historical model of how such artifacts were acquired by large American museums from the late-nineteenth through mid-twentieth centuries. These collections provide museum visitors, scholars, and students with an indepth view into one of antiquity's most fascinating peoples, the Etruscans and their predecessors. Henry Hunter Calvert was a British consul in Alexandria from 1857 to 1882, at which date he and many others fled from the riots in the city. The consulate was sacked, destroying Calvert's collections, but an annotated list of the Greek amphora stamps had been sent to the British Museum, published here for the first time.

The cave was a sanctuary dedicated to the Minoan and Greek goddess Eileithyia, patron of childbirth and motherhood. The Aegyptiaca of the Minoan-Mycenaean era on Crete were a tangible sign of the political and economic relations between the Aegean rulers and the Egyptian royal court. Certainly some of the Egyptian kings' scarabs that reached Crete from the reign of Amenophis III to the end of the Eighteenth Dynasty are to be explained by official Egyptian-Cretan relations.
