Nahj al-Balāghah: The Wisdom and Eloquence of ʿAlī : A Parallel English-Arabic Text /

: Nahj al-Balāghah , the celebrated compendium of orations, letters, and sayings of Ê¿AlÄ« ibn AbÄ« Ṭālib (d. 40/661) compiled by al-SharÄ«f al-Raá¸ōÄ« (d. 406/1015), is a masterpiece of Arabic literature and Islamic wisdom studied and memorized avidly and continually for over a thousand years. Showcasing Ê¿AlÄ«'s life and travails in his own words, it also transcribes his profound reflections on piety and virtue, and on just and compassionate governance. Tahera Qutbuddin's meticulously researched critical edition based on the earliest 5th/11th-century manuscripts, with a lucid, annotated facing-page translation, brings to the modern reader the power and beauty of this influential text, and confirms the aptness of Raá¸ōÄ«'s title, "The Way of Eloquence."

Nag Hammadi Codices XI, XII, XIII /

: This volume presents critical editions of three of the most fragmentary codices in the Nag Hammadi Library. Their nine tractates are presented in an English translation with critically edited transcriptions of Coptic texts, including introductions and notes. A complete set of indices is provided for Coptic and Greek words, proper names, ancient texts and authors, and modern authors. The contents of these three ancient books reflect the rich diversity of the Library as a whole. They include a fragmentary (and apparently non-Christian) revelation descent narrative ( Hypsiphrone ); a non-Christian Sethian text reflecting heavy platonizing influence ( Allogenes ); Hellenistic Greek wisdom literature ( Sentence of Sextus ); a non-christian Sethian text, secondarily Christianized ( Trimorphic Protennoia ); Valentinian Gnosticism ( A Valentinian Exposition ); a Christian-Gnostic tractate with Valentinian affinities ( The Interpretation of Knowledge ). A Christian-Gnostic (perhaps Valentinian) homily on the gospel (the Gospel of Truth ); the first page of On the Origin of the World (completely preserved in NHC II) and an identified fragmentary tractate with ethical content. There are also five Valentinian liturgical supplements appended to Allogenes . The publication of these religio-philosophical materials from Nag Hammadi provides the scholar and interested reader with critical editions of texts that help to fill in background and context of gnostic origins, and that shed light on the interaction among early Christianity and gnostic movements in antiquity.

This book is a comprehensive discussion of the Mesopotamian Kiutu incantation-prayers, containing many previously untranslated texts as well as for the first time precisely defining the literary typology and describing the ritual context in which it was used.
What are the Kiutu incantation-prayers? What are their distinctive features in comparison to other types of incantation-prayers? Making use of many previously unpublished texts, this book offers the first complete philological edition of a corpus of Sumerian literature often underrepresented in scholarship. The book examines this textual typology specifically addressed to the Sun god finding its place within the broader history of Mesopotamian literature and religion. Uniquely, this typology of incantation-prayers connects the movement of the sun in the sky to the time of day when it was performed, giving us a rare glimpse into the practical realities of Mesopotamian religious practice.

Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible /

: Customers in North America who wish to purchase this publication, please contact Augsburg Fortress Press. First published in 1992, Emanuel Tov's Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible has rapidly established itself as the authoritative reference work for all those engaged in the study of the text of the Hebrew Bible. This thoroughly revised second edition will be welcomed by students and scholars alike. A wide range of readers will find this book accessible and indispensable. Emanuel Tov offers extensive descriptions of the major witnesses to the text of the Hebrew Bible-the Hebrew texts from Qumran, the Septuagint, the Masoretic Text-as well as the Aramaic Targumim, the Syriac translations, the Vulgate, and others. Special attention is given to the exegetical aspects of the textual transmission, literary issues, and the problem of the original shape of the biblical text. Praise for the First Edition: "Emanuel Tov is preeminent in the world in the field of Septuagint studies. This is a solid and durable work which, given its technical character, is written in a readable way." Frank Moore Cross, Harvard University "Nowhere else can you find such a thorough presentation of how the Bible was transmitted in Second Temple times. This excellently written handbook represents a major step forward for biblical studies." Lawrence Schiffman, New York University "History will surely regard Emanuel Tov's monumental work as the definitive discussion of textual criticism of this generation. A 'must-have' for any serious scholar of the Bible!" Sidnie A. White, University of Nebraska "The basic reference work on the textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible for at least the next decade. This is a magisterial work which is badly needed and masterfully done." Journal for the Study of Judaism "This book will soon be viewed as a classic of biblical studies." Ralph W. Klein, Journal of Religion "Replete with examples, tables, plates, lucid definitions and explanations, as well as extensive bibliographies, the volume brings together a wealth of information not previously so accessible and makes the theory and practice of textual criticism easily understandable and visually clear." Judith E. Sanderson, Seattle University.

The Haggadah of the Kaifeng Jews of China /

: This comprehensive, textual treatment of the Kaifeng Passover Rite is a significant contribution to the ongoing discussion of the community's origins in particular and to comparative Jewish liturgy in general. The book includes a facsimile of one manuscript and a sample of the other, the full text of the Hebrew/Aramaic and Judeo-Persian Haggadah in Hebrew characters, as well as an English translation. Following a review of the community's history, sources for study, and related scholarly work conducted to date, the languages used in the Haggadah and their backgrounds are discussed in detail. Analysis of the order of the service allows for comparison of the Kaifeng Jewish community's recitation of the Passover liturgy, performance of ritual, and consumption of ceremonial food to other communities in the Jewish Diaspora. The various parts and chapters of the book, including its extensive and meticulous annotations and bibliographical references, provide much fresh and useful material for scholars and readers interested in pre-modern Jewish, Judeo-Persian and Chinese literary traditions and cultures.
