Historical perspectives : from the hasmoneans to bar kokhba in light of the dead sea scrolls.

: The papers published in this volume were presented at the Fourth Orion International Symposium (Jerusalem, 1999), whose focus was Jewish history in light of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The first section, "History of the Jews and Judaism," is devoted to specific topics in Jewish history, such as historical references in the Scrolls, comparative studies between the Scrolls and Josephus, and issues of Jewish nationalism. The second section, "Community and Covenant," comprises studies of community, Jewish law, and the concept of covenant. The third section, "Natural Sciences and the Scrolls," reports on examinations of DNA preserved in leather used for the Scrolls, of dust found in jars from Qumran, of the nature of the stitching of the Scrolls, and of the composition of the pottery found at Qumran.

Questioning the historicity of Jesus : why a philosophical analysis elucidates the historical discourse /

: This volume moves beyond the mainstream scholarly scepticism over the Christ of Faith and considers if there is sufficient evidence to establish the existence of the more mundane Historical Jesus. Using the logical tools of the analytic philosopher, Lataster finds that the relevant sources are unreliable as historical documents, and that the key method of those purporting that the Historical Jesus existed is to appeal to sources that do not exist. Considering an ancient hypothesis suggesting that Jesus began as a celestial messiah that certain Second Temple Jews already believed in, and was later allegorised in the Gospels, Lataster discovers that it is more reasonable to at least be agnostic over Jesus' historicity.

Rhetorical Adaptation in the Greek Historians, Josephus, and Acts vol II : Embedded Speeches, Audience Responses, and Authorial Persuasion /

: A detailed comparative analysis of speaker-audience interactions in Greek historiography, Josephus, and Acts that examines historians' use of speeches as a means of instructing/persuading their readers and highlights Luke's distinctive depiction of the apostles as adaptable yet frequently alienating orators.
Greco-Roman rhetorical theorists insist that speakers must adapt their speeches to their audiences in order to maximize persuasiveness and minimize alienation. Ancient historians adorn their narratives with accounts of attempts at such rhetorical adaptation, the outcomes of which decisively impact the subsequent course of events. These depictions of speaker-audience interactions, moreover, convey crucial didactic/persuasive insights to the historians' own audiences. This monograph presents a detailed comparative analysis of the intra- and extra-textual functions of speeches and audience responses in Greek historiography, Josephus, and Acts, with special emphasis on Luke's distinctive depiction of the apostles as adaptable yet frequently alienating orators.

Hegel's philosophy of the historical religions /

: No topic ever disquieted Hegel more than that of Religion. It haunted him, and he wrestled with it all during his life: from his brilliant youthful writings on spirit of Judaism and Christianity, up until the Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion of 1831. Of the 'Determinate Religions', Hegel wrote many profound and exhilarating philosophical interpretations. This volume brings together a collection of critical essays that discuss Hegel's relation to each of these historical Religions, including the Islam, and (of course) the 'revealed' religion of Christianity (Catholicism and Protestantism). All chapters aim to shed light on the intriguing development of Hegel's conception of the dialectic of Religion. Taken together, they develop a comprehensive view of Hegel's philosophy of the historical Religions. His grandiose and provocative perceptions and 'thought-scapes' enhance the appetite for the - much needed - philosophical appreciation of the phenomenon of religion.

Aposynagōgos and the historical Jesus in John : rethinking the historicity of the Johannine expulsion passages /

: In Aposynagōgos and the Historical Jesus in John , Jonathan Bernier utilizes the critical-realist hermeneutics developed by Bernard Lonergan and Ben F. Meyer to survey historical data relevant to the Johannine expulsion passages (John 9:22, 12:42, 16:2). He evaluates the major two contemporary interpretative traditions regarding these passages, namely that they describe not events of Jesus' lifetime but rather the implementation of the Birkat ha-Minim in the first first-century, or that they describe not historical events at all but serve only to construct Johannine identity. Against both traditions Bernier argues that these passages plausibly describe events that could have happened during Jesus' lifetime.

Faces of God:Images of Devotion in Indo-Muslim Painting, 1500-1800 /

: Assumptions concerning iconophobia in Islam has meant that scholarship has largely failed to situate figural artworks made for South Asia's Muslim audiences within Islamic intellectual and religious histories. Artworks explored in this book were made for people shaped by Muslim devotion and ritual. Central to this story are the royal Mughal siblings, Jahanara Begum and Dara Shikoh, and their spiritual guide Mulla Shah. Among other themes, the book contextualizes artworks made for the imperial siblings by placing them next to their writings, most of which an English reading audience will encounter for the first time.

: The first part of this book contains a selection of Leszek Nowak's (1943-2009) works on non-Marxian historical materialism, which are published here in English for the first time. In these papers, Nowak constructs a dynamic model of religious community, reconstructs historiosophical assumptions of liberalism and considers the methodological status of prognosis of totalitarization of capitalist society. In the second part of the book, new contributions to non-Marxian historical materialism are presented.
