Tradition in social science /

: Tradition in Social Science is the social philosophy written early in life by the jurisprudent who became the preeminent public law jurist in France in the first quarter of the twentieth century, Maurice Hauriou. His work remains prominent in theorizing European Community as well as in Latin American jurisprudence. His studies concern three areas of research: legal theory, social science, and philosophy. In this book Hauriou first focuses on the object and method of the social sciences in a preliminary chapter. The main text is devoted first to a philosophy of history that uses the growth objectively in fraternity, liberty and equality as the criterion for progress; and next to the subjective elements of progress, namely, the recognition of a "pessimistic individualism" in which failure in conduct is to be expected, but is rectified by social institutions. This part closes with the dynamizing of his philosophy of history by evolution and alternation between two phases of social development, namely, middle ages and renaissances. The second part is the philosophy of social science built around social matter, where the dynamic of imitation is the motive force, and three social networks-positive, religious, and metaphysical-specify its consequences. The last of these, the political fabric, is provided with a final chapter of its own. The main doctrinal device that Hauriou developed for use in law was his theory of the institution; this is developed for the first time in the present work.

Living Responsibly: Ethical Issues in Everyday Life /

: \'Everything we do, every decision we make, in every aspect of our lives, affects others, whether or not we think about those effects before acting. Every single move we make has ethical significance. It matters how we behave towards others, including strangers, family and friends; the extent to which we are willing to share what we have; the energy we use in travelling and in heating our homes; where we should shop for food, clothes and the other essentials of modern life. This eBook invites all of us to engage in reflection about these ethical issues of everyday life. Those of us who care about how we affect the world and those with whom we share it will find the issues raised and thoughts offered a source of inspiration. The topics touched upon are wide-ranging, promising innovative ideas for turning the intention to live responsibly into practice. \'

The Social World of the Babylonian Priest /

: In The Social World of the Babylonian Priest , Bastian Still presents a comprehensive study of the priestly community of Borsippa during the Neo-Babylonian and early Persian Empires (ca. 620-484 BCE). By examining patterns of marriage, landholding, moneylending, and friendship, he provides an intimate account of the daily life of the Babylonian priesthood beyond the temple walls and develops a more sophisticated understanding of the organisation of ancient Babylonian society as a whole. Combining the use of social network analysis, anthropological studies, and sociological concepts concerned with kinship, tie strength, social boundaries, and identity formation, Bastian Still's interdisciplinary approach transcends the traditional boundary of cuneiform studies and enables the field of Assyriology to contribute to a more general socio-historical discourse.

English Explorers in the East (1738-1745) : The Travels of Thomas Shaw, Charles Perry and Richard Pococke /

: In English Explorers in the East (1738-1745). The Travels of Thomas Shaw, Charles Perry and Richard Pococke , Rachel Finnegan offers an account of the influential travel writings of three rival explorers, whose eastern travel books were printed within a decade of each other. Making use of historical records, Finnegan examines the personal and professional motives of the three authors for producing their eastern travels; their methods of researching, drafting, and publicising their works while still abroad; their relationships with each other, both while travelling and on their return to England; and the legacy of their combined works. She also provides a survey of the main features (both textual and visual) of the travel books themselves.
