Catalogue of the Footwear in the Coptic Museum (Cairo) /

: This catalogue presents the ancient Egyptian footwear in the collection of the Coptic Museum in Cairo. The catalogue contains detailed descriptions and measurements, photographs and drawings. Each description of a footwear category is followed by short discussions, addressing topics such as typology and dating. In addition a fairly large corpus of comparative material is presented as well, none of which has been published before. The present work will form an important resource for future study. This catalogue is one of the results of the Nuffic Tailor Made Training for the curators of the Coptic Museum in Cairo, jointly organized by the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo and the American University in Cairo in close collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Coptic Museum Authorities and the Ministry of State for Antiquities Affairs. -- publisher's description. : 336 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 30 cm : Includes bibliographical references (pages 96-99). : 9088902534

A selection of Ptolemaic anthropoid sarcophagi in Cairo /

: "The individually designed anthropoid sarcophagi of the Ptolemaic period (ca. 330-30 BCE) offer a particularly rich and varied repertoire of hieroglyphic inscriptions and religious scenes. Being at the end of a long tradition of funerary literature, many of the epigraphs on these objects are variations or reinterpretations of older texts that have been circulated and transmitted over millennia. Others are entirely new creations that provide insight into funerary beliefs of late ancient Egypt. The present volume is the second and last publication of a joint project between scholars from Cairo University and the University of Tübingen on Late and Ptolemaic period sarcophagi housed in the museums of Cairo. It includes the detailed publication of eighteen sarcophagi, which until now have only been known through brief descriptions. The facsimile drawings, detailed pictures, translations and commentaries presented here will allow scholars to approach this corpus with a broad range of research questions."--

: By means of technical examination of the gold objects now part of the renowned and outstanding Egyptian collection of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, this book gives a unique and innovatory insight in the work of the ancient Egyptian goldsmith. In 1922 the world came face to face with a young pharaoh : in that year the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered and his breathtaking gold mask became known to everybody. Ancient Egyptian gold is known to all of us. But what was the significance of gold in Ancient Egyptian society? Where was it found and how was it won? And where did the Ancient Egyptian goldsmith work and what techniques did he master? The first part of this book answers the questions mentioned above. The second part is a catalogue of gold objects which are part of the renowned and outstanding collection of the Egyptian Department of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. By means of a technical examination of these objects, this book gives a unique and innovatory insight in the work of the ancient Egyptian goldsmith, who was able to accomplish true work of art though working in hot and basic circumstances. -- /cSource other than Library of Congress.
