The antiquities trade in Egypt 1880-1930 : the H.O. Lange papers /

: "The vast collections of Egyptian objects on display in Western museums attract millions of visitors every year, and they reinforce a cultural fascination for this ancient civilisation that has been a feature of European intellectual history since Roman times. This book tells the story of how these objects came to be here. ... The book presents the first in-depth analysis of this market during its 'golden age' in Egypt in the late 19th and early 20th Century. It is primarily based on the archival material of the Danish Egyptologist H. O. Lange (1863-1943) who, during two prolonged stays in Egypt (1899/1900 and 1929/1930), bought objects on behalf of Danish museums. The travel diaries, and the accompanying photographs, are complemented by a wide range of other sources, including contemporary travel guides and various travel memoirs, which together paint an extraordinarily detailed picture of the extensive antiquities trade."

A selection of Ptolemaic anthropoid sarcophagi in Cairo /

: "The individually designed anthropoid sarcophagi of the Ptolemaic period (ca. 330-30 BCE) offer a particularly rich and varied repertoire of hieroglyphic inscriptions and religious scenes. Being at the end of a long tradition of funerary literature, many of the epigraphs on these objects are variations or reinterpretations of older texts that have been circulated and transmitted over millennia. Others are entirely new creations that provide insight into funerary beliefs of late ancient Egypt. The present volume is the second and last publication of a joint project between scholars from Cairo University and the University of Tübingen on Late and Ptolemaic period sarcophagi housed in the museums of Cairo. It includes the detailed publication of eighteen sarcophagi, which until now have only been known through brief descriptions. The facsimile drawings, detailed pictures, translations and commentaries presented here will allow scholars to approach this corpus with a broad range of research questions."--

: By means of technical examination of the gold objects now part of the renowned and outstanding Egyptian collection of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, this book gives a unique and innovatory insight in the work of the ancient Egyptian goldsmith. In 1922 the world came face to face with a young pharaoh : in that year the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered and his breathtaking gold mask became known to everybody. Ancient Egyptian gold is known to all of us. But what was the significance of gold in Ancient Egyptian society? Where was it found and how was it won? And where did the Ancient Egyptian goldsmith work and what techniques did he master? The first part of this book answers the questions mentioned above. The second part is a catalogue of gold objects which are part of the renowned and outstanding collection of the Egyptian Department of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. Iron Age Terracotta Figurines from the Southern Levant in Context /

: This interdisciplinary volume is a 'one-stop location' for the most up-to-date scholarship on Southern Levantine figurines in the Iron Age. The essays address terracotta figurines attested in the Southern Levant from the Iron Age through the Persian Period (1200-333 BCE). The volume deals with the iconography, typology, and find context of female, male, animal, and furniture figurines and discusses their production, appearance, and provenance, including their identification and religious functions. While giving priority to figurines originating from Phoenicia, Philistia, Jordan, and Israel/Palestine, the volume explores the influences of Egyptian, Anatolian, Mesopotamian, and Mediterranean (particularly Cypriot) iconography on Levantine pictorial material.
