This volume brings together the leading experts in the history of European Oriental Studies. Their essays present a comprehensive history of the teaching and learning of Arabic in early modern Europe, covering a wide geographical area from southern to northern Europe and discussing the many ways and purposes for which the Arabic language was taught and studied by scholars, theologians, merchants, diplomats and prisoners. The contributions shed light on different methods and contents of language teaching in a variety of academic, scholarly and missionary contexts in the Protestant and the Roman Catholic world. But they also look beyond the institutional history of Arabic studies and consider the importance of alternative ways in which the study of Arabic was persued. Nonnus of Panopolis in Upper-Egypt is the author of the 48 books of the last large scale mythological epic in antiquity, the Dionysiaca . The same author also wrote an epic poem on the life and times of Jesus Christ according to St John's Gospel . Nonnus has an outstanding position in ancient literature being at the same time a pagan and a Christian author, living in a time when Christianity was common in the Roman empire, while pagan culture and traditional world views were still maintained. The volume is designed to cover literary, cultural and religious aspects of Nonnus' poetry as well as to highlight the social and educational background of both the Dionysiaca and the Paraphrasis of the Gospel of St. John .

The present volume brings together thirteen articles as so many chapters of a book, devoted to the history, methods, and practices of the commentaries that have been written on Aristotle's Rhetoric . Examining both the linguistic and factual background, these contributions attempt to insert each of the commentaries into its particular historical, political, social, philosophical, and pedagogical context. The historical periods and geographical areas that arise - from Greco-Roman antiquity to Heidegger's philosophy, from the Syriac and Arabic traditions to the Western world - make it possible, in sum, not only to indicate how the Rhetoric has been read and interpreted, but also to offer general perspectives on the practice of explicating ancient texts. Le présent volume rassemble treize articles envisagés comme autant de chapitres d'un livre et dédiés à l'histoire, à la méthode et à la pratique des commentaires à la Rhétorique d'Aristote. Mêlant l'approche matérielle et linguistique, ces contributions se proposent de réinscrire chacun des commentaires dans son contexte historique, politique, social, culturel, philosophique, et pédagogique particulier. Law played a key role in the workings of Roman culture, and legal discourse was important even in non-legal Latin literature. A proper understanding of that literature requires an investigation of the ways legal language is used. Nevertheless, legal elements have so far been widely neglected by scholars of Latin literature, in particular Augustan poetry. After an examination of legal language as a technical discourse and its role in Latin prose, the present book is devoted to a detailed analysis of legal language and imagery in the work of the Augustan poets. It will, therefore, allow for a better appreciation of these poems as well as of their significance for Augustan culture in the broad sense. In der römischen Kultur ist das Recht von zentraler Bedeutung, und Rechtsdiskurse spielen auch in der außerjuristischen Literatur eine prominente Rolle. Für das Verständnis der lateinischen Literatur ist die Betrachtung ihres Umgangs mit der Rechtssprache daher unerlässlich. Dennoch haben die rechtlichen Elemente in diesen Texten bislang kaum Beachtung gefunden. Dies gilt insbesondere für die augusteische Dichtung. Das vorliegende Buch geht zunächst der Frage nach, inwieweit die Rechtssprache von den Römern selbst als Fachsprache wahrgenommen wurde, und betrachtet ihre Verwendung im gemeinsprachlichen Kontext römischer Prosaschriften. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Analyse von Sprache und Bildwelt des Rechts in den Werken der augusteischen Dichter. Die Arbeit trägt damit zu einem besseren Verständnis dieser Gedichte und ihrer Bedeutung im Rahmen der augusteischen Kultur bei.

The Dynamics of Intertextuality in Plutarch explores the numerous aspects and functions of intertextual links both within the Plutarchan corpus itself (intratextuality) and in relation with other authors, works, genres or discourses of Ancient Greek literature (interdiscursivity, intergenericity) as well as non-textual sources (intermateriality). Thirty-six chapters by leading specialists set Plutarch within the framework of modern theories on intertextuality and its various practical applications in Plutarch's Moralia and Parallel Lives . Specific intertextual devices such as quotations, references, allusions, pastiches and other types of intertextual play are highlighted and examined in view of their significance for Plutarch's literary strategies, argumentative goals, educational program, and self-presentation.

This volume contains editions of sixty-five Greek, Demotic, Coptic and Arabic texts from Egypt, contributed as a token of friendship and respect by forty-six of Klaas Worp's colleagues and co-authors upon his retirement from the Papyrological Institute of the University of Leiden in August 2008. The contents are as diverse as Klaas Worp's own wide range of interests, and provide a vivid impression of life and culture in Graeco-Roman Egypt. The texts are written on papyrus, potsherds, parchment, paper and wood. They include both literary and documentary papyri and ostraca, and date from the third century BC to the eleventh century AD. They are published fully, most for the first time, with transcriptions and translations, and are accompanied by photographs.
