VOC : A Bibliography of Publications Relating to the Dutch East India Company, 1602-1800 /

: At the height of its power and influence in the seventeenth and eighteenth century the VOC - acronym for the United Netherland East India Company - was the greatest commercial concern in the world. The scope of its activities extended from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan. In some aspects, the Baltic trade and the North Sea fisheries were of more fundamental relevance for the economy of the Lowlands. But it was the more spectacular East Indian trade which aroused the admiration and the envy of foreigners, sometimes to the point of war. In this bibliography several topics are covered. Not only technical matters such as the legal status of the VOC, its management, directors and shareholders, but also subjects as voyages, battles, ship building, navigation, geography, natural history, ethnography, mission work, ministration, and many others. With 1674 entries, fully described and fully indexed.

Printing Arab modernity : book culture and the American Press in nineteenth-century Beirut /

: During the nineteenth century, the American Mission Press in Beirut printed religious and secular publications written by foreign missionaries and Syrian scholars such as Nāṣīf al-Yāzijī and Buṭrus al-Bustānī, of later nahḍa fame. In a region where presses were still not prevalent, letterpress-printed and lithographed works circulated within a larger network that was dominated by manuscript production. In this book, Hala Auji analyzes the American Press publications as important visual and material objects that provide unique insights into an era of changing societal concerns and shifting intellectual attitudes of Syria's Muslim and Christian populations. Contending that printed books are worthy of close visual scrutiny, this study highlights an important place for print culture during a time of an emerging Arab modernity.

Catalogue of Turkish manuscripts in the library of Leiden University and other collections in the Netherlandss.

: From as early as the 1600s, Dutch scholars and scholarship have displayed a keen interest in the studies of the Islamic world. Over the centuries, they have collected a wealth of source texts in various languages, Turkish texts being prominent among them. The present catalogue is the fourth and final volume in a series that covers the Turkish manuscripts preserved in public libraries and museums in the Netherlands. The volume gives a detailed description of Turkish manuscripts in minor Dutch collections, found in libraries and museums in Amsterdam, Groningen, The Hague, Leiden, Rotterdam and Utrecht, which hitherto have received little or no attention.

The Orion Center bibliography of the Dead Sea scrolls (1995-2000) /

: The Orion Center Bibliography of the Dead Sea Scrolls (1995-2000) is the fourth official Scrolls bibliography, following bibliographies covering the periods 1948-1957 (W. S. LaSor), 1958-1969 (B. Jongeling), and 1970-1995 (F. García Martínez and D. W. Parry). The current interest in the Scrolls, with at least two journals dedicated to these texts, has led to a proliferation of secondary literature, theses, and electronic publications. The Orion Center Bibliography contains over 3000 entries, including approximately 600 reviews, gathered from the École Biblique et Archéologique Française in Jerusalem, from on-line databases, and from the authors themselves. This work is based on the bibliography compiled by the Orion Center for the Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jerusalem, and includes reviews, journal articles, and electronic publications, a text index and a subject index.

Fihrist-i nuskhahā-yi khaṭṭi-yi Kitābkhāna-yi ʿumūmi-yi Jamʿiyyat-i nashr-i farhang-i Rasht /

: The library of the "Society for the Advancement of Culture of Gilan" in Rasht was one of the first public libraries in Iran. A private initiative, it took the society seven years from its foundation until the completion of its library in 1934. Besides contributions and gifts, the library now also receives financial support from the municipality of Rasht. The library has a manuscript department which at the time of publication of the present catalogue contained 594 items, 77 of which are collective volumes. In view of the fact that this library has no budget to speak of, it is surprising what interesting items it contains, probably all acquired through local donations. Thus one finds volume two of the Qajar translation of A. Grisolle, Traité élémentaire et pratique de pathologie interne (Paris, 1844, many reprints) (no. 45), and also a collective volume of 22 philosophical texts by Aristotle, Farabi, Avicenna, Tusi, and others (no. 416)

: Islamic studies are for a large part based on texts that were originally transmitted in manuscript. Even if many of these works are now available in print, improved editions are often needed, while most of the surviving texts have never been published at all. The preservation, description, and proper cataloging of Islamic manuscripts all have a direct influence on the possibility for Islamic studies to move forward and develop. For many years, Francis Richard (b. 1948) was responsible for the Persian manuscripts at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Author of numerous publications on Persian manuscripts and their tradition, his Splendeurs persanes, manuscrits du XIIe au XVIIe siècles (BnF, 1997) was also published in Persian in 2005. In recognition of the great services that he has rendered to Persian studies, the present work is the first of a two-volume liber amicorum by a number of distinguished Iranian scholars. Includes an inventory of the publications of Francis Richard.

Nag Hammadi bibliography, 1995-2006 /

The second volume covered 1970-1994. This third volume provides a complete integration of Supplements II/1-II/8 to the Bibliography as published in Novum Testamentum 1998-2008, with additions and corrections. This latest update contains 3,063 entries, with the set of three volumes containing 11,580 entries. Among Arabic manuscripts : memories of libraries and men /

: I.Y. Kratchkovsky (Ignatii Iul'ianovich Krachkovskii) was an iconic scholar, and Among Arabic Manuscripts, Memories of Libraries and Men gives us a good indication of what made him so outstanding. Hugely influential in its time, especially in Eastern Europe, it inspired several now-noted Arabists to start their studies in this field. It is beautifully written and, with the rising relevance of Arab-Russian relations has new historical importance. A memoir of a life in Orientalism, this autobiographic text is the result of strong will and endurance, and of total dedication to Arabic literature and language. It tells of Kratchkovsky's enormous achievements in the field, in a very personal manner and in an easily accessible form. The present publication is the English translation of the first 1953 Brill edition, accomplished by Tatiana Minorsky (d. 1987), with a new introduction by Michael Kemper.

The Poetics of Aristotle and the Tractatus Coislinianus : a bibliography from about 900 till 1996 /

: The bibliography of Aristotle's Poetics by Cooper and Gudeman, most welcome in 1928, has now become antiquated, even for the period it covers. The present one registers all editions, translations, commentaries and studies bearing on the Poetics or the major concepts that have been associated with it, correctly or incorrectly, from 1481 up till 1996. Moreover, a survey is given of the medieval translations and commentaries written in the Orient and in Europe. Special attention has been given to the reviews. The oldest one registered dates from 1697. The second book of the Poetics being lost, publications related to the Tractatus Coislinianus , which partly rests on Poetics II , have been included. There are seven indices. Especially those on passages and subjects should prove to be useful instruments. In the author's text Greek nouns and adjectives have been transliterated.
