The trade in papers marked with non-Latin characters :documents and history.

: The nine contributions in The Trade in Papers Marked with non-Latin Characters initiated by Anne Regourd (edition) approach global history through the paper trade. They cover, in addition to a paper used in 14th C Persia, papers used in Africa (Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tunisia) and Asia (the Ottoman Levant, Mecca, Persia, Russia, and Yemen) during the 19th-20th C. Primarily based on paper examination and quantitative data, the book invites us to treat papers as a source, and provides tools to determine the production of manuscripts in space and time for the area of interest. This methodology offers new insights on the competition between suppliers to the various markets particularly in respect of the emergence of import-export trading companies. Contributors are: Michaelle Biddle, Evyn Kropf, Anne Regourd, Francis Richard, Alice Shafi-Leblanc, Jan Just Witkam, Olga Yastrebova. Foreword by Anna-Grethe Rischel.

Editing and Commenting on Statius' Silvae /

: The Silvae by Statius dethroned Virgil from the Studio in Naples, fostered the creation of a new genre, offered a model for court poetry, and seduced the most prestigious Humanists in the most vibrant centres of Renaissance Italy and the Netherlands. The collection preserves magnificent buildings otherwise lost; speaks of stones otherwise unknown; and memorializes people, rituals, and social relationships that would have passed into oblivion in silence. This volume offers a fresh look into approaches to the Silvae by editors and commentators, both at the time of the rediscovery of the poems and today.

A Place in the World : New Local Historiographies in Africa and South Asia /

: Local histories, written and published by non-academic historians, constitute a rapidly expanding genre in contemporary non-Western societies. However, academic historians and anthropologists usually take little notice of them. This volume takes a comparative look at local historical writing. Thirteen case studies, set in seven different countries of sub-Saharan Africa, India and Nepal, examine the authors, their books and their audiences. From different perspectives, they analyse the genre's intellectual roots, its relationship to oral historical narratives, and its relevance and impact in local and wider arenas. Local histories, it turns out, pursue a variety of agendas. They (re)construct local and communal identities affected by rapid social change. Often, they (re)write history as part of cultural and political struggles. Openly or implicitly, all of them place local communities on the map of the world at large.

The Book of Tobit: Text, Tradition, Theology : Papers of the First International Conference on the Deuterocanonical Books, Pápa, Hungary, 20-21 May, 2004 /

: This volume contains the proceedings of the first of an international series of conferences on the deuterocanonical literature organised by the Shime'on Centre in Pápa, Hungary. Renowned international scholars of the field treat questions of text in the Book of Tobit, the underlying traditions and theological questions. The importance of the deuterocanonical corpus is widely recognised in contemporary scholarship. This is marked by the growing number of related publications. Yet it remains important to create an opportunity to work through the entire deuterocanonical material as such. These conferences aim to provide a yearly forum for discussion of this literature. The next conferences planned are on Maccabees (2005), Sirach (2006), Wisdom (2007), Additions (2008) and Judith (2009), and as a result, the organisers plan to publish five more volumes. Together with the present volume these will cover the entire deuterocanonical corpus.

Gregory of Nyssa : the minor treatises on trinitarian theology and Apollinarism : proceedings of the 11th International Colloquium on Gregory of Nyssa (Tübingen, 17-20 September 20...

: These proceedings present the results of the 11th International Colloquium on Gregory of Nyssa held in Tübingen in 2008. The Trinitarian thought of Gregory deserves special attention because of its importance for the ending of the Trinitarian controversy in the late fourth century, paving the way for the widely accepted Trinitarian theology in the fifth century. This volume (which does not include Contra Eunomium ) offers a contribution to the research on Gregory's Trinitarian theology as it is present notably in his so-called minor treatises. It provides a German translation of Ad Eustathium , Ad Graecos , Ad Ablabium , Ad Simplicium , Adversus Macedonianos , and De deitate filii . Detailed analysis of each treatise is accompanied by supporting studies on related theological and philosophical themes, followed by contributions which take into consideration the link between Gregory's Trinitarian thought and the christological question ( In illud tunc et inches per seconde filius , the anti-Apollinarist works).

This volume offers an up to date analysis of his philosophical perspective taking into account his views on scientific realism and democratic society. Clement's biblical exegesis : proceedings of the Second Colloquium on Clement Of Alexandria (Olomouc, May 29-31, 2014) /

: In Clement's Biblical Exegesis scholars from six countries explore various facets of Clement of Alexandria's hermeneutical theory and his exegetical practice. Although research on Clement has tended to emphasize his use of philosophical sources, Clement was important not only as a Christian philosopher, but also as a pioneer Christian exegete. His works constitute a crucial link in the tradition of Alexandrian exegesis, but his biblical exegesis has received much less attention than that of Philo or Origen. Topics discussed include how Clement's methods of allegorical interpretation compare with those of Philo, Origen, and pagan exegetes of Homer, and his readings of particular texts such as Proverbs, the Sermon on the Mount, John 1, 1 John, and the Pauline letters.

This volume presents results of current investigations in this field presented at a third, four-day symposium on the Hebrew of the Scrolls and Ben Sira held in October 1999 at the Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva with as many as 27 papers presented, some of which deal with questions of general and fundamental importance such as the nature of Qumran Hebrew, the linguistic symbiosis in Qumran, the position of Qumran Hebrew in the history of Hebrew, the future directions of philological and linguistic investigation of Qumran Hebrew and the Scrolls. Participants, many of whom are reputed specialists in the field, came from not only Israel, but also the U.S.A. , U.K., Sweden, the Netherlands, and France.

The Dead Sea scrolls : forty years of research /

: A fortieth anniversary is an occasion to be marked under any circumstances, especially when it concerns a discovery as significant as that of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The proper way to mark this occasion was to organize a symposium that would be as comprehensive as possible, both in content and in variety of approaches, and which would be held in the land of the Scrolls. The papers here reflect not only the variety and richness of subjects treated by contemporary research on Qumran, but also its international character. Since the study of texts remains the first task of the Qumran scholar many of the collection's papers belong to its first section - Texts and Text Studies . The other six sections are: The History of the Qumran Community, Halakha at Qumran, Qumran and the Hebrew Bible, Qumran and the New Testament and The Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls .
