A rhetorical grammar : C. Iulius Romanus, Introduction to the Liber de adverbio, as incorporated in Charisius' Ars Grammatica II. 13 /

About 280 AD C. Iulius Romanus wrote a large work on Latin grammar. Parts of this work were later incorporated in the Ars grammatica of Flavius Sosipater Charisius. Romanus' Introduction to his list of adverbs is unique because of his approach of the subject. With the help of many rhetorical means he weaves together an intricate argument, which is completely different from the usual treatments of the adverb. This unique character was never noticed previously. The first chapters of this book deal with Charisius and Romanus in general and the Introduction in particular. A new edition with translation and commentary follows, completed by a discussion of the annotations of Cauchius made about 1540 from a manuscript now lost.

Harmonics /

Ptolemy's comprehensive treatises on astronomy and geography were influential for nearly two millennia. Equally influential was his treatise on harmonics, the ancient science which combined and brought to completion the study of philosophy and science. This volume offers a comprehensive English translation and commentary of Ptolemy's Harmonics . The treatise begins with Ptolemy's study of pitches and intervals, for which he extracts both an idealized musical scale and a new acoustical tool. After discussing modulation, he expands his horizons by applying musical intervals to the human soul and celestial bodies, ultimately describing a cosmic harmony. The English translation faithfully reproduces Ptolemy's style and includes all the charts surviving in the manuscript tradition. The commentary offers a full exegesis of the text, loci paralleli, and citations of modern scholarly sources.

Sixteenth century Elizabethan treatises on rhetoric in the vernacular are relatively rare. Guillaume Coatalen offers annotated editions of Richard Reynolds's The Foundacion of Rhetorike (1563), which has not been edited since the 1945 facsimile edition, and of William Medley's unknown Brief Discourse on Rhetoricke which survives in a single manuscript dated 1575. While Reynolds's work is an English adaptation of Aphthonius's Progymnasmata and a preparation for Thomas Wilson's influential Arte of Rhetoricke (1560), Medley's is broader in scope and contains the only full treatment of periodic prose in English in the period. Both works are essential to understand how Elizabethan rhetoric in the vernacular evolved, in particular in aristocratic circles, and its links with Continental developments, notably German.

al-Radd al-jamīl attributed to al-Ghazālī (d. 1111) is the most extensive and detailed refutation of the divinity of Jesus by a Muslim author in the classical period of Islam. Since the discovery of the manuscript in the 1930's scholars have debated whether the great Muslim theologian al-Ghazālī was really the author. This is a new critical edition of the Arabic text and the first complete English translation. The introduction situates this work in the history of Muslim anti-Christian polemical writing. Mark Beaumont and Maha El Kaisy-Friemuth argue that this refutation comes from an admirer of al-Ghazālī who sought to advance some of his key ideas for an Egyptian audience.

This book is a commentary on the Pythagorean Golden Verses , a neglected, but once very popular poem of the Hellenistic period. The goal of the poem is to introduce its readers to the basic moral, religious and philosophical doctrines of the Pythagorean sect and to guide them to spiritual maturity. The first part of the book treats still unresolved introductory matters such as the date, authorship, genre, composition, and the historical locus of the poem. This is followed by a text with translation on facing pages, and a detailed commentary containing a wealth of comparative material from the Greco-Roman period, including early Christianity and Judaism. Hephaestion's Encheiridion is the most influential text in the history of metrical scholarship. It has been superseded for some genres of Greek verse but remains basic to the description of others. Until now the period following the Council of Nicea has remained a dark age of early Christian history. This is partly due to the fact that Eusebius' last and important works, Contra Marcellum and De Ecclesiastica Theologia , have not sufficiently been studied. Comparatively little interest has also been given to the Pseudo-Athanasian text Contra Arianos IV . Careful study and comparison of these works against the background of the post-Nicene debate between Asterius, Marcellus, Eusebius and Photinus, has revealed that (as A. Stegmann already proposed in 1917) Contra Arianos IV was written in about 340 and formed a Nicene critique of Marcellus, his pupil and opponents. Therefore, Stegmann's suggestion of the authorship of Apolinarius of Laodicea needs further investigation. This study on Contra Arianos IV sheds new light on the years between Nicea and the synods of Rome and Antioch (340/341).

This book presents a new edition, with translation, introduction and commentary, of two short medical texts, both transmitted in the Hippocratic Corpus but surely neither by the historical Hippocrates. The two works differ considerably in nature and origins: On Sight (Part 1) is a sketchy surgical manual on eye afflictions, perhaps originating in the African continent, and On Anatomy (Part 2) is an allusive account of basic human anatomy, perhaps originating in north Greece. Each text is interpreted in its own right and in the wider context of Hippocratic and other medical writing. Both content and language are closely analysed. The conclusions reached impact on important questions relating to the origin, constitution and dissemination of the Hippocratic Corpus.
