A rhetorical grammar : C. Iulius Romanus, Introduction to the Liber de adverbio, as incorporated in Charisius' Ars Grammatica II. 13 /

About 280 AD C. Iulius Romanus wrote a large work on Latin grammar. Parts of this work were later incorporated in the Ars grammatica of Flavius Sosipater Charisius. Romanus' Introduction to his list of adverbs is unique because of his approach of the subject. With the help of many rhetorical means he weaves together an intricate argument, which is completely different from the usual treatments of the adverb. This unique character was never noticed previously. The first chapters of this book deal with Charisius and Romanus in general and the Introduction in particular. A new edition with translation and commentary follows, completed by a discussion of the annotations of Cauchius made about 1540 from a manuscript now lost.

The Pythagorean golden verses : with introduction and commentary /

This book is a commentary on the Pythagorean Golden Verses , a neglected, but once very popular poem of the Hellenistic period. The goal of the poem is to introduce its readers to the basic moral, religious and philosophical doctrines of the Pythagorean sect and to guide them to spiritual maturity. The first part of the book treats still unresolved introductory matters such as the date, authorship, genre, composition, and the historical locus of the poem. This is followed by a text with translation on facing pages, and a detailed commentary containing a wealth of comparative material from the Greco-Roman period, including early Christianity and Judaism. Particularly valuable are the extensive discussions of the moral topoi and religious themes encountered in the poem.

Two Hippocratic treatises on sight and on anatomy /

This book presents a new edition, with translation, introduction and commentary, of two short medical texts, both transmitted in the Hippocratic Corpus but surely neither by the historical Hippocrates. The two works differ considerably in nature and origins: On Sight (Part 1) is a sketchy surgical manual on eye afflictions, perhaps originating in the African continent, and On Anatomy (Part 2) is an allusive account of basic human anatomy, perhaps originating in north Greece. Each text is interpreted in its own right and in the wider context of Hippocratic and other medical writing. Both content and language are closely analysed. The conclusions reached impact on important questions relating to the origin, constitution and dissemination of the Hippocratic Corpus.

The treatise "De Graecarum affectionum curatione" (Therapeia of the Greek Maladies) is considered a highlight of Christian apologetic literature. Bishop Theodoret of Cyrrhus(ca AD 393 - ca AD 460) disputes the prejudice that the Christian faith was incompatible with classical education and civilization. He shows the integrating ability of globally aligned Christianity to establish peaceful local communities. The Greek tradition itself demonstrates the truth of Christianity. The text is placed in the context of Theodoret's life and works. Its literary character, place in Christian apologetics, sources, cultural and historical context, and the possibility that Syrian Antioch was its place of origin are all examined. The present edition contains the critical text by Raeder and a German translation with notes. Die Schrift "De Graecarum affectionum curatione" (Heilung der griechischen Krankheiten) ist ein Höhe¬punkt der Apologetik der Alten Kirche. Theodoret (circa 393 - circa 460), Bischof von Kyrrhos, tritt dem Vorurteil entgegen, Glaube und Lebensführung der Christen vertrügen sich nicht mit klassischer Bildung und Gesittung. Er wirbt für die integrative Fähigkeit des global ausgerichteten Christentums, friedliche lokale Ge¬meinschaften eta¬blieren zu können. Apollonius of Perga's Conica : text, context, subtext /

This volume takes a new look at one of the greatest works of Hellenistic mathematics, Apollonius of Perga's Conica . It provides a long overdue alternative to H.G. Zeuthen's Die Lehre von den Kegelschnitten im Altertum . The central part of the volume contains a historically sensitive analysis and interpretation of the entire Conica , both from the standpoint of its individual books and of the text as a whole. Particular attention is given to Books V-VII, which have had scant treatment until now. Two chapters in the volume concern histioriographic issues connected with the Conica in paricular and Greek mathematics in general. Although the volume is intended primarily for historians of ancient mathematics, its approach is fresh and engaging enough to be of interest also to historians, philosophers, linguists, and open-minded mathematicians.
