Die Ausrüstung der römischen Armee auf der Siegessäule des Marcus Aurelius in Rom : ein Vergleich zwischen der skulpturalen Darstellung und den archäologischen Bodenfunden /
:
The reliefs of the column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome are used extensively for the illustration of Roman soldiers. However, there is no direct comparison between this work of official Roman art and the archaeological finds. This book aims to address this lacuna.

Brill's companion to the classics, fascist Italy and Nazi Germany /
:
The first ever guide to the manifold uses and reinterpretations of the classical tradition in Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany, Brill's Companion to the Classics, Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany explores how political propaganda manipulated and reinvented the legacy of ancient Greece and Rome in order to create consensus and historical legitimation for the Fascist and National Socialist dictatorships. The memory of the past is a powerful tool to justify policy and create consensus, and, under the Fascist and Nazi regimes, the legacy of classical antiquity was often evoked to promote thorough transformations of Italian and German culture, society, and even landscape. At the same time, the classical past was constantly recreated to fit the ideology of each regime.

Lo scavo a Parma sotto palazzo sanvitale /
:
Palazzo Sanvitale is located in Parma on the left bank of a stream, on the edge of the northeastern quadrant of the urban layout. The palace and garden fill two blocks, separated almost entirely by a minor decumanus. Ceramic and clay scraps from an underlying pit date the laying out of the decumanus towards the end of the 3rd century BC. In the south block, residential buildings recall the housing scenarios of the eastern Cispadana. To the east, a mixtilinear building dates to the 4th century AD. In the other block, superimposed on a primitive housing phase, the remains of a bathhouse dating to the second half of the 2nd century AD are outlined. During the Theoderican age, residential buildings, one of which seals the remains of a mill, filled both blocks. This title is accompanied by essays on the materials from the excavations.

'Poedicvlorvm oppida' : spazi urbani della Puglia Centrale in età Romana /
:
The indigenous persistence, texture, articulation, shape and functionality of the urban definition of the municipia in central Apulia demonstrate the nature of the complex history and settlement of this area in the long period between the age of Romanization and the 3rd century AD. The comprehensive collection and examination of the material evidence make it possible to reconstruct - for the first time, in an organic manner and in a global framework - the profile of the urban space of 'poediculorum oppida'.

Investigations into the dyeing industry in Pompeii : experimental archaeology and computer simulation techniques /
:
The scale of processing associated with the dyeing industry in Pompeii is a controversial subject. To determine the scale of manufacturing would allow an understanding of the operation of Pompeii's economy and its part in the Roman World. Previous studies have taken a theoretical approach, and no conclusive answer has been reached. Conversely, this book uses a new multi-disciplinary triangulated approach. A replica was constructed to gauge the operating parameters of a dyeing apparatus within the framework of the principles of experimental archaeology. The remains were re-examined in situ with the new operational and ergonomics understanding. The replica was amended to allow exploration of design features and ventilation. The throughput of the apparatus was placed within the context of the industry with modern manufacturing systems theory.

Römisches Zaumzeug aus Pompeji, Herculaneum und Stabiae : Metallizäume, Trensen und Kandaren /
:
Few regions possess so many and mainly complete Roman bridles as do the Vesuvian sites. Singular find conditions permit both comprehensive antiquarian-historian analyses of their production, functionality, and everyday use and new approaches to their typology and chronology. The 103 catalogued specimens belong to four types of bronze headstalls, namely metallic noseband, bitless metal bridle ('hackamore'), multipartite metallic bridle ('metallic halter'), and muzzle as well as two types of bits, namely snaffle bit with circular cheekpieces and curb bit. All of them occurred in more or less numerous variants of local or provincial origin. Special attention is paid to the reconstruction of application methods and combinations of types as well as the replica of a snaffle bit with circular cheekpieces.

Scambi e commerci in area Vesuviana : i dati delle anfore dai saggi stratigrafici i.e. (impianto elettrico) 1980-81 nel Foro di Pompei /
:
Transport amphorae are one of the best archaeological indicators for evaluating the economy and trade of societies in the ancient world. This monograph, produced by researchers from the University of Cadiz and the Ca' Foscari University of Venice, includes the study of nearly five hundred of these commercial containers, recovered during the pioneering stratigraphic excavations carried out in 1980-1981 at the Forum of Pompeii, called conventionally 'Impianto Elettrico'. The work represents the first Pompeian monograph dedicated exclusively to the analysis of the amphoric evidence brought to light by archaeological excavation activities in the city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius and analyses in diachronic perspective the main productions in circulation between the VI/V BC and the year 79 AD.

Ägyptisches Kulturgut im phönikischen und punischen Sardinien /
:
From the early part of the first century BC, Egyptian cultural artefacts spread to an increasing degree into Palestine and Syria and (via the Greeks and Phoenicians) into the Greek, Italian and Western Phoenician spheres. Following a presentation of the Near Eastern background and a survey of Sardinian findspots, this work lists the types of monument found on Sardinia (from the 8th c. to the Roman period). In the case of both amulets (gods in human and animal form) and scarabs made if steatite and fayence an attempt is made, using a carefully developed typology (both of material and form) and other statistical criteria, to derive a characterisation of groups of differing origin (Egyptian, Eastern Phoenician, Punic). These objects reflect the expansion and adaptation of polupar Egyptian magic. Even the Egyptian motifs on hard-stone Punic scarabs and precious-metal artefacts have a religious significance, which is very closely related to Egyptian concepts. In the same way the Egyptian elements on Punic steles and portions of architecture underline their sacral character. This study pursues methodological goals using evidence from the whole of Mediterranean area.
