In 376 Epiphanius, chief bishop of Cyprus, published, in three Books, an historical encyclopedia of heretical sects, with the arguments, chiefly scriptural, needed to counter them, and called it the Panarion (Medicine Chest). This volume, Books II and III of the Panarion , is chiefly concerned with the sects contemporary with him, the Arian, Manichaean and others. It thus describes the thought of the fourth century church, and includes a number of source documents, many of them found only here. This is the only full translation of Epiphanius in a modern language.

Anonymi Monophysitae theosophia : an attempt at reconstruction /

The Theosophy , written by an anonymous Monophysite theologian in the early years of the sixth century CE, is a work in four books with a final world chronicle. Heir to a long apologetic tradition, it aims at demonstrating that there is a basic harmony between Christian faith and pagan theology. For this reason its author quotes at length numerous pagan prophecies of the Christian doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation. This volume proposes the first comprehensive critical edition of all the extant fragments of this work, in an attempt to reconstruct the general framework and to understand the inner logic of its composition. Thanks to this edition, which is bound to become the starting point for any future investigation, the Theosophy has now been put in circulation and made available for further research.

Lucian's Alexander the False Prophet is the only literary testimony to a highly influential cult of the 'New Asclepios Glycon' which, as archaeological evidence continues to document, spread all over the eastern Mediterranean basin throughout the second and third centuries AD. Rather than studying the LXX of Hosea mainly as a text-critical resource for the Hebrew or as a help for interpreting the Hebrew, this commentary, as part of the Septuagint Commentary Series, primarily examines the Greek text of Hosea as an artifact in its own right to seek to determine how it would have been understood by early Greek readers who were unfamiliar with the Hebrew. This commentary is based on the uncorrected text of Vaticanus, and it contains a copy of that text with notes discussing readings that differ from modern editions of the LXX along with a literal translation of that text. This commentary also has an introduction to the Minor Prophets in the Septuagint. It is relevant for anyone studying the LXX or the book of Hosea.

The Manichaen religion, which was founded by Mani in the Third century AD, adapted various elements from mainstream Christianity. For this reason the relationship between the texts of the two religions remains a lively topic of research today. This volume contains the until-now unpublished dissertation and three further articles of Alexander Böhlig (*1912 † 1996), who was one of the leading scholars in Manichaean studies. In the introduction Peter Nagel offers a biography detailing Böhlig's academic pursuits. The main part of the book reproduces the revised dissertation \'Die Bibel bei den Manichäern\', originally completed in 1947. Written shortly after the discovery of the Medinet Madi Library, the pioneering study weighed the influence of the Bible on Manichaeism. At the end three related articles of Alexander Böhlig, which cannot be found in the collections of selected papers, are reprinted. Die von ihrem Stifter Mani im 3. Jh. gegründete manichäische Religion übernahm aus dem Christentum verschiedenste Elemente, deren Bestimmung und Bewertung bis heute einen Schwerpunkt in der Manichäismusforschung bilden. Der vorliegende Band enthält die bis dato unpublizierte Dissertation sowie drei weitere Artikel von Alexander Böhlig (*1912 † 1996), der einer der führenden Wissenschaftler in der Manichäismusforschung war. In der Einleitung des Buches beschreibt Peter Nagel mit großer Detailkenntnis den wissenschaftlichen Werdegang Böhligs. Der Hauptteil enthält die in den Anmerkungen ergänzte Dissertation "Die Bibel bei den Manichäern", die 1947 abgeschlossen wurde. Kurz nach dem Handschriftenfund von Medinet Madi verfaßt, wurde darin der Einfluß biblischer Schriften auf der Grundlage gänzlich neuen Materiales untersucht. Am Ende des Bandes wurden drei weitere Artikel zum Thema Manichäismus und Christentum aufgenommen, die nicht in den diversen Aufsatzsammlungen des Autoren zu finden sind.

Dem antiken Verständnis nach war Magie weit mehr als nur ein Sammelsurium esoterischer Praktiken und Rituale, die vor allem zum eigenen Nutzen und zum Schaden anderer eingesetzt wurden. Vielmehr sind darunter alle religiösen Handlungen jenseits der institutionalisierten Kultausübung zu fassen. Dies zeigen auch die zwölf Aufsätze, die aus der im Frühjahr 2011 anlässlich der Rückkehr eines lange vermissten Heidelberger Zauberbüchleins organisierten Ausstellung 'Ägyptische Magie im Wandel der Zeiten' hervorgingen. Nunmehr um eine ausserägyptische Perspektive erweitert, reicht der zeitliche Rahmen der Beiträge in diesem Band von den Anfängen der Schriftlichkeit im Zweistromland und dem Alten Ägypten bis tief in das koptischsprachige Mittelalter hinein. Überblicksartikel vermitteln einen Eindruck von Magie in Mesopotamien und im Vorderen Orient sowie im spätzeitlichen Ägypten. Daneben stehen thematische Beiträge zu solchen Bereichen, in denen man sich bevorzugt magischer Mittel bediente, so beim Schutz der Grabstätte, bei der Abwehr von Schlangen und Skorpionen, im medizinischen Bereich und mit besonderer Energie bei der Verfolgung sexueller Ziele. Theophrastus of Eresus : sources for his life, writings, thought, and influence /

These two volumes represent the first fruits of an international project to produce a new collection - text, translation and commentary - of the fragments and testimonia relating to Theophrastus (c. 370-288/5 B.C.), Aristotle's pupil and successor as head of the Lyceum. The need for a new collection was apparent: the standard collection, by Wimmer, is already 120 years old, whereas we now have far better texts of many of the ancient authors in which fragments and testimonia of Theophrastus occur. Whilst classicists have devoted the past hundred years to bringing into the light the work of the major post-Aristotelian schools, the contribution of Theophrastus has remained obscure. The second printing contains corrections to the first. This first stage of the project presents the texts, critical apparatus and English translation of the fragments and testimonia. It contains a long methodological introduction, an index of Theophrastean texts and concordances with other collections (Scheider, Wimmer and the several recent partial editions). The second stage of the project, which Brill will also publish will consist of 9 commentary volumes, planned at present as follows: 1. Life, Writings, various reports (M. Sollenberger, Mt.
