Philological and historical commentary on Ammianus Marcellinus.

This is the final volume in the series of commentaries on Ammianus' Res Gestae . The last book of Ammianus Marcellinus' Res Gestae is the most important source for a momentous event in European history: the invasion of the Goths across the Danube border into the Roman Empire and the ensuing battle of Adrianople (378 CE), in which a Roman army was annihilated and the emperor Valens lost his life. Many contemporaries were of the opinion that this defeat heralded the decline of the Empire. Ammianus is sharply critical of the way Valens and his generals handled the military situation, but holds on to his belief in the permanence of Roma Aeterna , reminding his readers of earlier crises from which the Empire had recovered and pointing to the incompetence of the barbarians in siege craft.

Themistius' (4th century CE) paraphrase of Aristotle's Metaphysics 12 is the earliest surviving complete account of this seminal work. Despite leaving no identifiable mark in Late Antiquity, Themistius' paraphrase played a dramatic role in shaping the metaphysical landscape of Medieval Arabic and Hebrew philosophy and theology. Lost in Greek, and only partially surviving in Arabic, its earliest full version is in the form of a 13th century Hebrew translation. In this volume, Yoav Meyrav offers a new critical edition of the Hebrew translation and the Arabic fragments of Themistius' paraphrase, accompanied by detailed philological and philosophical analyses. In doing so, he provides a solid foundation for the study of one of the most important texts in the history of Aristotelian metaphysics.

The panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis.

Epiphanius, monastic founder and bishop of Salamis on Cyprus for almost 40 years of the fourth century, threw heart and soul into the controversies of the time and produced the \'Panarion\' or \'Medicine Chest\', an historical encyclopedia of sects and heresies and their refutations. Book I, concerned chiefly with Gnostic and Jewish Christian groups, deals with material which is also found in Nag Hammadi and other Gnostic writings and in such patristic authors as Irenaeus, Hippolytus et al, and reproduces documents not available elsewhere. Its translation has been found useful by students of Nag Hammadi and Gnosticism, patrologists, historians of religion, church historians, students of Judaism, and the theologically minded public.

Galen (2nd century A.D.), after Hippocrates the most distinguished physician of antiquity, has left us numerous medical works to which no complete Greek-English dictionary or concordance was available until now. The Panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis.

In 376 Epiphanius, chief bishop of Cyprus, published, in three Books, an historical encyclopedia of heretical sects, with the arguments, chiefly scriptural, needed to counter them, and called it the Panarion (Medicine Chest). This volume, Books II and III of the Panarion , is chiefly concerned with the sects contemporary with him, the Arian, Manichaean and others. It thus describes the thought of the fourth century church, and includes a number of source documents, many of them found only here. This is the only full translation of Epiphanius in a modern language.

On Theriac to Piso, attributed to Galen : a critical edition with translation and commentary /

Robert Leigh offers a critical edition with translation into English, commentary and introduction of the pharmacological treatise On Theriac to Piso traditionally attributed to Galen. The focus of the work is on the question of authorship and Leigh seeks to show on textual, pharmacological, doctrinal and historical grounds that the attribution to Galen is at least highly problematic and probably mistaken. As well as marshalling the arguments in the introduction, Leigh seeks in the commentary not only to give a general exegesis of the text but also to identify points of agreement and points of difference between the treatise and other works which are undisputedly in the genuine Galenic corpus.

The Fragments of the Methodists is a new attempt to give a first corpus of its kind. Manuela Tecusan has collected, edited, and translated all the surviving testimonials concerning one of the most influential 'schools' or doctrines of medicine in late antiquity: Methodism. This volume contains the fragments accompanied by a textual apparatus and facing English translation. The introduction provides a guide to the collection. The second volume presents a commentary to all fragments and two glossaries of medical and pharmacological terms. Apart from its intrinsic novelty, this material affords fresh insights into broad topics of contemporary concern, such as the relation between philosophy and medicine, problems of biomedical ethics, the epistemological foundations of the sciences, the role of causal explanation - explored here in their fascinating historical set-up. The first part of this volume offers an analysis of the use and distribution of the perfect in the classical period of ancient Greek, based on the complete relevant material in Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides (tragic poetry), Aristophanes (comic poetry), Thucydides, Xenophon's Anabasis (historical prose), Lysias (rhetorical prose) and Xenophon's Opuscula (various prose types). This is a word-for-word commentary on the first part (vv. 1-382) of Hesiod's Works and Days . Special attention has been paid to peculiarities of grammar and idiom, but also to figures of style and the poet's train of thought. All interpretations - many of them which are new - are documented as fully, but at the same time as concisely, as possible. This documentation, which will prove useful for the interpretation of many other texts, has been made more easily accesible by detailed indexes. Discussion of other views plays a considerable part in the commentary and will help the reader avoid a great number of minor and major misunderstandings. The commentary has been confined to the first part of the poem because this seemed to be more in need of a thorough explanation than the rest. It is also the most interesting part in so far as it forms a kind of manual of social morality. The basis concepts of this doctrine are carefully defined in the commentary, and their historical implications are briefly indicated.

Two Hippocratic treatises on sight and on anatomy /

This book presents a new edition, with translation, introduction and commentary, of two short medical texts, both transmitted in the Hippocratic Corpus but surely neither by the historical Hippocrates. The two works differ considerably in nature and origins: On Sight (Part 1) is a sketchy surgical manual on eye afflictions, perhaps originating in the African continent, and On Anatomy (Part 2) is an allusive account of basic human anatomy, perhaps originating in north Greece. Each text is interpreted in its own right and in the wider context of Hippocratic and other medical writing. Both content and language are closely analysed. The conclusions reached impact on important questions relating to the origin, constitution and dissemination of the Hippocratic Corpus.
