This volume provides new information on a brilliant but not well known period of the history of surgery. It uses as its point of departure a remarkable but insufficiently known documentation: Greek literary papyri (from I B.C. to A.D. VII), which often are unique witnesses to lost medical works, bearing testimony to original theories, practices and vocabulary. The first part of the book provides an introduction to ancient surgery, to Greco-Roman Egypt and to the Greek medical papyri. The second part presents the critical edition with French translation and commentaries of seven surgical papyri and a chapter on other medical papyri with some information about surgery.

"The fort of Krokodilo on the road from Coptos to Myos Hormos was excavated in 1996-97 by the French mission in the Eastern desert. Its rubbish-dump was formed during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian, and produced over 800 ostraca, 189 of which are published in this volume. While the first volume of Ostraca de Krokodilô concerns military correspondence, this second volume contains private letters exchanged between the inhabitants of Krokodilo and the neighbouring forts, Phoinikon and Persou. The letters were written by three very different characters: Philokles, a green-grocer and pimp, plays a central role in supplying vegetables to the inhabitants of the desert forts and also organises the prostitution; Ischyras, a quarry-man, is an acquaintance of Philokles and his letters are full of declarations of friendship, but also contain some harsh remarks which demonstrate the brutality of certain human relationships; Apollos is probably a soldier, but also functions as a letter-writer for a group of people who are mostly concerned with their provisions of food. This rich corpus gives us a glimpse of the daily life in a society of some 200 people who lived in the desert garrisons at the beginning of the 2nd century AD, and who appear in the ostraca. We are able to witness the importance of solidarity in this hostile environment and the important role of civilians, not least the women, in the life around the forts."--Back cover.

In addition, the assembled texts contribute to the study of Roman political thought, shaped by earlier traditions primarily during the Principate and the beginning of the Later Roman Empire. La Phrygie Parorée et la Pisidie septentrionale deals with the history, the historical geography and the cultural sociology of Phrygia Paroreios and Northern Pisidia during the Hellenistic and Roman periods (IVth century BC - IVth century AD). This region of inner Anatolia, mostly inhabited by Pisidians and Phrygians, faced gradually the settlement of Greek, Macedonian, Jewish, Thracian, Lycian and Roman colonists who deeply modified the local cultures and geopolitics. With an approach based on epigraphic, archaeological, literary and numismatic sources, this work is the first historical synthesis devoted to a region showing strong cultural identities, which makes it essential to the understanding of the Graeco-Roman East. La Phrygie Parorée et la Pisidie septentrionale traite de l'Histoire, de la géographie historique et de la sociologie culturelle de la Phrygie Parorée et du Nord de la Pisidie aux époques hellénistique et romaine (IVe s. av. J.-C.-IVe s. ap. J.-C.). Cette région de l'Anatolie intérieure, surtout peuplée par les Pisidiens et les Phrygiens, eut successivement à faire face à l'installation de colons grecs, macédoniens, juifs, thraces, lyciens et romains qui modifièrent en profondeur les cultures et la géopolitique locales. The recurring problems of eye-disease in Egypt account for the importance that ophthalmology has always had in this country. Eye-diseases and their treatment in Greco-Roman Egypt are documented by a remarkable but insufficiently known body of material: Greek literary papyri, which are often the only witnesses to lost medical works and which provide evidence of original theories, practices and terminology. The first part of this book provides an introduction to ancient ophthalmology, to the medical literature of Greco-Roman Egypt and to Greek medical papyri. The second part presents a critical edition (with a French translation and commentary) of the papyri with theoretical expositions, and a chapter on ophthalmic recipes. FRENCH TEXT Eu égard aux affections oculaires qui y sévissent depuis toujours, l'ophtalmologie ne cessa d'occuper une place préponderante en Egypte.
