Georg Busolt : his career in his letters /

This book is a study of Georg Busolt (1850-1920), a noted German historian of classical Greece. The treatment is based on a collection of his own letters, mainly written to other scholars. Over 100 letters from Busolt to others are collected and edited here. Each letter, in the original German, is presented with commentary and the whole is woven into a chronological narrative and survey of Busolt's career. There are four chapters (The Busolt Family; Königsberg; Kiel, Göttingen), the last three corresponding to the universities where he studied and taught. Despite Busolt's eminence and the continued usefulness of his two great handbooks ( Griechische Geschichte; Griechische Staatskunde ), nothing has ever been written about him. Moreover, the narrative gives a picture of Prussian universities and academic issues during his period - a crucial one for the development of German education - and is thus a contribution to the history of scholarship.

Eduard Meyer (1855-1930) was among the most important historians of his age. After Mommsen he is the best known German ancient historian. From 1902 he taught ancient history in Berlin and from 1919/20 he was vice-chancellor. His most important work \'Geschichte des Altertums\' includes the ancient oriental cultures, contains a sociological- anthropological methodology and considers all humane studies, especially religious history. This collection treats aspects of Meyer's biography - including his journey to America, his relations with his contemporaries (M. Weber, O. Spengler, U.von Wilamowitz), his university politics, his role in the First World War, his positions on Christianity and Judaism, history of philosophy, and particular research results and their effect.

This collection of essays focuses on the ways in which Greek and Latin authors viewed and wrote about the history of medicine in the ancient world. Special attention is given to medical doxography, id est the description of the characteristic doctrines of the great medical authorities of the past. The volume examines the various attitudes to the history of medicine adopted by a wide range of ancient writers (e.g. Aristotle, Galen, Celsus, Herophilus, Soranus, Oribasius, Caelius Aurelianus). It discusses the historical sense of ancient medicine, the variety of versions of the medical past that were created and the wide range of purposes and strategies which medico-historical writing served. Philosophy of language and other matters in the work of Anton Marty : analysis and translations /

One of the most important students of Franz Brentano was Anton Marty, who made it his task to develop a philosophy of language on the basis of Brentano's analysis of mind. It is most unfortunate that Marty does not receive the attention he deserves, primarily due to his detailed and distracting polemics. In the analysis presented here his philosophy of language and other aspects of his thought, such as his ontology (which ultimately diverges from Brentano's), are examined first and foremost in their positive rather than critical character. The analysis is moreover supplemented by translations of four important works by Marty, including his entire work On the Origin of Language . These are in fact the first English translations of any substantial writings by him. The resulting picture that emerges from the analysis and translations is that Marty has much to say that proves to be of enduring interest for the philosophy of language on a range of topics, especially the meanings of statements, of emotive expressions, and of names as regards both their communicative and their ontological aspects. The volume will be of interest not only to philosophers and historians of philosophy, but also to historians of linguistics and psychology.

Few regions possess so many and mainly complete Roman bridles as do the Vesuvian sites. Singular find conditions permit both comprehensive antiquarian-historian analyses of their production, functionality, and everyday use and new approaches to their typology and chronology. The 103 catalogued specimens belong to four types of bronze headstalls, namely metallic noseband, bitless metal bridle ('hackamore'), multipartite metallic bridle ('metallic halter'), and muzzle as well as two types of bits, namely snaffle bit with circular cheekpieces and curb bit. All of them occurred in more or less numerous variants of local or provincial origin. Special attention is paid to the reconstruction of application methods and combinations of types as well as the replica of a snaffle bit with circular cheekpieces.

Destruction of temples and their transformation into churches are central symbols of late antique change in religious environment, socio-political system, and public perception. Contemporaries were aware of these events' far-reaching symbolic significance and of their immediate impact as demonstrations of political power and religious conviction. Joined in any "temple-destruction" are the meaning of the monument, actions taken, and subsequent literary discourse. Paradigms of perception, specific interests, and forms of expression of quite various protagonists clashed. Archaeologists, historians, and historians of religion illuminate "temple-destruction" from different perspectives, analysing local configurations within larger contexts, both regional and imperial, in order to find an appropriate larger perspective on this phenomenon within the late antique movement "from temple to church".

This volume examines the biblical hermeneutics of Maximus the Confessor (579/580-662). Although some aspects of the Confessor's hermeneutical approach had already been tackled, a comprehensive analysis was still missing. Accordingly, this book fills a gap in Patristic studies. The study consists of three chapters. The first one deals with the logoi theory of Maximus being the ontological nucleus around which his whole theological thinking is organized. The second chapter examines Maximus' understanding of mystical ascension. Equipped with the \'ontological\' and \'mystical\' foundation, the third chapter analyzes thoroughly the hermeneutics of Maximus as such, attempting to show its coherence and rootedness in the general christological perspective of the Confessor. This book will be of benefit not only for byzantinists and patrologists, but also for biblical scholars interested in the history of hermeneutics and exegesis as well as for historians of philosophy and medieval ideas.

The lack of a well organised index of synonyms of plant names for the period of the later Middle Ages has increasingly been felt by historians, philologists and sociologists to be one of the big lacunas in their field. In his Boec van medicinen in Dietsche (Brill, 1967) Willem F. Daems presented in a Synonymarium van Middelnederlandse Plantennamen a summary of the plant names which occurred in a single text conceived in c. 1300. In the Hellenistic period Jews regularly encountered Greek mythology in one form or another: in literature, in art, or through language. This book is the first comprehensive study of the different strategies pursued by Jewish-Hellenistic authors as they engaged with Greek myth. The principal focus of this study is on the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, but a large range of other authors from the Third century BCE to the 1st century CE are also discussed. Far from limiting themselves to outright rejection, these authors often show a striking familiarity with Greek myth, which they sometimes even incorporated into Jewish myth. Ancient Jewish discourse on Greek myth was not primarily driven by apologetics, but constituted an important aspect of Jewish Hellenism. Juden trafen in der hellenistischen Zeit regelmässig auf griechische Mythen: in der Literatur, in der Kunst oder im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch. Dieses Buch ist die erste weitgespannte Untersuchung der unterschiedlichen Strategien, die jüdisch-hellenistische Autoren in ihrem Umgang mit griechischen Mythen anwandten.
