Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh : Tārīkh-i Ismāʿīliyān /

Rashīd al-Dīn Hamadānī's (d. 718/1319) Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh has been described by many as the first world history ever. Composed in Persian for the Mongol Il-khans Ghāzān (r. 1295-1304) and Öljeitü (Uljāytu, r. 1304-16), its aim was to set out the history and condition of the Mongol people, conquerors of the world (part one), followed by a description of the other peoples and nations of the world and their histories (part two). Given its unprecedented scope, Rashīd, vizier to both rulers, mobilized a whole team of specialists, informants, and collaborators to assist him in his task. Making use of written and oral sources, the part on the Mongols is a key source on the emergence and organisation of the Mongol empire, while the second part constitutes the first attempt ever at writing a history of the world. The section published here describes the history of the Ismailis.

The Adventures of Shāh Esmāʿil recounts the dramatic formative years of the Safavid empire (1501-1722), as preserved in Iranian popular memory by coffeehouse storytellers and written down in manuscripts starting in the late seventeenth century. Beginning with the Safavids' saintly ancestors in Ardabil, the story goes on to relate the conquests of Shāh Esmāʿil (r. 1501-1524) and his devoted Qezelbāsh followers as they battle Torkmāns, Uzbeks, Ottomans, and even Georgians and Ethiopians in their quest to establish a Twelver Shiʿi realm. Barry Wood's translation brings out the verve and popular tone of the Persian text. A heady mixture of history and legend, The Adventures of Shāh Esmāʿil sheds important light on the historical self-awareness of late Safavid Iran.

Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī (Mawlānā) is the most famous and widely quoted mystical poet of the Persiate world. Ever since he passed away in 672/1273, people have studied, commented and recited his works, both in the Muslim world and, in modern times, also in the West. After Firīdūn Aḥmad Sipahsālār's (d. before 712/1312) Risāla-yi Sipahsālār dar manāqib-i khudāwandigār , the second most detailed source on Rūmī in Persian is Shams al-Dīn Aḥmad Aflākī ʿĀrifī's (d. 761/1360) Manāqib al-ʿārifīn . A follower of Rūmī's grandson Jalāl al-Dīn Firīdūn (d. 719/1320), Aflākī could include a lot of first-hand information in his work. Aflākī's work saw at least two revised editions: the Khulāṣat al-Manāqib by Aḥmad b. Maḥmūd (early 9th/15th century), and the work published here by ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Jalāl al-Dīn Hamadānī (d. 954/1547). Composed in Egypt where he had sought refuge from Safavid anti-Sunnī policies, he abridged the original text, removing mistakes and redundant, inappropriate, and un-Persian, 'alien' material.

The Nahj al-balāgha is a collection of sermons, letters, testimonials, and wise sayings attributed to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (d. 40/661), the Prophet's son-in-law, successor, and first imam of the Shīʿa. The collection was compiled by al-Sharīf al-Raḍī (d. 406/1088), a distinguished ʿAlid member of Baghdad's ruling elite. The Nahj al-balāgha is widely considered a work of extraordinary literary quality, besides being an invaluable source of information on the person, opinions, and virtues of ʿAlī. ʿAlī's letter to al-Malik al-Ashtar al-Nakhʿī, in which he describes the ethical and executive mindset with which he wants him to assume the administration of Egypt, is generally regarded as a text of exceptional appeal. It is therefore no wonder that it was translated into Persian many times. The present translation by the man of letters and chronicler of the court Muḥammad Ibrāhīm Badāyiʿ-nigār (d. 1299/1882) was completed in 1273/1857 and dedicated to Nāṣir al-Dīn Shāh Qājār (r. 1264-1313/1848-96)

The Arab poet and anthologist Abū Tammām (d. 231/845) was born in Jāsim in Syria, between Damascus and Darʿā. After a first period as a weavers' assistant in Damascus and as a water-seller in Cairo, studying poetry on the side, he had his breakthough as a poet after his return to Syria in the time of al-Muʿtaṣim billāh (r. 218-27/833-42). Considered as the greatest panegyrist of his time, he sang the praises of the caliph and many other public figures of his age. Besides Egypt, Abū Tammām also travelled to other regions, his most celebrated sojourn being in Hamadan where he compiled his famous poetic anthology the Kitāb al-ḥamāsa . The present work is a similar compilation by him, though smaller and much less known. Edited previously on the basis of one manuscript from Istanbul, the present facsimile edition is of a second manuscript, this time from Yazd. Some folios missing but good readings, interesting marginalia.
