Rural granaries in northern Gaul (6th century BCE-4th century CE) : from archaeology to economic history /

: In recent years, storage has come to the fore as a central aspect of ancient economies. However studies have hitherto focused on urban and military storage. Although archaeological excavations of rural granaries are numerous, their evidence has yet to be fully taken into account. Such is the ambition of Rural Granaries in Northern Gaul (Sixth Century BCE - Fourth Century CE) . Focusing on northern Gaul, this volume starts by discussing at length the possibility of quantifying storage capacities and, through them, agrarian production. Building on this first part, the second half of the book sketches the evolution of rural storage in Gaul from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity, setting firmly archaeological evidence in the historical context of the Roman Empire.

Queens, consorts, concubines : Gregory of Tours and women of the Merovingian elite /

: Gregory of Tours hoped to inspire the believers in sixth-century Gaul with examples of righteous and wicked deeds and their consequences. Critiquing his own society, Gregory contrasted vengeful queens, rebellious nuns, and conniving witches with pious widows, humble abbesses, and tearful saints. By examining his thematic treatment of topics including widowhood, marriage, sanctity, authority, and political agency, Queens, Consorts, Concubines reassesses the material shaped by such concerns, including e.g. Gregory's accounts of Brunhild, Fredegund, Radegund, and other important elite women, Merovingian political policies (marital alliances, ecclesiastical intrigue, even assassinations), and seemingly unrelated topics such as Hermenegild's rebellion and the career of Empress Sophia. The result: a new interpretation of an important witness to the transformations of Late Antiquity.

Gallo-Roman Bronzes and the Process of Romanization: The Cobannus Hoard /

: This book constitutes the first comprehensive publication of a cache of eight bronzes from east-central Gaul. The types of objects and accompanying inscriptions suggest that these bronzes originally came from a sanctuary of a god named Cobannus. The first part of the book describes, analyzes, and interprets the individual objects, which are divided between the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Shelby White - Leon Levy Collection. The latter part of this work places the cache within a chronological, cultic, and cultural context. The Cobannus hoard is valuable not only from an artistic point of view but also for the information it provides on many different aspects of the religious, social, and political life of Roman Gaul. The book is lavishly illustrated, with 2 maps and 117 illustrations.
