Galen and Chrysippus on the soul : argument and refutation in the De placitis, books II-III /

This volume deals with books II and III of the On the Doctrines of Hippocrates and Plato by the medical scientist and philosopher Galen of Pergamum (129-c. 210 CE ). In these books Galen offers an extensive critique of Stoic psychology, quoting a large number of passages from the otherwise lost treatise On the Soul by the great Stoic philosopher Chrysippus. This first full-scale study of Chrysippus' mode of argumentation considers the fragments both in their Galenic context and in relation to Stoicism in general. A separate discussion is devoted to Galen's aims and methods and the traditions he is indebted to. Though designed as a foil for the treatment of Chrysippus, it can also be read by those interested in Galen's methodology for its own sake.

This collection of essays highlights Ancient, Byzantine and Medieval developments in the discussion of scientific method and argument in the comment(arie)s on Aristotle's Posterior Analytics and related methodological passages in the Aristotelian corpus. Despite the importance of these discussions, the larger part of the commentary tradition on the Posterior Analytics still remains uncharted. The contributors to this volume identify and explore three important strands of interpretation, viz. This book claims that Aristotle followed an aspect theory of predication. On it statements make a basic assertion of existence that can be more or less qualified. It is claimed that the aspect theory solves many puzzles about Aristotle's philosophy and gives a new unity to his logic and metaphysics. The book considers Aristotle's views on predication relative to Greek philology, Aristotle's philosophical milieu, and the history and philosophy of predication theory. It offers new perspectives on such issues as existential import; the relation of Categories 2 andamp; 4; the place of differentiae and propria ; the predication of matter; unnatural predication; and the square of opposition. Aristotle and mathematics : aporetic method in cosmology and metaphysics /

John Cleary here explores the role which the mathematical sciences play in Aristotle's philosophical thought, especially in his cosmology, metaphysics, and epistemology. He also thematizes the aporetic method by means of which he deals with philosophical questions about the foundations of mathematics. The first two chapters consider Plato's mathematical cosmology in the light of Aristotle's critical distinction between physics and mathematics. Subsequent chapters examine three basic aporiae about mathematical objects which Aristotle himself develops in his science of first philosophy. What emerges from this dialectical inquiry is a different conception of substance and of order in the universe, which gives priority to physics over mathematics as the cosmological science. Within this different world-view, we can better understand what we now call Aristotle's philosophy of mathematics.

Interest in Theophrastus, Aristotle's pupil and successor as head of the Peripatetic School, has increased considerably since the 1992 publication of Theophastus of Eresus: Sources for his Life, Works, Thought and Life . Now comes an extensive commentary on the ethical sources. It considers Theophrastus in relation to Aristotle, to other members of the Peripatos and to the Stoic philosophers who became Theophrastus' rivals. Special attention is given to Theophrastus' insistence that virtue by itself cannot guarantee happiness. Traditions of theology : studies in Hellenistic theology, its background and aftermath /

The nine articles in this volume were orginally presented at the VIII. Symposium Hellenisticum in Lille in August 1998. The authors discuss a set of theological questions that were central to the doctrines of the dominant schools in the Hellenistic age, such as the existence of the gods, their nature, and their concern for humankind. While the philosophers of the Classical age had kept their distance from conventional religion, the Stoics and Epicureans saw the need to come to terms with the religious tradition both in a critical and in a supportive sense. Especially the challenge by the Sceptics forced the followers of the dogmatic schools (Stoics, Epicureans) to clarify the basis of their theological tenets. Many of the texts that are accessible to us only in a fragmentary state were still highly influential in the early Christian era, so that the reconstruction of the theological views of the Hellenistic philosophers form an important part not only of the history of philosophy, but also of Christian theology and the history of religion in general. One distinctive feature of the volume is that it mirrors the changes of perspective that took place over the many centuries in this area, thus presenting the Hellenistic contribution within the larger framework of Greek philosophical theology.

This book provides a translation of the only surving ancient commentary on Plato's Goroias , written by the Alexandrian Platonist Olympiodorus in the sixth century A.D. There are substantial notes on the commentary, which assist the reader to understand the context of Olympiodorus' Platonism, the choices available to him as an interpreter, and the special characteristics of his interpretation. A full introduction tackles the issues of greatest interest that arise from the work, including the author's mission as a Hellenist resisting Christian attacks on his discipline. Indices are provided. The authors show that there is much more of value in this commentary than has often been supposed, and that the differences between Olympiodorus' approach and those of modern commentators are often illuminating.

Simplicius on the planets and their motions : in defense of a heresy /

Though the digression closing Simplicius' commentary on Aristotle's De caelo 2.12 has long been misread as a history of early Greek planetary theory, it is in fact a creative reading of Aristotle to maintain the authority of the De caelo as a sacred text in Late Platonism and to refute the polemic mounted by the Christian, John Philoponus. This book shows that the critical question forced on Simplicius was whether his school's acceptance of Ptolemy's planetary hypotheses entailed a rejection of Aristotle's argument that the heavens are made of a special matter that moves by nature in a circle about the center of the cosmos and, thus, a repudiation of the thesis that the cosmos is uncreated and everlasting.
