Failed Historical Scientific Instruments /
:
Can a scientific instrument be regarded as a failure? Why and how? By shedding light on the complexity of these questions, the volume marks a step forward in the way historical scientific instruments can be analysed and displayed. The essays show how diverse failures can be, and how the assessment of scientific devices may change over time - some surprisingly becoming more successful. In addition to studies of how technical features led to failure, the authors examine the roles played by social bias and behaviour, commercial and economic circumstances, and political factors.

"This work is based upon and retrieved from the 'Geographic Information System' (GIS) and the database that were created through the Egyptian Antiquities Information System (EAIS) project in the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA). The objective of this project is to gradually develop a comprehensive official documentation of historical sites in all the governorates of Egypt, and consequently to provide realistic and coherent site information, not only to researchers, but primarily to governmental agencies, which would use this information in protecting and managing the sites. The Cahiers consists of two parts: The first part, in paper format, contains introductory manuals, attribute tables of all sites, satellite images, topographical maps and keys of cadastral maps covering the whole governorate. The second part, in digital format (CD), contains an individual descriptive Cahiers for each site, sorted by markaz, and including detailed maps and information about the history, archaeological contents, legal status, state of preservation, and bibliography of each site"--Book jacket. :

Egil's saga : traditional evidence for Brúnanburh compared to literary, historic and archaeological analyses /
:
Was Egil's Saga 'written' by Snorri Sturluson or by more than one person? Was it embellished by Snorri or others? Where did the Brúnanburh traditions come from? Is it accurate enough to be used as a historic source - a factual reference? This study aims to identify the incongruities within this saga demonstrating a correct analysis.

Brill's companion to George Grote and the classical tradition /
:
George Grote's (1794-1871) extensive publications on ancient Greek history and philosophy remain landmarks in the history of classical scholarship. Since the late 20thcentury, lively interest in the works of Grote has seen his profile revived and his ongoing significance highlighted: he has taken up his rightful place among the most celebrated nineteenth-century classical intellectuals. Grote's critical engagement with Greek historiography and philosophy revolutionized classical studies in his day - a revolution set against both long-established interpretations and prevailing trends in German Altertumswissenschaft. Twenty-first-century scholarship shows that Grote's works remain lively, sparkling and relevant, as they offers valuable insights that cut across the intellectual borders of the Victorian age. His diligent scholarship, fascination with evidence and sound judgement, intertwined with intriguing and insightful narrative prose, continue to captivate the attention of modern readers. In Brill's Companion to George Grote and the Classical Tradition Kyriakos N. Demetriou leads a team of prominent scholars to contextualize, unravel and explore Grote's works as well as provide a critical assessment of his posthumous legacy.

New Developments in the Theory of the Historical Process : Polish Contributions to Non-Marxian Historical Materialism /
:
The first part of this book contains a selection of Leszek Nowak's (1943-2009) works on non-Marxian historical materialism, which are published here in English for the first time. In these papers, Nowak constructs a dynamic model of religious community, reconstructs historiosophical assumptions of liberalism and considers the methodological status of prognosis of totalitarization of capitalist society. In the second part of the book, new contributions to non-Marxian historical materialism are presented. Their authors analyze mechanisms of the oligarchization of liberal democracy, the democratization of real socialism, and the development of early modern Ottoman and post-war Chinese societies.
