Mobile pastoralism and the formation of Near Eastern civilizations : weaving together society /

: "In this book, Anne Porter explores the idea that mobile and sedentary members of the ancient world were integral parts of the same social and political groups in greater Mesopotamia during the period 4000 to 1500 BCE. She draws on a wide range of archaeological and cuneiform sources to show how networks of social structure, political and religious ideology, and everyday as well as ritual practice, worked to maintain the integrity of those groups when the pursuit of different subsistence activities dispersed them over space. These networks were dynamic, shaping many of the key events and innovations of the time, including the Uruk expansion and the introduction of writing, so-called secondary state formation and the organization and operation of government, the literary production of the Third Dynasty of Ur and the first stories of Gilgamesh, and the emergence of the Amorrites in the second millennium BCE" --

Susa and Elam : archaeological, philological, historical and geographical perspectives : proceedings of the international congress held at Ghent University, December 14-17, 2009 /

: In December 2009, an international congress was held at Ghent University in order to investigate, exactly 20 years after the 36th RAI "Mésopotamie et Elam", the present state of our knowledge of the Elamite and Susean society from archaeological, philological, historical and geographical points of view. The multidisciplinary character of this congress illustrates the present state of research in the socio-economic, historical and political developments of the Suso-Elamite region from prehistoric times until the great Persian Empire. Because of its strategically important location between the Mesopotamian alluvial plain and the Iranian highlands and its particular interest as point of contact between civilizations, Susa and Elam were of utmost importance for the history of the ancient Near East in general.

The reign of Adad-nīrārī III : an historical and ideological analysis of an Assyrian king and his times /

: In The Reign of Adad-nīrārī III , Luis Siddall examines the evidence and edits new inscriptions from the king's reign to investigate the chronology, campaigns, imperial administration and royal ideology of the period. While historians have typically viewed this period as one of turmoil, imperial recession, political weakness and decentralisation, Siddall shows that Adad-nīrārī's reign marked a period of imperial stability, chiefly through changes to the administration. However, while politically successful, the imperial policy affected the king's ideological expression, particularly in terms of the description of the campaigns in Adad-nīrārī's inscriptions and his limited use of royal titles. \'Scholars working on the Neo-Assyrian period cannot afford to miss Siddall's fresh assessment of the evidence for Adad-nirari's reign. He offers a re-evaluation of several texts but perhaps more importantly, he proposes a few methodological innovations that shed new light on the history of Assyria in the 9th century.\' Bill T. Migration and Islamic ethics : issues of residence, naturalization and citizenship /

: Migration and Islamic Ethics, Issues of Residence, Naturalization and Citizenship addresses how Islamic ethical and legal traditions can contribute to current global debates on migration and displacement; how Islamic ethics of muʾakha, ḍiyāfa, ijāra, amān, jiwār, sutra, kafāla, among others, may provide common ethical grounds for a new paradigm of social and political virtues applicable to all humanity, not only Muslims. The present volume more broadly defines the Islamic tradition to cover not only theology but also to encompass ethics, customs and social norms, as well as modern political, humanitarian and rights discourses. The first section addresses theorizations and conceptualizations using contemporary Islamic examples, mainly in the treatment of asylum-seekers and refugees; the second, contains empirical analyses of contemporary case studies; the third provides historical accounts of Muslim migratory experiences. Secularization in contemporary religious radicalism : an introduction /

: The concept of secularization has grown to become one of the most important features of contemporary religious thought. This book introduces and examines the thinking of sixteen key theologions, philosophers and historians of religion to explain (a) why by the late nineteenth century the traditional concept of God as an ontologically real being came to be considered no longer necessary and (b) how the new perspective on God, which accepts him only as an idea, turned into the preferred approach of today's religion and philosophy, namely "religious radicalism".

Literature and society in the fourth century AD : performing paideia, constructing the present, presenting the self /

: Late Antiquity is often assumed to have witnessed the demise of literature as a social force and its retreat into the school and the private reading room: whereas the sophists of the Second Sophistic were influential social players, their late antique counterparts are thought to have been overshadowed by bishops. Literature and Society in the Fourth Century AD argues that this presumed difference should be attributed less to a fundamental change in the role of literature than to different scholarly methodologies with which Greek and Latin texts from the second and the fourth century are being studied. Focusing on performance, the literary construction of reality and self-presentation, this volume highlights how literature continued to play an important role in fourth-century elite society.

Res publica constituta : Actium, Apollo, and the accomplishment of the triumviral assignment /

: The years surrounding the decisive battle of Actium in 31 BC, and the various measures undertaken by the victor Augustus to create and legitimate a new system of government in Rome are among the most discussed aspects of Roman history. This book re-evaluates Augustus' rise to power, first as triumvir along with Antonius and Lepidus, and then as sole ruler, focusing particularly on the part played by propaganda and ideological claims. Augustus is shown to have acknowledged the Actium war as a civil as well as an external war, and the commemorations of the battle at the site and in Rome are re-assessed, along with the role ascribed to Apollo in the victory. The celebrated settlement of 28-27 BC is shown to have constituted the accomplishment of the triumviral assignment.
