In Mughal Occidentalism , Mika Natif elucidates the meaningful and complex ways in which Mughal artists engaged with European art and techniques from the 1580s-1630s. Using visual and textual sources, this book argues that artists repurposed Christian and Renaissance visual idioms to embody themes from classical Persian literature and represent Mughal policy, ideology and dynastic history. A reevaluation of illustrated manuscripts and album paintings incorporating landscape scenery, portraiture, and European objects demonstrates that the appropriation of European elements was highly motivated by Mughal concerns. This book aims to establish a better understanding of cross-cultural exchange from the Mughal perspective by emphasizing the agency of local artists active in the workshops of Emperors Akbar and Jahangir.

Codex Amrensis 1 , the first volume of the series Documenta Coranica contains images and Arabic texts of four sets of fragments (seventy-five sheets) of the Qurʾān codex, once kept in the ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ Mosque at Al-Fusṭāṭ, and now in the collections of the National Library of Russia, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha and the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art. It includes an extensive introduction, the facsimile of the original, and the full text with annotations.The manuscript, copied during the first half of the 8th century and written in ḥiǧāzī script, contains diacritical signs for about 20% of the letters, without any signs for short vowels. It varies from today's reference editions of the Qurʾān in verse numbering and has a different orthography. Ottoman Turkish and Çaĝatay MSS in Canada : a union catalogue of the four collections /

There are over 275 Ottoman Turkish and Çaĝatay manuscripts in Canada, including more than 200 in the collection of Professor Eleazar Birnbaum. These are remarkable in terms of age (mostly 15th to 17th century) and subject range. The descriptions in this catalogue are unusually detailed: they include author, title, subject, contents, first and last words, date of manuscript, calligraphy, foliation, dimensions, and the location of similar manuscripts elsewhere. Among other special features are details of watermark designs in the paper (useful for dating undated manuscripts), descriptions of seals and notes of previous owners, and many colour illustrations. The catalogue also describes all Turkish manuscripts in the three other small Canadian collections: at the University of Toronto, McGill University (Montreal), and the Royal Ontario Museum.

The corpus of Aramaic incantation bowls from Sasanian Mesopotamia is perhaps the most important source we have for studying the everyday beliefs and practices of the Jewish, Christian, Mandaean, Manichaean, Zoroastrian and Pagan communities on the eve of the Islamic conquests. The bowls are from the Schøyen Collection, which has some 650 texts in different varieties of Aramaic: Jewish Aramaic, Mandaic and Syriac, and forms the largest collection of its kind anywhere in the world. This volume presents editions of sixty-four Jewish Aramaic incantation bowls, with accompanying introductions, translations, philological notes, photographs and indices. The themes covered include the magical divorce and the accounts of the wonder-working sages Ḥanina ben Dosa and Joshua bar Peraḥia. It is the first of a multi-volume project that aims to publish the entire Schøyen Collection of Aramaic incantation bowls.

This is a work on the codicology of Islamic manuscripts with a special emphasis on manuscripts in Persian. According to the great Iranian codicologist Iraj Afshar it is the most detailed and complete work in its field in Persian after Mahdī Bayānī's Kitābshināsi-yi kitāb-i khaṭṭī , published posthumously in 1353/1974-75. The work is divided into two parts: the first part discusses all the elements related to the physical existence of a manuscript in the order in which these come to be, while the second part describes various aspects of the embellishments with which manuscripts were often provided once the codex had been produced. The work is extremely detailed and comes with many photographs in illustration of the text. Special attention is drawn to the care with which the author records the terminology around Islamic manuscripts in Persian. As such, this work may be regarded as complementary to A. Gacek's Arabic Manuscripts and The Arabic Manuscript Tradition.

To know a culture, is to know its written tradition. Before the coming of the printing press, books were transmitted in manuscript form. When texts started to get printed rather than copied, earlier works that until then had only existed in manuscript, came to be printed too. Until the early nineteenth century, a fair copy of a handwritten text would be all that was needed to turn an older work into a printed book. Today, all this has changed and most ancient texts are now published on the basis of a commonly accepted methodology. In the Islamic world, where we have thousands of works in manuscript that still await a proper edition, these modern methods are not always accessible to local scholars and uncritical editions still abound. The National Archives of Pakistan were founded in 1951. The manuscript section of the Archives is divided into two parts: manuscripts purchased and manuscripts donated. Of the purchased manuscripts a catalogue describing 107 Persian, Arabic, Pashtu, Punjabi, and Urdu manuscripts was published in 1974. In 1998 a grandson of Muftī Faḍl ʿAẓīm Bhīravī-from an old family of muftis-donated his grandfather's collection of manuscripts, books and magazines. The collection contains around 2.000 manuscripts, some 1.500 of which are in Persian. Among these, several contain works composed by members of the Bhīravī family themselves, or copied or annotated by them. The present catalogue of the Persian manuscripts in this collection, compiled by the well-known Pakistani specialist of Islamic manuscripts, ʿĀrif Nawshāhī, is the first comprehensive catalogue to be published and supersedes an earlier and partial description of them by Masʿūd Aḥmad Khān, published in Nawādir magazine in Lahore, between 2002 and 2005.

The Kitāb al-taʿarruf li-madhhab al-taṣawwuf by Abū Bakr b. Isḥāq al-Kalābādhī (d. 380-85/990-995) is one of the most famous early manuals on Sufism. Written in Bukhara under the strongly orthodox Samanids, it consists of four parts: an explanation of the term ṣūfī and a listing of famous Sufis with a typology of their writings, an exposition of the Sufī creed and its conformity with orthodox Islam, an explanation of the spiritual path of the Sufi with accompanying terminology, and a description of Sufi conduct and of their special relation with God. The work saw four commentaries, the present one by Ismāʿīl Mustamlī Būkhārī (d. 434/1043) being one of them. Starting each time with a brief quotation from the original Arabic, the commentary in Persian. This is a facsimile edition of a manuscript from the Bhīravī collection in the National Archives of Pakistan, dated 473/1081. The manuscript is incomplete, with about half of the commentary missing.
