Cassius Dio the Historian : Methods and Approaches /

: This volume focuses on Cassius Dio as a historian - the only historian who allows us to follow the developments of Rome's political institutions during a more than thousand year period, from the foundation of the city to Cassius Dio's retirement from public life in 229 CE. The volume explores the Roman historian's methodology and agendas, all of which influenced his approaches to Rome's history. It offers a reassessment that rests on a deeper study of his relationship with historiographical traditions as well as his narrative and structural approach to Roman history. It examines Cassius Dio as both a writer in the historiographic tradition with his own agenda for writing The Roman History and a historian with his own ambition to tell the history of Rome.

Making history : Josephus and historical method /

: The encounter between interpretation and history in the writings of Josephus provides the conceptual framework for this collection of essays. The contributions in this volume, which were presented at an international colloquium entitled "Josephus: Interpretation and History" held in Dublin in 2004, are united, not by a single view of Josephus, but by the question of historical method, both ancient and modern. These essays take up aspects of a problem basic to all researchers who would use Josephus for historical purposes, namely: What is the relationship between narratives and history? Organized thematically, the volume reflects a critical engagement with the texts of Josephus, other literary texts, case studies of particular events, and material remains.

The Deuteronomist's history : the role of the Deuteronomist in historical-critical research into Genesis-Numbers /

: In The Deuteronomist's History , Hans Ausloos provides for the first time a detailed status quaestionis concerning the relationship between the books Genesis-Numbers and the so-called Deuteronom(ist)ic literature. After a presentation of the origins of the 18th and 19th century hypothesis of a Deuteronom(ist)ic redaction, specific attention is paid to the argumentation used during the last century. Particular interest also is paid to the concept of the proto-Deuteronomist and the mostly tentative approaches of the Deuteronom(ist)ic 'redaction' of the Pentateuch during the last decades. The book concludes with a critical review and preview of the Deuteronom(ist)ic problem. Each phase in the Deuteronomist's history is illustrated on the basis of the epilogue of the Book of the Covenant (Exod. 23:20-33).
