J.K. Elliott has been identified as one of the Main exponents of so-called thoroughgoing textual criticism. In this collection of fifty seven of his essays from the past forty years are articles on methodology as well as on praxis (with a selection of important textual variants, including some of especial interest for exegesis). Also included are several essays on textual criticism which emphasise its relevance for the discussion of the synoptic problem and there are also a number of assessments of printed editions of the Greek New Testament. A bibliography of Elliott's writings is appended. Recent research on the text of the Psalms and Gospels in Greek and in certain versions, principally Coptic, Georgian and Armenian, reveals common characteristics when attempting to separate later editions of a text from its earliest forms. The essays in this collection give concrete examples of the issues involved and suggested explanations for textual changes. Les versions anciennes de la Bible ont un intérêt majeur dans la mesure où elles traduisent un modèle qui n'est pas celui des traductions modernes et conservent ainsi des formes textuelles disparues, souvent très anciennes. C'est en particulier le cas des versions géorgiennes, pour lesquelles des convergences sont apparues entre les recherches menées à Tbilisi et dans diverses équipes européennes. Early Christians built on the stories of Jesus' birth found in the New Testament. Their later accounts, many of them found nowadays among collections of non-canonical ('apocryphal') texts, are important and interesting. They give insights into the growth of Christian theology, especially concerning the role and status of Mary, and also the way in which the earliest stories were elaborated and interpreted in popular folk religion. A range of the earliest accounts is presented here in fresh translations; it includes some rare Irish material. The texts are arranged in small units and synoptically, in order to permit readers to compare texts and to see the differences and similarities between them. J.K. Elliott has selected and arranged the texts, and he provides an introductory chapter to the genre. He also includes a full and helpful bibliography to benefit readers who may wish to pursue this comparative study more deeply.
