Chicago on the nile : a century of work by the epigraphic survey of the university of chicago /

: "Chicago on the Nile relates the colorful story of the University of Chicago's Epigraphic Survey expedition to Egypt, from its conception in 1924 by the first American Egyptologist, James Henry Breasted, through its development over the course of a century to become the major scientific and social presence it is today-not just in Egypt but throughout the world. Initially envisioned as a small group of scientists devoted to documenting the ancient historical inscriptions and reliefs on the walls of the temple of Medinet Habu in Luxor, the Epigraphic Survey's work grew to encompass many of the most important sites in Egypt, including Karnak, Luxor Temple, the tomb of Kheruef, Saqqara, Abydos, and the Beit el-Wali temple in Nubia. The story places this work within the larger contexts of Egyptian and international politics, the vicissitudes of the world financial situation, and academic policies. Drawing on hundreds of letters and photos, most of them previously unpublished, the book explores why the Epigraphic Survey chose specific sites for its work, the often grand expectations for its projects and publication program, and the ultimate results. The history of Chicago House, the Survey's headquarters and residence, is described in detail and offers many amusing anecdotes of social life there over the past century. As such, Chicago on the Nile provides a who's who of Egyptologists and archaeologists who worked for and interacted with the Survey to save the endangered texts and reliefs on the ancient monuments of the Nile Valley"--

From document to history : epigraphic insights into the Greco-Roman world /

: In From Document to History: Epigraphic Insights into the Greco-Roman World , editors Carlos Noreña and Nikolaos Papazarkadas gather together an exciting set of original studies on Greek and Roman epigraphy, first presented at the Second North American Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy (Berkeley 2016). Chapters range chronologically from the sixth century BCE to the fifth century CE, and geographically from Egypt and Asia Minor to the west European continent and British isles. Key themes include Greek and Roman epigraphies of time, space, and public display, with texts featuring individuals and social groups ranging from Roman emperors, imperial elites, and artists to gladiators, immigrants, laborers, and slaves. Several papers highlight the new technologies that are transforming our understanding of ancient inscriptions, and a number of major new texts are published here for the first time.

Inscribed Athenian laws and decrees 352/1-322/1 BC : epigraphical essays /

: This book collects eighteen papers which make original contributions to the study of the inscribed laws and decrees of the city of Athens, 352/1-322/1 BC, the most richly documented period of the city's history. Originally published in academic journals, conference proceedings and Festschriften between 2000 and 2010, they lay groundwork for the author's new edition of these inscriptions, IG II³ Part 1, fascicule 2. The papers, which are based on fresh comprehensive autopsy of the stones and study of squeezes, photographs and early transcripts, report important epigraphical findings (e.g. new readings, restorations, joins and datings), and include studies of onomastics and of the chronology and the history of the period.

Whose Error Anyway? Epigraphic and Orthographic Variation in a Book of the Earth as Evidence...

: This article considers instances of variation among determinatives within the so-called “Book of the Earth,” as attested in the burial chamber of Ramesses VI. Variants that appear to occur as deliberate contrivances of the ancient authors are distinguished from those that might have arisen as a result of scribal error. The occurrence of variants with thematic or mythological significance and their clustering within the three dimensional space of the burial chamber are then evaluated as evidence for the use of master document(s), which have otherwise been lost, in the execution of the monument’s decorative program. http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/jarce.55.2019.a010

Life and loyalty : a study in the socio-religious culture of Syria and Mesopotamia in the Graeco-Roman period based on epigraphical evidence /

: The formula 'for the life of' is often found in votive inscriptions, cast in Aramaic and other languages, which originate from the Syrian-Mesopotamian desert and adjacent areas and which roughly date from the first three centuries A.D. They belong to objects like statues and altars that usually were erected in temples and other structures with a ritual or sacred function. The inscriptions establish a relationship between the dedicator and one or more beneficiaries, those persons for whose life the dedication was made. Since the social context evidently bears on both the meaning of the inscriptions as well as the status of the dedications, this volume deals with the nature of the relationships and the socio-religious function the dedications perform.

Augustan and Julio-Claudian Athens : a new epigraphy and prosopography /

: While there is now renewed interest in the history of Athens under the Roman empire, the Augustan and Julio-Claudian periods remain relatively neglected in terms of extended study. Thus the only comprehensive historical works on the period and its epigraphy remain those of Paul Graindor, which were published before the discovery of the Athenian Agora and its epigraphical wealth. This study aims to help provide a basis for new research on early Roman Athens, in the form of an epigraphical and historical reference work, in two parts. The Epigraphical Catalogue (Part I) represents both a companion and supplement to the Attic corpus of the Inscriptiones Graecae (Minor Editio) as it pertains to the Augustan and Julio-Claudian period. The Prosopographical Catalogue (Part II) offers an updated prosopography of the period as it relates to the material of the Epigraphical Catalogue. An appendix provides a chronological list of the period's major office-holders, liturgists, and priesthoods.
