: Ḥāfiẓ Abrū (d. 833/1430) was a Timurid historian who spent the greater part of his active life in Herat. An accomplished chess-player, he was a regular guest at the court of the chess-loving Tīmūr Lang (d. 807/1405). His works were all commissioned by Tīmūr's son Shāhrūkh (d. 850/1447), whom he had joined at his court in Herat after his accession to the throne in 807/1405. The Jaghrāfiyā is of special interest because in the parts on Fārs, Kirmān,Transoxania and Khurāsān, geographical data-often collected personally by him during military campaigns in which he took part-are supplemented with much valuable historical information. The three volumes published here contain the first of the two books of which the Jaghrāfiyā is composed, treating of Kirmān (vol. 3), Fārs (vol. 2), and the known world to the west of these (including Arabia), with separate listings of mountains, rivers, lakes and seas (vol.1 , beginning vol. 2). 3 vols; volume 2.

: Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī (d. 672/1274) was an influential philosopher, theologian, mathematician and astronomer, besides being the first director of the famous observatory at Marāghah near Tabriz as well as a man of politics. Author of a large number of scholarly works, he is especially known for such treatises as his Tajrīd al-iʿtiqād on theology; his Zīj-i Īlkhānī on astronomy; his commentary on Avicenna's (428/1037) Kitāb al-ishārāt wal-tanbīhāt on philosophy and logic; his Āghāz wa anjām on Ismaili eschatology; his Awṣaf-al-ashrāf on mysticism; and his Akhlāq-i Nāṣirī on ethics. In Iran Ṭūsī stands in high regard and studies on him abound. : The founder of the Mawlawiyya order of dervishes, Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī (d. 672/1273) is the most celebrated and widely quoted mystical poet of the Persianate world. Born in Balkh in 604/1207, he was still a child when his father, a preacher, emigrated westwards with his family, moving to Malaṭya, Sivas, Akshehir, Larende and, finally, Konya. It was in Konya that Rūmī, who had also received a regular education, met the people who would give his life a decisive turn towards mysticism: first, his father's former pupil Sayyid Burhān al-Dīn Muḥaqqiq (d. 637/1239-40) and then, most of all, the celebrated mystic Shams al-Dīn Tabrīzī (d. 645/1247). Rūmī's Mathnawi-yi maʿnawī is a didactic poem inspired by his favourite student Ḥusām al-Dīn Čelebi (d. 683/1284). Composed in six fascicles ( daftar ), it took several years to complete. The edition printed here is an enhanced version of the one by Nicholson, with Nicholson's introductory essays and notes translated into Persian. 4 vols; volume 1.

Tārīkh-i ʿālam ārā-yi amīnī : Sharḥ-i ḥukmrāni-yi salāṭīn-i Āq Qūyūnlū wa ẓuhūr-i Ṣafawiyān /

: Born in Shiraz and a student of one of the founders of the Shiraz School in philosophy, Jalāl al-Dīn Dawānī (d. 908/1502-03), Faḍlallāh b. Rūzbihān Khunjī (d. 927/1521) was a scholar who wrote on a variety of subjects, with more than thirty titles to his name. In his younger years, Khunjī had travelled several times to Cairo and the Hejaz, studying the traditional Islamic sciences under a number of scholars there. The rest of his life he mostly spent in the eastern part of the Persianate world, moving from court to court as circumstances required. The work that is published here is historical, being a chronicle of the reign of the Aq Qoyunlu ruler Yaʿqūb b. Uzun Ḥasan (d. 896/1490) and the emergence of the Safavids, covering the years 882-96/1478-91. Based on a clear vision of historiography, this rare contemporary document, written from memory and oral sources, is largely a witness account of events.

Rubāʿiyyāt-i Muʾmin Yazdī : bih hamrāh chand ghazal u qiṭʿa /

: Muʾmin Ḥusayn Yazdī (d. 1018/1609) was an Islamic scholar and a poet. Born in Yazd around 948/1541, his father was librarian to the governor of Yazd at the time, Shāh Niʿmatallāh Bāqī (d. 994/1586 or 996/1588). Ever since his childhood, Muʾmin was eager to learn. Thanks to his father he could go to Shiraz in search of higher education. There he followed the lectures of, among others, Mullā Bāghnawī (d. 995/1587), the famous academic and author of a whole series of glosses and super-commentaries on works in philosophy, theology, and logic. Muʾmin became a respected scholar and even resided in Mekka for a time, besides visiting the holy cities of Najaf, Karbala, and Mashhad. As a specialist of quatrains Muʾmin can be compared to authors like ʿUmar Khayyām (d. ca 517/1123) or Bābā Afḍal Kāshānī (d.667/1268-69). In the latter part of his life Muʾmin went through a mental crisis, choosing a life of isolation.

Dīwān-i Ghiyāth al-Dīn-i Kujujī /

: Born into an influential family from Kujuj near Tabriz, Khwājah Ghiyāth al-Dīn Shaykh Muḥammad Kujujānī was a relative of the well-known mystic Muḥammad b. Ṣiddīq Kujujī (d. 677/1278). Better known as Khwāja Shaykh, Kujujānī held the office of Shaykh al-Islām of Tabriz under the Jalāyirid rulers Shaykh Uways (d. 776/1374) and his son Ḥusayn. Like his forebear, Khwāja Shaykh had Sufi leanings and possessed a flourishing khānqāh (Sufi convent) in Tabriz. In 783/1382, Shaykh Ḥusayn was killed by his brother Aḥmad (d. 813/1410). Under Aḥmad, Khwāja Shaykh was still a man of importance, at ease among governors and heads of state, which is clear from his involvement in Aḥmad's negotiations with some of his enemies. However, fearing Khwāja Shaykh's influence as a spiritual leader, Aḥmad had him murdered in 787/1385 or 788/1386. Popular in Azerbaijan and Iraq in his lifetime, Khwāja Shaykh's poetry is published here for the first time. Contains material in Fahlawī (Azeri)

: The Arab poet and anthologist Abū Tammām (d. 231/845) was born in Jāsim in Syria, between Damascus and Darʿā. After a first period as a weavers' assistant in Damascus and as a water-seller in Cairo, studying poetry on the side, he had his breakthough as a poet after his return to Syria in the time of al-Muʿtaṣim billāh (r. 218-27/833-42). Considered as the greatest panegyrist of his time, he sang the praises of the caliph and many other public figures of his age. Besides Egypt, Abū Tammām also travelled to other regions, his most celebrated sojourn being in Hamadan where he compiled his famous poetic anthology the Kitāb al-ḥamāsa . The present work is a similar compilation by him, though smaller and much less known. Edited previously on the basis of one manuscript from Istanbul, the present facsimile edition is of a second manuscript, this time from Yazd. Some folios missing but good readings, interesting marginalia.

Khulāṣat al-ashʿār wa-zubdat al-afkār. Volume 6.9 : Bakhsh-i Shīrāz wa nawāḥi-yi ān /

: In Persian literature, tadhkira ('note', 'memorandum') works are for the most part collections of biographies of poets, combined with selections from their writings. The earliest such work is Dawlatshāh Samarqandī's Tadhkirat al-shuʿarāʾ (completed in 892/1487), which set a standard for posterity. The tadhkira genre was especially popular in the 10th/16th century and following. The work by Mīr Taqī al-Dīn Kāshānī (alive in 1016/1607) published here is an important example of this. It consists of an introduction, four divisions, and an epilogue ( khātima ), six volumes in all. From among these volumes, the epilogue listing some 394 poets from specific cities and regions in the Persianate world, many of whom were contemporaries of the author, is of special interest. Having met with many of them on his literary travels, their biographies contain a lot of information on the social and cultural climate of the time, besides new poets and poems. : During the reign of Shāh ʿAbbās I (r. 996-1038/1587-1629), the Safavid state was at the top of its power and magnificence. When ʿAbbās died in 1038/1629, he was succeeded by his grandson Sam Mīrzā, son of former crown-prince Muḥammad Bāqir Mīrzā who had been murdered on his father's orders in Rasht in 1024/1615, taking on the name of Shāh Ṣafī. The reign of Shāh Ṣafī (r. 1038-52/1629-42) marks the beginning of a steady decline of the Safavid empire, ending with the deposition of its last ruler, Shāh ʿAbbās III, by Nādir Khān in 1148/1736. The present work by Abu ʼl-Mafākhir Tafrishī is a history of the reign of Shāh Ṣafī. Often based on the author's personal experience or on other eyewitness accounts, it is a welcome source of information on the reign of this cruel and incapable Safavid emperor. : Regarded by many as the last great mystical poet of medieval Persia, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Jāmī (d. 898/1492) spent the greater part of his life in Herat. As a student, he excelled in every subject he engaged in and appeared destined for an academic career. But then, in his early thirties, he went through a spiritual crisis that ended in him joining the Herat branch of the mystical Naqshbandiyya order, led by the charismatic Saʿd al-Dīn Kāshgharī (d. 860/1456). A protégé of three successive Timurid rulers in Herat, Jāmī's wide network of friendships and relations extended from spiritual and literary circles through the political to the academic. With 39.000 lines of verse and over 30 prose works to his name, Jāmī's literary production is quite overwhelming. His Dīwān , published here in two volumes, underwent various changes before he finalized it in 896/1491. : The National Archives of Pakistan were founded in 1951. The manuscript section of the Archives is divided into two parts: manuscripts purchased and manuscripts donated. Of the purchased manuscripts a catalogue describing 107 Persian, Arabic, Pashtu, Punjabi, and Urdu manuscripts was published in 1974. In 1998 a grandson of Muftī Faḍl ʿAẓīm Bhīravī-from an old family of muftis-donated his grandfather's collection of manuscripts, books and magazines. The collection contains around 2.000 manuscripts, some 1.500 of which are in Persian. Among these, several contain works composed by members of the Bhīravī family themselves, or copied or annotated by them. The present catalogue of the Persian manuscripts in this collection, compiled by the well-known Pakistani specialist of Islamic manuscripts, ʿĀrif Nawshāhī, is the first comprehensive catalogue to be published and supersedes an earlier and partial description of them by Masʿūd Aḥmad Khān, published in Nawādir magazine in Lahore, between 2002 and 2005.

: The Eight Books: A Complete English Translation is the first complete translation of the collected poems of Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980), a major Iranian modernist poet and painter and yet under-translated into English. The introduction takes up Sepehri's famously difficult if languidly beautiful style to explain it as a series of appropriations of global modernisms in poetry and painting. It offers close readings of how Sepehri's modernism follows and breaks with the jagged rhythms of Nima Yushij (d.1960), Iran's inaugural modernist poet. In keeping with this modernist framing, the translations replicate Sepehri's rhymes where possible, his fluctuations between formal and colloquial registers, his syntactic distortions, and his embeddings of governmental and other jargons. Shāh Esmā'il and his Three Wives : A Persian-Turkish Tale as Performed by the Bards of Khorasan /

: This book is the first full text and translation of a prosimetric tale from the rich repertoire of Central and West Asian bards to be published with ready access to recordings of both the prose narration and the sung verse. In Iranian Khorasan, bards known as bakhshi present tales that in other regions are performed wholly in a Turkic language with prose narration in Persian, Khorasani Turkish or Kurmanji Kurdish and most verses in Turkish. We compare portions of the full performance transcribed here with excerpts from two performances of Iranian bakhshis in the 1970s. Three introductory chapters and a commentary discuss musical and verbal dimensions of the bakhshi's art in relation to relevant social, historical, and literary contexts.
