The fifteen papers presented here examine three centuries of close, if sometimes ambiguous, links between Christian mission and medicine. The authors, who include theologians, historians, sociologists, physicians and representatives of major international health-care organisations, address themselves to such questions as: How is one to assess the results of past missionary health-care effort? How are modern-day Christian organisations to cope with the burden of institutions set up in the past? What links should the Churches maintain with official medical organisations? What position should the Churches take on the 'faith volume healing' debate begun by certain religious groups? And how is one to lay the groundwork of a theology of health and healing? The complexity of the issues outlined here can - alas - provide no easy answers. Quinze auteurs, compris théologiens, historiens, sociologues, médecins et responsables d'organisations sanitaires, ont centré leurs réflections sur le rôle des Églises chrétiennes dans le domaine de la santé, hier dans les pays de mission, aujourd'hui dans ces mêmes régions où se mûrit une véritable inculturation du christianisme. Dans cet ouvrage ils abordent plusieurs questions fondamentales: comment évaluer les résultats et lacunes de l'action sanitaire des missions dans le passé? Les communautées chrétiennes actuelles doivent-elles porter le poids d'institutions mises en place hier? Quels rapports les Églises doivent-elles entretenir avec les organisations médicales officielles? Comment les Églises se situent-elles dans la dialectique 'foi-guérison' développée par certains groupes religieux? Plus profondément, comment poser les jalons d'une théologie de la santé et de la guérison? Trouver les reponses sur ces questions complexes c'est une tache très délicate.

In Ancient Concepts of the Hippocratic , Lesley Dean-Jones and Ralph Rosen have gathered 19 international authorities in ancient medicine to identify commonalities among the treatises of the Hippocratic Corpus which led scholars of antiquity to group them under the single name of Hippocrates. Most recent scholarship has drawn attention to the divergences between individual treatises and groups of treatises, emphasizing the agonistic facet of the ancient medical profession. In contrast, in this volume contributors look to find points of agreement between the writings that go beyond claims of rationality. Topics considered include ontological claims about the discipline of medicine itself, the view of the patient as a perceiving unity, theories on the function of glands and the importance of regimen.

This collection of papers studies the Hippocratic writings in their relationship to the intellectual, social, cultural and literary context in which they were written. 'Context' includes not only the Greek world, but also the medical thought and practice of other civilisations in the Mediterranean, such as Babylonian and Egyptian medicine. A further point of interest are the relations between the Hippocratic writings and 'non-Hippocratic' medical authors of the fifth and fourth century BCE, such as Diocles of Carystus, Praxagoras of Cos, as well as Plato, Aristotle and Theophrastus. This volume makes available for the first time in English translation a selection of Jacques Jouanna's papers on medicine in the Graeco-Roman world. The papers cover more than thirty years of Jouanna's scholarship and range from the early beginnings of Greek medicine to late antiquity. Part One studies the ways in which Greek medicine is related to its historical and cultural background (politics, rhetoric, drama, religion). Part Two studies a number of salient features of Hippocratic medicine, such as dietetics, theories of health and disease and concepts of psychosomatic interaction, in relation to Greek philosophical thought. Part Three studies the reception of Hippocratic medicine, especially medical ethics and the theory of the four humours, in Galen and in late antiquity.

This collection of essays focuses on the ways in which Greek and Latin authors viewed and wrote about the history of medicine in the ancient world. Special attention is given to medical doxography, id est the description of the characteristic doctrines of the great medical authorities of the past. The volume examines the various attitudes to the history of medicine adopted by a wide range of ancient writers (e.g. Aristotle, Galen, Celsus, Herophilus, Soranus, Oribasius, Caelius Aurelianus). Constantine the African and ʻAlī ibn al-ʻAbbās al-Magūsī : the Pantegni and related texts /

When the tenth-century Kāmil as-sinā'a (or al-Kitāb al-malakī ) of 'Alī ibn al-'Abbās al-Mağūsī was adapted for a Latin-reading audience by Constantine the African in the late eleventh century, the medieval West had, for the first time, the opportunity to use a text which covered the whole of medicine. But the 100-odd extant manuscripts suggest that Contantine's Pantegni was put together over a considerable period of time, and chapters from other Latin and newly-translated Arabic medical works were added to or substituted those of the Kāmil . This book is the first to be devoted to Constantine the African: it sheds light on the School of Salerno and the formation of a medical corpus in the High Middle Ages.
