Institutions of education, then and today : the legacy of German idealism /

: The theme of "Institutions of Education: then and today" not only corresponds with the basic questions raised in German Idealism, but is also central to the question of whether it is legitimate to study German Idealism in our era. Elaborating on this project immediately raises the problem of institutional differentiation, which characterizes multicultural society. Does the variety of educational institutions not, by definition, exclude the shared conception and realization of adulthood that is presupposed by German Idealism? This book shows that German Idealism can still participate in the contemporary debate on education: it is not only helpful in raising relevant questions, but can also be transformed into positions which can deal with the pluriformity that characterizes contemporary society.

The Diez albums /

: The five Diez albums in Berlin, acquired by Heinrich Friedrich von Diez in Constantinople around 1789, contain more than 400 figurative paintings, drawings, fragments, and calligraphic works originating for the most part from Ilkhanid, Jalayirid, and Timurid workshops. Gonnella, Weis and Rauch unite in this volume 21 essays that analyse their relation to their "parent" albums at the Topkapı Palace or examine specific works by reflecting upon their role in the larger history of book art in Iran. Other essays cover aspects such as the European and Chinese influence on Persianate art, aspects related to material and social culture, and the Ottoman interest in Persianate albums. This book marks an important contribution to the understanding of the development of illustrative imagery in the Persianate world and its later perception. Contributors are: Serpil Bağcı, Barbara Brend, Massumeh Farhad, Julia Gonnella, Claus-Peter Haase, Oliver Hahn, Robert Hillenbrand, Yuka Kadoi, Charles Melville, Gülru Necipoğlu, Bernard O'Kane, Filiz Ҫakır Phillip, Yves Porter, Julian Raby, Christoph Rauch, Simon Rettig, David J. Organizing Muslims and integrating Islam in Germany : new developments in the 21st century /

: In Organizing Muslims and Integrating Islam in Germany , Kerstin Rosenow-Williams analyzes the challenges faced by Islamic organizations in Germany since the beginning of the 21st century. Outlining the expectations German political actors have of Islamic organizations and the internal interests of these organizations, the author illustrates that organizational response strategies involve patterns not only of adaptation, but also of decoupling and protest. The study introduces an innovative research framework based on organizational sociology and provides empirical insights into three major Islamic umbrella organizations (DITIB, IGMG, ZMD) and their relationships with other actors. The comprehensive analysis of the German institutional environment and related developments in Islamic organizations makes this study highly relevant to scholars and politicians, as well as the general public.

Islam and Muslims in Germany /

: In the European discourse of post 9/11 reality, concepts such as "Multiculturalism", "Integration" and "European Islam" are becoming more and more topical. The empirically- based contributions in this volume aim to reflect the variety of current Muslim social practices and life-worlds in Germany. The volume goes beyond the fragmented methods of minority case studies and the monolithic view of Muslims as portrayed by mass media to present fresh theoretical approaches and in-depth analyses of a rich mosaic of communities, cultures and social practices. Issues of politics, religion, society, economics, media, art, literature, law and gender are addressed. The result is a vibrant state-of-the-art publication of studies of real-life communities and individuals. Contributors are Kilian Bälz, Kea Eilers, Friedmann Eissler, Konrad Hirschler, Jeanette S. The religious identity of young Muslim women in Berlin : an ethnographic study /

: The Religious Identity of Young Muslim Women in Berlin offers an in-depth ethnographic account of Muslim youth's religious identity formation and their engagement with Islam in everyday life. Focusing on Muslim women in the organisation MJD in Germany, it provides a deeper understanding of processes related to immigration, transnationalism, the transformation of identifications and the reconstruction of selfhood. The book deals with the collective content of religious identity formation and processes of differentiation, engaging with the changing role of religion in an urban European setting, restructuring of religious authority and the formation of gender identity through religion. Synnøve K.N. Bendixsen examines how the participants seek and debate what it means to be a good Muslim, and discusses the religious movement as individual engagement in a collective project.

Governing Muslims and Islam in contemporary Germany : race, time, and the German Islam Conference /

: In 2006 against the background of the increasing problematization of Muslims and Islam in German public debate, the German government established the German Islam Conference. In a post 9/11 world, this was a time period shaped by the global war on terror, changes in the German naturalization law, the proliferation of racism targeting Muslims, and the expansion of security apparatuses. In Governing Muslims and Islam in Contemporary Germany Luis Manuel Hernández Aguilar critically analyzes the institutionalization of the Conference and the different projects this institution has set in motion to govern Islam and Muslims against the looming presence of racial representations of Muslims. The analysis begins with the foundation of the Conference until the end of its second phase in 2014.

Brill's companion to the classics, fascist Italy and Nazi Germany /

: The first ever guide to the manifold uses and reinterpretations of the classical tradition in Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany, Brill's Companion to the Classics, Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany explores how political propaganda manipulated and reinvented the legacy of ancient Greece and Rome in order to create consensus and historical legitimation for the Fascist and National Socialist dictatorships. The memory of the past is a powerful tool to justify policy and create consensus, and, under the Fascist and Nazi regimes, the legacy of classical antiquity was often evoked to promote thorough transformations of Italian and German culture, society, and even landscape. At the same time, the classical past was constantly recreated to fit the ideology of each regime.

Georg Busolt : his career in his letters /

: This book is a study of Georg Busolt (1850-1920), a noted German historian of classical Greece. The treatment is based on a collection of his own letters, mainly written to other scholars. Over 100 letters from Busolt to others are collected and edited here. Each letter, in the original German, is presented with commentary and the whole is woven into a chronological narrative and survey of Busolt's career. There are four chapters (The Busolt Family; Königsberg; Kiel, Göttingen), the last three corresponding to the universities where he studied and taught. Despite Busolt's eminence and the continued usefulness of his two great handbooks ( Griechische Geschichte; Griechische Staatskunde ), nothing has ever been written about him. Moreover, the narrative gives a picture of Prussian universities and academic issues during his period - a crucial one for the development of German education - and is thus a contribution to the history of scholarship.

Eduard Meyer : Leben und Leistung eines Universalhistorikers /

: Eduard Meyer (1855-1930) was among the most important historians of his age. After Mommsen he is the best known German ancient historian. From 1902 he taught ancient history in Berlin and from 1919/20 he was vice-chancellor. His most important work \'Geschichte des Altertums\' includes the ancient oriental cultures, contains a sociological- anthropological methodology and considers all humane studies, especially religious history. This collection treats aspects of Meyer's biography - including his journey to America, his relations with his contemporaries (M. Weber, O. Spengler, U.von Wilamowitz), his university politics, his role in the First World War, his positions on Christianity and Judaism, history of philosophy, and particular research results and their effect.

Brill's companion to German platonism /

: For six centuries, Plato has held German philosophy in his grip. Brill's Companion to German Platonism examines how German thinkers have interpreted Plato and how in turn he has decisively influenced their thought. Under the editorship of Alan Kim, this companion gathers the work of scholars from four continents, writing on figures from Cusanus and Leibniz to Husserl and Heidegger. Taken together, their contributions reveal a characteristic pattern of "transcendental" interpretations of the mind's relation to the Platonic Forms. In addition, the volume examines the importance that the dialogue form itself has assumed since the nineteenth century, with essays on Schleiermacher, the Tübingen School, and Gadamer. Brill's Companion to German Platonism presents both Plato and his German interpreters in a fascinating new light.

The lower German limes = De Nedergermaanse Limes = Der Niedergermanische Limes /

: The frontiers of the Roman empire together form the largest surviving monument of one of the world's greatest states. They stretch for some 7,500 km through 20 countries which encircle the Mediterranean Sea. The remains of these frontiers have been studied by visitors and later by archaeologists for several centuries. Many of the inscriptions and sculpture, weapons, pottery and artefacts created and used by the soldiers and civilians who lived on the frontier can be seen in museums. Equally evocative of the lost might of Rome are the physical remains of the frontiers themselves. The aim of this title is not only to inform the interested visitor about the history of the frontiers but to act as a guidebook as well.

Cannibalism in the linear pottery culture : the human remains from Herxheim /

: The Herxheim enclosure, located in the German region of Palatinate, is one of the major discoveries of the last two decades regarding the Linear Pottery Culture, and probably one of the most significant in advancing understanding of how this culture ended. The spectacular deposits, mostly composed of human remains, recovered on the occasion of the two excavation campaigns carried out on the site, grabbed people's attention and at the same time raised several questions regarding their interpretation, which had so far mostly hesitated between peculiar funerary practices, war and cannibalism. The authors provide here an extensive study of the human remains found at Herxheim, focusing mainly on those recovered during the 2005-2010 excavation campaign.

Depeche Mode. Jacob Taubes between Politics, Philosophy, and Religion /

: Jacob Taubes is one of the most significant intellectual figures in the more recent German intellectual scene-and beyond. However, Taubes was either dismissed as a highly controversial character, or as a mere commentator of ongoing debates, or the reception was restricted to his considerations on religion and the ambivalences of secularity. This volume challenges these reductions by putting Taubes' original, albeit marginalised, texts into new, sometimes surprising contexts. Furthermore, it relates familiar topics in his oeuvre to lesser-known themes that are still highly pertinent for contemporary discussions on faith, modernity, and the limits of politics.
