Dealing with New Order perceptions of the past this study gives insights into how the past can be used for purposes of national-building and regime legitimization and into the nature of the New Order. The Suharto regime created a coherent history that is reflected in recent archaeological and historical research, in popular histories and biographies, in monuments and in school textbooks. The author describes an official history stretching from the proto-Indonesia of Majapahit, through the Indonesian Revolution up to the birth of the New Order in 1965. He also gives a counterview to this history stressing Indonesia's place in the larger Islamic world. The past emphasized political stability and national unity under the guidance of the military and socially disruptive ideas were to be avoided.

In c.1142 work started on the construction of a major castle in the southern Jordanian town of Karak. The largest of a network of fortifications, Karak castle became the administrative centre of an important Crusader lordship. After 1188 Karak and its territories were incorporated into the Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman sultanates. This book traces the history of Karak and the surrounding lands during the Middle Islamic period (c.1100-1650 CE). The book offers an innovative methodology, combining primary textual sources (in Latin and Arabic) with archaeological data (principally the ceramic record) as a means to reconstruct the fluctuating economic relations between Karak and other regions of the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean.

"Since Mohammed VI's accession to the throne in 1999, Morocco has pursued a continental foreign policy. The Kingdom aspires to be recognized as an emerging African power both in its identity and in its space of projection. Born in Shiraz and a student of one of the founders of the Shiraz School in philosophy, Jalāl al-Dīn Dawānī (d. 908/1502-03), Faḍlallāh b. Rūzbihān Khunjī (d. 927/1521) was a scholar who wrote on a variety of subjects, with more than thirty titles to his name. In his younger years, Khunjī had travelled several times to Cairo and the Hejaz, studying the traditional Islamic sciences under a number of scholars there. The rest of his life he mostly spent in the eastern part of the Persianate world, moving from court to court as circumstances required. The work that is published here is historical, being a chronicle of the reign of the Aq Qoyunlu ruler Yaʿqūb b. Uzun Ḥasan (d. 896/1490) and the emergence of the Safavids, covering the years 882-96/1478-91. Based on a clear vision of historiography, this rare contemporary document, written from memory and oral sources, is largely a witness account of events.
