Hermann Cohen was a passionate philosopher whose national engagement was an integral component of his work. This national engagement comprised a cultural 'Germanness' (Deutschtum), ethically oriented to the state, and a religious Judaism beyond the political. These two forms of \'nationality\' influenced Cohen's system of philosophy and his Jewish thought from his broadest to his most subtle points. The National Element in Hermann Cohen's Philosophy and Religion explores Cohen's views on World War I, Zionism, Jewish orthodoxy, assimilation, and racism. Then it looks at his system: logical dispositions of the idea of nationality, the ethics of the nation-state, and Cohen's aesthetics of national elements of expression. In connection with that, the study explores the Jewish dimension of nationality, a cornerstone for the concept of revelation and communal service in Cohen's Religion of Reason Out of the Sources of Judaism .

Zeno's Republic, a design of the ideal state consisting of gods and wise citizens, has been controversial since antiquity. The study looks at the controversial topics and tries to come to a new reading of the Republic as the vision of a society where life is lived according to natural law. The provocative call to promiscuity, incest and cannibalism can be explained within the frame of the cosmo-biological system, outlined by the founder of the school. This reading confirms that Stoic ethics with its central theory of oikeiosis is not concerned with the individual's self-discovery as with the cosmos' self-preservation. Attached is a collection of the fragments with German translations. Zenons Politeia, der Entwurf eines idealen Staates bestehend aus Göttern und Weisen, ist seit der Antike umstritten. Die vorliegende Studie behandelt nicht nur die kontrovers diskutierten Argumente, sie will auch zu einer neuen Deutung der Politeia als der Vision einer Gesellschaftsform führen, in der das Leben nach dem Gesetz der Natur verwirklicht ist. Die provokante Forderung nach Promiskuität, Inzest und Kannibalismus erfährt auf diese Weise eine Erklärung innerhalb des kosmo-biologischen Systems, das der Schulgründer geschaffen hat. Damit bestätigt sich die vom Autor jüngst vorgelegte Deutung, daß die stoische Ethik mit der Oikeiosislehre als ihrem Zentrum nicht auf die Selbstentfaltung des Individuums angelegt ist, sondern auf die Selbsterhaltung des Kosmos zielt. The Crisis of Citizenship in the Arab World argues that the present crisis of the Arab world has its origins in the historical, legal and political development of state-citizen relations since the beginning of modern history in the Middle East and North Africa. The twelve studies contained in this volume discuss some key-aspects of citizenship from its emergence in Archaic Greece until the Roman period before AD 212, when Roman citizenship was extended to all the free inhabitants of the Empire. The book explores the processes of formation and re-formation of citizen bodies, the integration of foreigners, the question of multiple-citizenship holders and the political and philosophical thought on ancient citizenship. The aim is that of offering a multidisciplinary approach to the subject, ranging from literature to history and philosophy, as well as encouraging the reader to integrate the traditional institutional and legalistic approach to citizenship with a broader perspective, which encompasses aspects such as identity formation, performative aspect and discourse of citizenship.

In The Antonine Constitution , Alex Imrie approaches the famous edict of AD 212 from numerous angles, offering an assessment of its rationale that is rooted in the dynamic period of the early third century. Controversial since its discovery, it is depicted here as a keystone in Caracalla's attempt to revolutionise the public image of the Severan dynasty after murdering his brother. There is an inherent paradox between the apparently progressive nature of the edict, and the volatile emperor responsible for it. The enigma is only heightened by a dearth of ancient evidence relating to the legislation. By combining literary and material evidence with the surviving papyrological record, Alex Imrie shows that Caracalla's rationale is best understood in an embedded context.
