Erziehung ohne Streit ist kaum vorstellbar und das ist - so die überraschende These des Autors - kein Ärgernis. Im Gegenteil: Erziehung kann nur demokratisch sein, wenn Konflikte in der und über Erziehung akzeptiert, im Vertrauen auf eine gewaltarme Austragung riskiert und im öffentlichen und wissenschaftlichen Gespräch reflektiert und repräsentiert werden. Im Buch wird diese Einsicht in den Schriften der erziehungstheoretischen "Klassiker" Friedrich Schleiermacher und Klaus Mollenhauer aufgespürt. In einer kritischen Lektüre von Hannah Arendts agonalem Politikbegriff bringt der Autor moderne Erziehungstheorien und gegenwärtige Theorien radikaler Demokratie ins Gespräch. Erkennbar wird so, dass moderne Erziehungstheorien über einen demokratietheoretischen Sinn verfügen und Demokratie ohne ihre Erneuerung im Streitgeschehen der Erziehung nicht denkbar ist. Ziel demokratischen Erziehens ist nicht Harmonie, sondern das Eingehen, Ertragen und Erfahren demokratischer Auseinandersetzungen.

In Plato on Democracy and Political technē Sørensen argues that the question of democracy's 'epistemic potential' was one that Plato took more seriously than is usually assumed. While he famously rejected democracy on the basis of its inherent inability to accommodate political expertise ( technē ), he did not think that this failure on democracy's part was necessarily inevitable but a concept that required further examination. Sørensen shows that in a number of his most important dialogues ( Republic, Gorgias, Statesman, Protagoras, Theaetetus ), Plato was ready to take up the question of democracy's epistemic potential and to enter into strikingly technical and sophisticated discussions of what both rule by technē and rule by the people would have to look like in order for the two things to be compatible.

Chr., als das Imperium Romanum eine Reihe tiefgreifender Veränderungen durchlief. Grundlage der vorliegenden Studie stellt eine prosopographische Zusammenstellung dar, in welcher Lebensläufe senatorischer Amtsträger ausgehend von aktuell bekannten Quellenzeugnissen rekonstruiert werden. Obschon militärische Spitzenfunktionen im Laufe des 3. Although the most important functions within the Roman army were gradually filled by members of the ordo equester instead of viri clarissimi and the senatorial order thereby suffered a loss of importance during the Third century, it remained of utmost significance for the stability of the Imperium Romanum in times of crisis.

The arguments within the contemporary literature paint a clear picture: popular discourse is marked with extreme partisanship and polarization, threatening democracy, tolerance, diversity, pluralism, and cooperation. Polarization simplifies and deforms language, ideas, and people. Polarization reduces the complexities of social life into an oppositional binary based on crude distinctions revolving around partial and harmful reified conceptions of self and other. Since the egocentric ''us versus them" narratives catalyze conflicts which tend to violence, polarization is itself a cause of violence. The project of peace, then, is aided by the project of depolarization. But what can we do to bring about a transformation away from polarity to peace?
