Hercules furens /

: This is most comprehensive study of Seneca's Hercules Furens to date and indeed of any Roman tragedy. Apart from illustrating the poetic language, the literary conventions and the dramatic technique of the play, the book highlights the figure of the Roman Hercules in relation to its Greek model, the Euripidean Herakles. The comprehensive introduction on myth, modern interpretations and textual transmission of the play is followed by a discussion of the newly discovered collation of the codex Etruscus by J.F. Gronovius. The detailed commentary is provided with a new critical edition and a new German translation. The work includes a full bibliography, an analytical index and a complete index of passages cited. Special attention is given to literary motifs and topoi as well as to Seneca's poetic language in its pivotal position between the Augustan poets and Neronian-Flavian epic.

Technopaignia, Formspiele in der griechischen Dichtung

: Technopaignia is the first comprehensive collection and scholarly analysis of a corpus of literary phenomena whose particularity consists in the artistic play with formal features (acrostics, anagrams, palindromes et cetera). The study both discusses each phenomenon separately as a part of the history of ancient literature and touches upon more fundamental questions about the conception of language, the interaction of literary production and reception, the relation of literary and non-literary forms of writing, the nature of art et cetera It thus combines a literary approach with issues from other fields of classical studies. Furthermore, most technopaignia have enjoyed a long tradition of imitation and revival, hence this book provides a basis for reception studies and the study of modern literatures.

: Pindar's Sixth Olympian Ode is considered one of the poet's most brilliant victory odes. This is the first full-scale commentary on it. Adorjáni presents Greek text with critical apparatus, translation and metrical analysis. Three introductory chapters treat matters of history (background, date, performance) and literary criticism. Then follows a verse-by-verse commentary rooted in the tradition of philological exegesis, concentrating on grammatical, stylistic and interpretive features. Until now the Sixth Olympian has been praised chiefly for its magnificent and lucid presentation of the myth of Iamos, a seer of Arcadian origin and ancestor of the prophetic clan of the Iamidae. This commentary illuminates both the overwhelming depth of thought and the cunningly wrought structure of this masterpiece, contributing to a better understanding of Pindar's verbal artistry.

: Leonardo Bruni Aretino ( c. 1370-1444) was one of the most gifted and prolific translators of Greek authors in the early Italian Renaissance and a bestseller whose works often circulated in more than a hundred manuscripts. Moreover, Homer ranks as the most admired Greek poet in the Renaissance. The 'Orationes Homeri', id est Bruni's translation of three speeches from the embassy scene, are of focal interest in the studies of Renaissance literature in its many aspects: survival of ancient authors and their influence on Renaissance literature and literary theory, translation theory and practice, knowledge of Greek poetic language. This first critical edition with an introduction and a systematic commentary presents the 'Orationes Homeri' in comparison with other works of Bruni and translations of Homer by other humanists. It includes the part of the Lorenzo Valla version corresponding to the 'Orationes Homeri' and the Castilian version of the 'Orationes Homeri', which is the first vernacular translation of Homer.
: Includes Leonardo Bruni's Latin and Castilian translations of Prohemium in orationes Homeri, Argumentum, and Orationes Homeri, three speeches from the 9th book of the Iliad.

,Lieber mit Homer irren'? Scheinbar unmögliche Autopsien in den Totenbegegnungen frühkaiserzeitlicher Epik /

: This monograph examines the literary representation of encounters between the living and the dead in Homer and the Roman epic poets of the early imperial period. The focus is on one particular situation: a witness to the afterlife (e.g. Odysseus or the Sibyl) who narrates encounters with the dead that he or she cannot (it would appear) actually have seen. This insufficiently studied and intriguing motif, namely seemingly impossible eye-witness testimony, can already be traced in Homer and then with variations in Vergil, the Culex poet, Lucan, Silius Italicus, and Statius.

: This study investigates the reception of contemporary religion in Hellenistic poetry and analyses the treatment of the cult of Artemis-taken as paradigmatic-in Theocritus' second Idyll and Callimachus' Hymns . Both Theocritus and Callimachus display a lively interest in contemporary religion in all its facets and each dwells upon an aspect of the cult of Artemis absent in earlier poetry: Theocritus depicts her as a goddess of magic, and Callimachus as a city-goddess. These are precisely the features of her cult that gained prominence in the Hellenistic period. The monograph aims to advance scholarly understanding of the integration and transformation of religious motifs in Hellenistic literature.

: The myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt belongs to the great mythical cycles of the ancient world. P. Grossardt now offers the first complete presentation of all literary sources of the Calydonian hunt, as well as of other adventures of its central hero Meleagros. The sources have been arranged by genre and their literary context has been taken well into account. The author gives special attention to the development of different versions of the legend. Individual poets, Grossardt observes, used the myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt as a functional element in a larger context or in conscious contrast to older texts. In reconstructing the prehistory of the legend and its religious background, the author shows that the Calydonian boar-hunt myth originally had the function of an aition for the cult of Artemis Laphria and that it was taken up by the epic tradition long before Homer.

Poetry as window and mirror positioning the poet in Hellenistic poetry /

: Hellenistic Poetry has enjoyed a notable re-appreciation in recent years and received ample scholarly discussion, especially focusing on its reception and innovation of Greek poetic tradition. This book wishes to add to our picture of how Hellenistic poetry works by looking at it from a slightly different angle. Concentrating on the interaction between contemporary poets, it attempts to view the dynamics of imitation and reception in the light of poetical self-positioning. In the courtly Alexandrian surroundings, choosing a poetic model and affiliation determines one's position in the cultural field. This book sets out to chart, not only the well-known complexities of handling the poetic past, but especially their relation to the poetic interaction of the Hellenistic, in particular Alexandrian poets.

Nonnus of Panopolis in context II : poetry, religion, and society ; proceedings of the international conference on Nonnus of Panopolis, 26th - 29th September 2013, University of Vi...

: Nonnus of Panopolis in Upper-Egypt is the author of the 48 books of the last large scale mythological epic in antiquity, the Dionysiaca . The same author also wrote an epic poem on the life and times of Jesus Christ according to St John's Gospel . Nonnus has an outstanding position in ancient literature being at the same time a pagan and a Christian author, living in a time when Christianity was common in the Roman empire, while pagan culture and traditional world views were still maintained. The volume is designed to cover literary, cultural and religious aspects of Nonnus' poetry as well as to highlight the social and educational background of both the Dionysiaca and the Paraphrasis of the Gospel of St. John .

Der XII. Heroidenbrief--Medea an Jason : Einleitung, Text, und Kommentar : mit einer Beilage--die Fragmente der Tragödie Medea /

: This volume contains a critical edition of Ovid's epistle of Medea to Jason, together with the fragments of his lost tragedy Medea , including testimonia . Introduction and commentary deal with matters of language, realia , textual, authenticity, and literary criticism. An examination of the arguments recently put forward against the authenticity of the 12th letter yielded that it cannot be denied Ovidian authorship. Numerous parallels illustrate in particular Ovid's handling of his literary antecedents, notably Euripides and Apollonios. Intensive discussions are also given to questions of genre, epistolary form, influence of elegy and rhetoric, the letter's structure and its position in the collection. The appendix offers a convenient critical summary of the research on Ovid's Medea , together with an extensive commentary on the two fragments.

Berichtigungsliste der Griechischen Papyrusurkunden aus Ägypten : Konkordanz zu Band VIII-XI (B.L. Konkordanz II) /

: The Berichtigungsliste der Griechischen Papyrusurkunden aus Ägypten is a tool of outstanding importance for anyone publishing or studying Greek papyrus documents. The new Konkordanz zu Berichtigungsliste Band VIII-XI or in short B.L. Konkordanz II facilitates finding corrections to published papyri. After the model set out by B.L. Konkordanz I ( Konkordanz und Supplement zu Berichtigungsliste Band I-VII , Leuven 1989), it guides the user first to the main edition of each text, and refers there to the corrections and other remarks in B.L. VIII-XI that must still be taken into account. References to outdated corrections of older editions have been omitted, so that the user of the Berichtigungslisten does not look up references to no purpose. Among the information provided, special attention is drawn to corrected dates, published photographs and important new editions of texts. Anticipating the publication of B.L. XII in the near future, new editions in Sammelbuch XXIV and XXVI have already been incorporated. B.L. Konkordanz II, an indispensible tool for users of the printed editions of the Berichtigungsliste.

: Law played a key role in the workings of Roman culture, and legal discourse was important even in non-legal Latin literature. A proper understanding of that literature requires an investigation of the ways legal language is used. Nevertheless, legal elements have so far been widely neglected by scholars of Latin literature, in particular Augustan poetry. After an examination of legal language as a technical discourse and its role in Latin prose, the present book is devoted to a detailed analysis of legal language and imagery in the work of the Augustan poets. It will, therefore, allow for a better appreciation of these poems as well as of their significance for Augustan culture in the broad sense.

Recently there has been growing interest in particles which play an important role in the interaction between speaker and addressee. This book focuses on the Latin particles nempe, quippe, scilicet, videlicet and nimirum , all of which show how certain the speaker is or would like to be thought. In particular the study concentrates on the differences between these words. With this study the scarcely researched field of Latin modal particles or 'commitment markers' is made much clearer using modern linguistic theories and analyses of comparable particles in modern languages and in Latin.
