The Therapeutics of John the Physician is a medical handbook from the thirteenth century, holding important new evidence on medicine as craft. Of particular interest is a vernacular version of the text, which also contains a commentary. Here, an unknown reviser vividly describes cases and medical procedures, a type of knowledge rarely encountered in scholarly texts. In the present volume, the Therapeutics is published for the first time, along with a translation and an introduction to the topic. Apart from insights into medical history, the text also yields a large quantity of new material on the medical terminology used in everyday language and brings to life the development from ancient to modern Greek. The editorial technique may be of interest to those working on digital humanities.

The recurring problems of eye-disease in Egypt account for the importance that ophthalmology has always had in this country. Eye-diseases and their treatment in Greco-Roman Egypt are documented by a remarkable but insufficiently known body of material: Greek literary papyri, which are often the only witnesses to lost medical works and which provide evidence of original theories, practices and terminology. The first part of this book provides an introduction to ancient ophthalmology, to the medical literature of Greco-Roman Egypt and to Greek medical papyri. Galen (2nd century A.D.), after Hippocrates the most distinguished physician of antiquity, has left us numerous medical works to which no complete Greek-English dictionary or concordance was available until now. This is a dictionary of ancient Greek medical terms as culled from Galen's voluminous works, covering all medical fields: diet, drugs and surgery. It contains approximately 3,000 Greek words and 119,000 citations. Particularly rich is the vocabulary of plant names, which sometimes defy identification. This volume is the first complete critical edition of the Greek medical work of the 1st century A.D. on acute and chronic diseases, by an anonymous writer commonly known as Anonymus Parisinus Darembergii sive Fuchsii. The work includes an introduction, a critical text with apparatus and an English translation accompanied by a commentary on textual, linguistic and factual problems. There is an index of Greek words and an index of drugs and foods. This edition is important both because it is the first complete edition (the former, by Fuchs, being confined to the first half of the work), and because it is based on all four manuscripts that preserve the work (Fuchs employed two of them).

On Theriac to Piso, attributed to Galen : a critical edition with translation and commentary /

Robert Leigh offers a critical edition with translation into English, commentary and introduction of the pharmacological treatise On Theriac to Piso traditionally attributed to Galen. The focus of the work is on the question of authorship and Leigh seeks to show on textual, pharmacological, doctrinal and historical grounds that the attribution to Galen is at least highly problematic and probably mistaken. As well as marshalling the arguments in the introduction, Leigh seeks in the commentary not only to give a general exegesis of the text but also to identify points of agreement and points of difference between the treatise and other works which are undisputedly in the genuine Galenic corpus.

On the art of medicine , or de Arte , embodies as perhaps no other ancient text the full flower of the sophistic movement of the fifth century BCE. It is a rhetorical epideixis in which forensic oratory, philosophy, and medicine are woven into an ambitious display of sophistic polymathy. Unlike much previous scholarship, however, this book does not dismiss de Arte as "merely" rhetorical. Its analysis of the author's philosophical and medical views reveals that he strove to promote a consistent and rationally grounded system capable of responding to theoretical and practical criticisms levied by those who would deny that there was such a thing as medicine or technē at all.

The biography and personality of the \'Father of Medicine\' were known to the world through these important, but little studied letters and speeches. W.D. Smith here presents them newly edited from the most important manuscripts, with a facing English translation, and offers an introduction that gives a literary analysis and places them in relation to ancient history and ancient medical science. The speeches appear to be early (III B.C.) propaganda for the Island Cos, whose presence in the Library at Alexandria contributed to the characterization of the Hippocratic Corpus, while the Democritus Letters belong to the Roman period, after the firm establishment of Hippocrates' reputation.

This book presents a new edition, with translation, introduction and commentary, of two short medical texts, both transmitted in the Hippocratic Corpus but surely neither by the historical Hippocrates. The two works differ considerably in nature and origins: On Sight (Part 1) is a sketchy surgical manual on eye afflictions, perhaps originating in the African continent, and On Anatomy (Part 2) is an allusive account of basic human anatomy, perhaps originating in north Greece. Each text is interpreted in its own right and in the wider context of Hippocratic and other medical writing. Both content and language are closely analysed. The conclusions reached impact on important questions relating to the origin, constitution and dissemination of the Hippocratic Corpus.

The fragments of the Methodists /

The Fragments of the Methodists is a new attempt to give a first corpus of its kind. Manuela Tecusan has collected, edited, and translated all the surviving testimonials concerning one of the most influential 'schools' or doctrines of medicine in late antiquity: Methodism. This volume contains the fragments accompanied by a textual apparatus and facing English translation. The introduction provides a guide to the collection.
