The Sudanese Mahdī headed a millenarian, revivalist, reformist movement in Islam, strongly inspired by Salafī and Ṣūfī ideas, in late 19th century in an attempt to restore the Caliphate of the Prophet and "Righteous Caliphs" in Medina. As the "Successor of the Prophet", the Mahdī was conceived of as the political head of the Islamic state and its supreme religious authority. On the basis of his legal opinions, decisions, proclamations and "traditions" attributed to him, an attempt is made to reconstruct his legal methodology consisting of the Qurʾān, sunna , and inspiration ( ilhām ) derived from the Prophet and God, its origins, and its impact on Islamic legal doctrine, and to assess his "legislation" as an instrument to promote his political, social and moralistic agenda.

From the early phases of modern missions, Christian missionaries supported many humanitarian activities, mostly framed as subservient to the preaching of Christianity. This anthology contributes to a historically grounded understanding of the complex relationship between Christian missions and the roots of humanitarianism and its contemporary uses in a Middle Eastern context. Contributions focus on ideologies, rhetoric, and practices of missionaries and their apostolates towards humanitarianism, from the mid-19th century Middle East crises, examining different missionaries, their society's worldview and their networks in various areas of the Middle East. In the early 20th century Christian missions increasingly paid more attention to organisation and bureaucratisation ('rationalisation'), and media became more important to their work. Ẓafar-nāma is the title of a number of Persian works, in poetry or prose, mostly in glorification of some ruler or dynasty. As examples one could cite the Ẓafarnāmā-yi Tīmūrī (9th/15th cent.), the Ẓafarnāma-yi Shāh Jahān (11th/17th cent.), or the Ẓafarnāma-yi Kābūl (13th/19th cent.). The anonymous Ẓafarnāma-yi Khusrawī published here clearly stands in that tradition. Composed in 1279/1862-63, it was written with the purpose of recording the major events and achievements in the reign of the Manghit ruler of Bukhara, Amīr Sayyid Naṣrallāh b. Ḥaydar (reg. 1257-77/1841-60), preceded by an account of the happenings that led to his coming to power. The Manghits of the Khanate of Bukhara were a Turco-Mongolian dynasty that ruled over Transoxania between 1756 and 1920. The present work gives a detailed, insider account of many of the events that shaped the history of the region halfway the nineteenth century. As such, it is an invaluable and much-needed source of information.

The book reveals how discussion about marriage and family evoked claims of women's freedom and rights in a highly charged literary and cultural landscape where lesser-known female intellectuals jostled for public space alongside well-known male social reformers. Definitions of Islamic ethics remained central to these debates, and the book illustrates how claims of social obligation, religious duty and freedom balanced and negotiated each other in a period of nationalism and reform. By doing so, it also illuminates a story of Muslim politics that goes beyond the well-established accounts of Muslim separatism and the Pakistan movement.

This study surveys a distinctive type of the "Islamic" book which has been largely neglected in previous scholarship: the genre of illustrated lithographed books produced in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Iran. In addition to introducing the history of printing in Iran and surveying the investigated sources, the study supplies basic data on genres of illustrated books, artists active in lithographic illustration, and aspects germane to this particular field of art. The documentation includes bibliographical references for 116 illustrated books in a total of 351 particular editions and 150 plates with several hundred single illustrations. Lithographic illustration in Iran constitutes the legitimate successor to manuscript illustration, both in content and style. Contrasting with the latter's refinement, lithographed illustrations were produced in large numbers and served as a powerful medium of popular iconography.

Princess Salme, daughter of Sa'id ibn Sultan, ruler of Oman and Zanzibar, was born in Zanzibar on August 30, 1844. In 1866 she fled to Aden where she was baptized with the Christian name Emily and where she married the German merchant Rudolph Heinrich Ruete. In Hamburg three children were born. Her husband died in 1870, and after that she lived in several cities in Germany. In 1885 and again in 1888 she went to Zanzibar. Between 1889 and 1914 she lived in Jaffa and Beirut, and afterwards again in Germany. She died in Jena in 1924. The present work contains a short biography of Princess Salme/Emily Ruete and of her son Rudolph Said-Ruete, a new English translation of her Memoirs , and an English version of her other writings, unpublished so far: Letters Home , Sequels to the Memoirs and Syrian Customs and Usages.
