"According to Raúl González Salinero, the plurality of religious expressions within Judaism prior to the predominance of the rabbinical current disproves the assumption according to which some Jewish customs and precepts (especially the Sabbath) prevented Jews from joining the Roman army without renouncing their ancestral culture. The military exemption occasionally granted to the Jews by the Roman authorities was compatible with their voluntary enlistment (as it was in the Hellenistic armies) in order to obtain Roman citizenship. As the sources attest, Judaism did not pose any insurmountable obstacle to integration of the Jews into the Roman world. They achieved a noteworthy presence in the Roman army by the fourth century CE, at which time the Church's influence over imperial power led to their exclusion from the militia armata"--

Imagining Emperors in the Later Roman Empire offers new analysis of the textual depictions of a series of emperors in the fourth century within overlapping historical, religious, and literary contexts. Drawing on the recent Representational Turn in the study of imperial power, these essays examine how literary authors working in various genres, both Latin and Greek, and of differing religious affiliations construct and manipulate the depiction of a series of emperors from the late third to the late fourth centuries CE. Die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit engages with the topical question of the political role of the Roman plebs in the imperial period and seeks to reconstruct how it may have looked in practice and how it can be defined. Detailed source criticism of Tacitus, Suetonius, Dio Cassius, and others demonstrates that the passages thematizing citizens are primarily narrative in function. This approach further sharpens our understanding of the plebs' actual historical actions both regarding their causes, forms, and extent, as well as their attitude towards the emperors. This reappraisal allows for new insights and corrects numerous prior assessments, especially with regard to the function assigned the plebs as part of the so-called 'system of acceptance'. Die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit befasst sich mit der vieldiskutierten Frage, wie die politische Rolle der stadtrömischen Plebs in der Kaiserzeit ausgesehen haben mag und wie sie definiert werden kann. Die Autorin kann anhand intensiver Quellenkritik, insbesondere der Werke des Tacitus, Sueton und Cassius Dio, einerseits zeigen, dass die Passagen zum Volk in erster Linie eine narrative Funktion erfüllen. Andererseits ermöglicht genau dieser Zugang, die Kenntnisse über die historischen Aktivitäten zu schärfen: etwa hinsichtlich Auslösern, Formen oder Umfang, aber auch der Haltung der Plebs gegenüber den Principes. Dadurch werden neue Einblicke gewährt und etliche Positionen der bisherigen Forschung korrigiert. Als unhaltbar erweist sich insbesondere die Rolle, die der Plebs im sogenannten ,Akzeptanzsystem' zugesprochen wird.

Fergus Millar's works have renewed our approach of the Roman world. He had studied the functioning of the Roman Empire in the perspective of the Emperor's activities, from Augustus to Constantine; as well as the Republic during the last two centuries BC in order to revalue the people within the institutions; and finally the Near East from Augustus to Constantine, and then to the Muslim conquest. He uses to be engaged with the whole evidence (literary, epigraphic, papyrological, juridical and archaeological) that he examines closely with revived view-points. Distinguished and younger scholars have dealt, during a seminar, with the main aspects of Millar's research, its reception and the reactions it has raised, and proposed surveys about current inquiries, as well as perspectives for future studies.
