In this volume Robert Seltzer examines Simon Dubnow (1860-1941) as the most eminent East European Jewish historian of his day and a spokesperson for his people, setting out to define their identity in the future based on his understanding of their past. Rejecting Zionism and Jewish socialism espoused by contemporaries, he argued in "Letter on Old and New Judaism" that the Jews of the diaspora constituted a distinctive nationality deserving cultural autonomy in the liberal multi-national state he hoped would emerge in Russia. Seltzer traces the young Dubnow's personal encounter with European intellectual currents that led him from the traditional shtetl world to a non-religious conception of Jewishness that resonated beyond Tsarist Russia.

The German Assyriologist Fritz Rudolf Kraus was an academic emigrant who was forced to leave Germany during the Nazi period. Kraus spent thirteen years in exile in Istanbul, where he was appointed cataloguer at the Archaeological Museum. During his exile he kept in touch with his family in Germany and with colleagues, in particular his former teacher, Benno Landsberger, who had moved to Ankara in 1935. The selection of his voluminous correspondence presented in this work is an important source for the history of both Turkey and Germany during the years 1937 to 1950. Der deutsche Assyriologe Fritz Rudolf Kraus war ein Wissenschaftler, der Deutschland während der Nazizeit gezwungenermaßen verlassen musste. Kraus verbrachte 13 Jahre im Exil in Istanbul, wo er zum Katalogisierer im Archäologischen Museum ernannt wurde. In Caliphate and Kingship in a Fifteenth-Century Literary History of Muslim Leadership and Pilgrimage Jo Van Steenbergen presents a new study, edition and translation of al-Ḏahab al-Masbūk fī Ḏikr man Ḥağğa min al-Ḫulafāʾ wa-l-Mulūk , a summary history of the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca by al-Maqrīzī (766-845 AH/ca. 1365-1442 CE). Traditionally considered as a useful source for the history of the ḥağğ , al-Ḏahab al-Masbūk is re-interpreted here as a complex literary construction that was endowed with different meanings. Through detailed contextualist, narratological, semiotic and codicological analyses Van Steenbergen demonstrates how these meanings were deeply embedded in early-fifteenth century Egyptian transformations, how they changed substantially over time, and how they included particular claims about authorship and about legitimate and good Muslim rule.

During the reign of Shāh ʿAbbās I (r. 996-1038/1587-1629), the Safavid state was at the top of its power and magnificence. When ʿAbbās died in 1038/1629, he was succeeded by his grandson Sam Mīrzā, son of former crown-prince Muḥammad Bāqir Mīrzā who had been murdered on his father's orders in Rasht in 1024/1615, taking on the name of Shāh Ṣafī. The reign of Shāh Ṣafī (r. 1038-52/1629-42) marks the beginning of a steady decline of the Safavid empire, ending with the deposition of its last ruler, Shāh ʿAbbās III, by Nādir Khān in 1148/1736. The present work by Abu ʼl-Mafākhir Tafrishī is a history of the reign of Shāh Ṣafī. Often based on the author's personal experience or on other eyewitness accounts, it is a welcome source of information on the reign of this cruel and incapable Safavid emperor. In the appendix: a short text on the reign of Shāh Ṣafī by the author's brother, Muḥammad Ḥusayn Tafrishī.

In The Arab Thieves , Peter Webb critically explores the classic tales of pre-Islamic Arabian outlaws in Arabic Literature. A group of Arabian camel-rustlers became celebrated figures in Muslim memories of pre-Islam, and much poetry ascribed to them and stories about their escapades grew into an outlaw tradition cited across Arabic literature. The ninth/fifteenth-century Egyptian historian al-Maqrīzī arranged biographies of ten outlaws into a chapter on 'Arab Thieves' in his wide-ranging history of the world before Muhammad. This volume presents the first critical edition of al-Maqrīzī's text with a fully annotated English translation, alongside a detailed study that interrogates the outlaw lore to uncover the ways in which Arabic writers constructed outlaw identities and how al-Maqrīzī used the tales to communicate his vision of pre-Islam. He published his memoirs of Iraq, Kurds, Turks, and Arabs : politics, travel and research in North-Eastern Iraq, 1919-1925 (London - New York, 1957), but his Persian memoirs remained unpublished. It tells how, after studying oriental languages in Cambridge, he became Consular Officer in Bushire, participated in British campaigns in Mesopotamia during First World War. As a Political Officer in Luristan Edmonds was in charge of the oil fields' security and was sent to Northern Persia after the war, a direct witness of the Jangal upheaval and the 1921 coup d'Etat.

Nūr al-Dīn Jahāngīr (d. 1037/1627) was the fourth Mughal emperor, son of emperor Akbar I (d. 1014/1605) and great-grandson of the founder of the Mughal dynasty, the Timurid prince Ẓahīr al-Dīn Muḥammad Bābur (d. 937/1530). Highly cultivated and a patron of the arts, especially portrait painting, Jahāngīr entertained many artists, literati and other members of the social and cultural elite at his court, where Persian was the dominant language. The author of the present work, ʿAbd al-Sattār b. Qāsim Lāhūrī, was a regular guest for a number of years. A specialist on foreign religions, especially Christianity, he was also present at many of the interreligious debates that were held in Jahāngīr's presence. Jahāngīr had such confidence in ʿAbd al-Sattār that he not only let him keep a record of his nightly entertainments published here, but also consulted him on what and what not to include in his personal record of his reign, the Jahāngīr-nāma.

In the Islamic middle ages, urban histories were for the most part not the kind of chronicle that one might think, covering the political, economic, or cultural history of a particular city over a certain time. Instead, they were a kind of 'who's who' directory of names of a city's prominent inhabitants, mostly from as far back as information would be available until the lifetime of the author. In the case of the city of Nishapur, which saw its greatest blossoming between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, there is al-Ḥākim al-Nīshāpūrī's (d. 405/1014) foundational Taʾrīkh Nīsābūr , an Arabic work-now lost-on which many later biographers relied. Al-Ḥākim's work was continued by ʿAbd al-Ghāfir al-Fārisī (d. 529/1134) in his al-Siyāq li-Taʾrīkh Nīsābūr . The text published here is described as a partial summary of al-Fārisī's work, although Frye in his The Histories of Nishapur (p. 10) still regarded it as a fragment of the Siyāq itself.
