: The recurring problems of eye-disease in Egypt account for the importance that ophthalmology has always had in this country. Eye-diseases and their treatment in Greco-Roman Egypt are documented by a remarkable but insufficiently known body of material: Greek literary papyri, which are often the only witnesses to lost medical works and which provide evidence of original theories, practices and terminology. The first part of this book provides an introduction to ancient ophthalmology, to the medical literature of Greco-Roman Egypt and to Greek medical papyri. The second part presents a critical edition (with a French translation and commentary) of the papyri with theoretical expositions, and a chapter on ophthalmic recipes.

The second part presents the critical edition with French translation and commentaries of seven surgical papyri and a chapter on other medical papyri with some information about surgery.

Punt : die Suche nach dem 'Gottesland' /

: Francis Breyer's Punt. Die Suche nach dem ›Gottesland‹ covers every aspect concerning Punt, this land known only from ancient Egyptian sources. Several disciplines have contributed to the discussion on its localization: Egyptology, Nubien Studies, Botany, Zoology, Anthropology, and African Studies, among others. The various disciplines' arguments are carefully studied, especially with the history of research and the Zeitgeist in mind. For the very first time, the question is asked, which archaeological culture from the horn of Africa can be correlated to the data from the textual and iconographic sources, all of which are collected, translated and commented on. Breyer not only comprehensively reconstructs the entire organization of the Egyptian expeditions, id est participants, routes, trade goods, but also addresses the people of Punt, their cultural background and way of life.

Studies in the Aramaic legal papyri from Elephantine /

: Long recognized as a brilliant cross-cultural study, Yochanan Muffs' work analyzes the legal formulary of the Aramaic papyri from Elephantine, at the first cataract of the Nile, where a Persian garrison comprised of Jewish soldiers and their families lived throughout most of the 5th century B.C.E. These documents are of exceptional importance for the study of ancient Near Eastern law, and Muffs has investigated their formative background through extensive references to cuneiform law, by a method he calls "the Assyriological approach". Virtually every aspect of law-sale of land, marriage and family law, loans and credit, the taking of oaths, and the granting of bequests is studied in great depth and with unusual clarity. Muffs' work has enjoyed renewed interest in the light of more recent discoveries of Aramaic legal documents from later periods, as in the Judean Desert.
