In his book Generations of Sufis , Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī (died 1021), the Sufi master of Nishapur and Shafiʿi traditionist and historian, collected the teachings of 105 Sufi masters who lived between the 2nd/8th and the 4th/10th centuries. Sulami gives a short biography of each master with representative quotations from his teachings. He thereby illustrates the numerous approaches to the spiritual path and the unity of its principles. One of the oldest works of the sort, it assembles the doctrinal foundations from which medieval Sufism developed. It is a key reference which influenced all Sufi literature and even historiography. This is the first translation of a work of this type to be published in a European language. Dans Les générations des Soufis Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī (m. 1021), maître soufi de Nishapur, traditionniste šāfiʿite et historien, collecte l'enseignement de cent cinq maîtres soufis qui vécurent entre le 2e/8e et le 4e/10e siècles. Pour chacun d'eux, Sulamī propose une courte notice biographique et un ensemble de citations représentatives de son enseignement. Il rend ainsi compte de la diversité des approches de la voie spirituelle et de l'unité de ses principes. Cet ouvrage, l'un des plus anciens de ce type, rassemble le socle doctrinal sur lequel s'élabora le soufisme médiéval. Référence incontournable, il eut une influence considérable sur toute la littérature du soufisme et même l'historiographie. Cette traduction est la première en langue européenne d'un ouvrage de ce type.

The Wortatlas der arabischen Dialekte / Word Atlas of Arabic Dialects (WAD) intends to provide an unprecedented survey of the lexical richness and diversity of the Arabic dialects as spoken from Uzbekistan to Mauretania and Nigeria, from Malta to Sudan, and including the Ki-Nubi Creole as spoken in Uganda and Kenya. The multilingual word atlas will consist of four volumes in total with some 500 onomasiological maps in full colour. Each map presents a topic or notion and its equivalents in Arabic as collected from the dialectological literature (dictionaries, grammars, text collections, ethnographic reports, et cetera), from the editors' own field work, from questionnaires filled out by native speakers or by experts for a certain dialect region, and also from the internet. Polyglot legends in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian accompany the maps to facilitate further access. Each map is followed by a commentary in German, providing more details about the sources and the individual forms, and discussing semantic and etymological issues. All quotations are in their original language. The maps mainly show lexical types, detailed and concrete forms are given in the commentaries. An introduction is provided in both German and English and an index of all lexemes in the atlas will be available. The first volume Band I: Mensch, Natur, Fauna und Flora / Volume 1: Mankind, Nature, Fauna and Flora contains subjects such as 'family members', 'professions', 'human qualities'. The second volume, Band II: Materielle Kultur , deals with material culture ('house', 'utensils', 'food', 'clothing', 'vehicles', et cetera) and the third and final volume will focus on verbs, adjectives and function words. The atlas will be indispensable for everyone interested in the modern spoken Arabic language, as well as for dialectologists and for semanticists.

As in many areas of pre-modern history, the study of medieval Islamic history has been critically hindered by the lack of available evidence. Unlike many parallel fields, however, the shortage of contemporary documentary evidence for medieval Islam has less to do with the survival of documents and archives as with their accessibility. A rich documentary legacy survives, but because of its inaccessibility and unfamiliarity to all but the most specialised scholars in the field, it has remained sadly underutilised. This volume contributes to the redressing of that problem. It collects papers given at the conference "Documents and the History of the Early Islamic Mediterranean World," including editions of unpublished documents and historical studies, which make use of documentary evidence from al-Andalus, Sicily, Egypt, the Arabian Peninsula, Syria and Khurasan. Souvent absente du débat sociétal à propos des animaux, la perspective historique chrétienne proposée dans ce volume se veut une contribution originale à la réflexion actuelle sur le statut juridique et éthique des animaux. La restauration de la création aims to examine the status of animals in ancient and medieval Christian thought following an eschatological perspective, that is, focusing on the question of the salvation of animals according to the divine plan. The volume is articulated in three parts: Biblical sources, in particular the promise of the renewal of creation according to Rm 8, 21; Patristic and medieval doctrinal elaborations on the question; finally, contemporary considerations regarding the status of animals in our societies. Often absent from the current social debate on the subject, the historical Christian perspective which this volume proposes is intended as an original contribution to today's ongoing reflexion on the legal and ethical status of animals.

Nearly seventy years after Kirsopp and Silva Lake's publication, La Famille 13 dans l'évangile de Marc offers an enlarged, wholly up-to-date and thoroughly revised study of the text of the Gospel of Mark for the witnesses considered as family members by Didier Lafleur. His extensive survey includes the history of the discovery of the manuscripts, their codicological description and new research on the text. The most part of the book is devoted to the edition of minuscule 788 (Athens, Nat. Lib. 74), considered by the author as the nearest member to the archetype of the group ( f ¹³ ). Based on quite new collations for the all extant manuscripts, the edition provides a positive apparatus. Considérée comme témoin de premier ordre du Nouveau Testament grec, la Famille 13 s'enracine profondément dans l'histoire de la critique. This book investigates a corpus of royal inscriptions and literary texts, with special emphasis on those that are mythological and biblical, stretching over several millennia from the early days of Sumer to the Biblical period, in order to determine the ways in which the concept of water was used, in particular the way it functions in the political and theological ideology of the time. Three literary motifs are the object of a careful study : the crossing of water, the flood and the water of abundance. Though their study shows diversity in evolution, transmission and reception, it appears that their function is common at the heart of the Mesopotamian political theology of royal mediation.

Auf der Grundlage des Werkes von Michel Henry untersuchen die in der Festschrift "Immanenz und Einheit" gesammelten Beiträge das Verhältnis von Immanenz und Einheit unter allgemein systematischen und praktischen Gesichtspunkten. Dabei wird zunächst die Grundlegung dieses Verhältnisses in der abendländischen Metaphysik und in der Phänomenologie, insbesondere im philosophischen Denken Henrys, in den Blick genommen. Darauf aufbauend werden durch Vergleiche zwischen Henrys Philosophie einerseits und den Ansätzen Meister Eckharts, Fichtes, der christlichen Theologie und fernöstlicher Religionen andererseits religionsphilosophische Perspektiven dieses Verhältnisses aufgezeigt. Schließlich werden die ethischen Konsequenzen des Verhältnisses von Immanenz und Einheit analysiert und dessen existentiell-lebenspraktische Bedeutung herausgestellt. Daher bietet die Festschrift einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis des für die Philosophie Michel Henrys so bedeutenden Verhältnisses von Immanenz und Einheit. Based on the oeuvre of Michel Henry, the contributions collected in the Festschrift "Immanenz und Einheit" examine the relation between immanence and unity under general systematic and practical aspects. First, the foundation of this relation in occidental metaphysics and in phenomenology, especially in the thinking of Michel Henry, is analysed. Then, the view of Michel Henry is compared with those of Meister Eckhard, Fichte, Christian theology and eastern religions in order to develop the perspectives of this relation for the Philosophy of Religion. Furthermore, the consequences of the relation between immanence and unity for ethics and its existential significance are considered. Thus, the Festschrift offers a significant contribution to the understanding of the relationship between immanence and unity which is especially relevant for the thinking of Michel Henry.

Dans ce recueil, un certain nombre de contributions, treize, parues à part du premier volume, entre 1992 et 2007, ont été regroupées. The study of their substance, ritual and the circumstances in which the cereal offerings are brought to God demonstrates their great complexity as well as their specific function. His vegetarian utopia has led P to give the cereal offerings a prominent place among the sacrifices. A similar appreciation of the cereal offerings is also found among the Essenes, and, finally, in the Christian Last Supper.

Archaeology of the books of Samuel : the entangling of the textual and literary history /

The books of Samuel are a key link in the history of the biblical text in so much as they are found at a crossroad where different textual traditions encounter each other (MT, LXX, Qumran). Recent research tends to consider that the textual criticism has to take into account the literary aspects which characterise the most ancient transmission of the text. This assessment asks a variety of new exegetical questions considered in this volume: Does the comparative analysis of the textual witnesses permit proving the existence of distinct literary editions? Which are the criteria to deem the literary nature of the variants? Which ideological and theological motives governed the modifications of a previous text? Is it possible to establish a relative chronology between the putative editions? The study of the most ancient history of the text opens an archeology of the monument that are the books of Samuel. The search for their ancient foundations and the bringing to light of later modifications, the consideration both of the restorations and of the ruins of the textual edifice all throw new light on the final construct and its theological significance.

This volume consists of an edition, a translation and a commentary of the most important fragments of 4QInstruction. Initially it deals with the linguistic characteristics of the scroll highlighting the links between 4QInstruction and Ben Sira, and also with the Community Rule and the Hodayot. It then investigates the Sapiential fragments dealing with poverty, husband-wife and parent-child relationships. Finally it examines the eschatological fragments. The work seeks to improve the edition and understanding of this fundamental text enhancing our knowledge of the history and development of thinking at Qumran. Moreover, it examines links which 4QInstruction establishes between purely Sapiential discourse and descriptions of eschatological judgement. This study substantially illuminates our understanding of the Wisdom movement in the early intertestamental period.
