The result is a rich collection of articles on one of the main themes of the Old Testament; a theme that has a fascinating, although not always unproblematic reception history.

Mit dem Ausdruck "Fichte und seine Zeit" können die letzten Jahre des 18. und das erste Jahrzehnt des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zur Völkerschlacht von 1813 überschrieben werden: die ertragreichsten Jahre im Schaffen und Wirken Fichtes. Fichte erarbeitete das System der Wissenschaftslehre keineswegs in Selbstisolierung und ohne Rücksicht auf die spekulativen Anregungen, die er von dem ihn prägenden geistigen und kulturellen Milieu erhielt. Die Jahre des Übergangs vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert sind auch diejenigen, in welche man die Geburt der ,romantischen Bewegung' ansetzt, deren Vaterschaft man wohl Fichte zusprechen muss, obzwar er bald von vielen seiner Schülern verleugnet wurde. Diese Jahre machen zugleich einen entscheidenden Zeitabschnitt in der deutschen Geschichte aus, welcher große Veränderungen - sowohl in staatlich-institutioneller als auch in gesellschaftlicher Hinsicht - mit sich gebracht hat und der mit den Eroberungskriegen Napoleons zu Ende geht, welche eine Zäsur in der deutschen Geschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts bewirkt haben. Die Absicht vorliegenden Buches ist es, das Geflecht der unterschiedlichen Fragestellungen, die mit dem Stichwort "Fichte und seine Zeit" verbunden sind, in Betracht zu nehmen und ihre internen Zusammenhänge und ihre Geschlossenheit deutlich zu machen. The fourth section consists of notes taken by Husserl during Stumpf's lectures on metaphysics in Halle, Stumpf's introduction to the edition of his correspondence with Brentano, which he prepared in 1929, and some important letters pertaining to this correspondence. Das Richterbuch präsentiert einen Rückblick in die Geschichte des Volkes Israel, der eine große Vergangenheit (re)konstruiert und zugleich einen äußerst kritischen Blick auf diese Zeit wirft. Die vorliegende Studie zeigt, wie die Erzählzyklen des Richterbuchs das zentrale Thema, die Suche nach einer verbindlichen und lebensförderlichen Ordnung, aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln darstellen und reflektieren. Die unterschiedlichen Perspektiven treten dabei miteinander in einen kontroversen Dialog, der keine eindeutige oder einseitige Einordnung dieser Epoche erlaubt. Eine detaillierte narratologische Analyse der erzählten Welten der Texte und ihrer Figuren zeigt, dass die Komposition und Zusammenstellung der einzelnen Erzählungen zwar Systematisierungen der Epoche andeuten, diese jedoch stets wieder dekonstruieren. So bleibt das Richterbuch ein Rückblick zwischen Bewunderung und Befremden. The Book of Judges presents a (re)construction of Israel's history that recalls a splendid past but simultaneously offers a very critical view. This study focuses on the narrated worlds of the stories and the way they contribute to the central theme: the search for obligatory and beneficial guidelines for the people. A detailed narratological analysis of the narrated worlds shows how the different perspectives presented in the texts engage in a controversial dialogue. Although the composition of the stories indicates a systematisation, these attempts are repeatedly deconstructed. Thus the Book of Judges eludes any one-sided interpretation and remains a retrospection between admiration and disconcertment.

The improvement of methods, as this took place in the field of biblical research during the '70s, has refined exegetical instruments by adopting features of linguistics and literary criticism. Consequently, it seems appropriate to re-examine the results of genre-critical investigation of New Testament epistolary literature, as these have been reached through the efforts of American scholars in particular, in order to gain further understanding not only on details but also a more comprehensive total view of the epistolary framework.

Egyptologists have been debating for decades about whether or not Egyptian images classify as art . Nevertheless, the term 'art' still serves as a guiding concept for Egyptology. Kai Widmaier offers an overview of how different art-historical interpretive methods influence Egyptological research. His study demonstrates that, due to its adherence to the term art , Egyptology has considerably dissociated Egyptian images from their original contexts. Bilderwelten combines the analysis of Egyptian images from the 6th to the 18th Dynasty with methodological reflection. This leads to both a new terminology of style as well as to an alternative approach to Egyptian images. By differentiating systematically between Egyptian images and Egyptological art , this book lays the foundation for an Egyptology that follows the path of Visual Studies instead of adhering to questionable art-historical methods.

Das Buch versucht, zwei bislang unterschätzte Psalmen im Psalter, die dort weit auseinanderstehen, als 'Entwicklungszusammenhang' aufzufassen und so eine neue Art der Gruppierung - jenseits von Gunkel - zu initiieren. Zugleich wird ein besseres, adäquateres Verständnis beider Gedichte vorgestellt, eruiert teils in wechselseitiger Betrachtung, teils durch die Beleuchtung im Lichte der Traditionen. Im einzelnen stellt sich heraus, daß der Sinn der gruppierten Psalmen sich erst dann so recht zu erschließen beginnt, wenn - hier wie dort ziemlich gleicherweise - priesterliche und prophetische Überlieferungen als Verstehensschlüssel eingeführt werden. Was die beiden Texte im Psalter trotz genetischen Zusammenhangs voneinander unterscheidet, ist der Wechsel von einem historischen Ort zum andern: Das eine Gedicht ist gerade noch vor dem Umschwung zum Frühjudentum zustande gekommen, das andere setzt diesen Neuanfang schon voraus. Das Buch lenkt so die Aufmerksamkeit auf zwei markante Zeugnisse, die auch glaubensgeschichtlich wichtig sind.

Ein Beitrag zur Diskussion um den religionsgeschichtlichen und den kirchengeschichtlichen Begriff der Gnosis versucht Herbert Schmid zu zeigen, dass es vermutlich keine Vorform der Gnosis an den Rändern des antiken Judentums gegeben hat. Sowohl Schenkes Sethianismus, als auch der Valentinianismus und andere frühe Ausprägungen der Gnosis sind vermutlich als frühe Versuche christlicher Theologie zu begreifen. In diesem Zusammenhang erweist sich der Begriff Gnosis als eine durchaus brauchbare Kategorie, um antike Religionsgeschichte zu beschreiben. In Christen und Sethianer. Ein Beitrag zur Diskussion um den religionsgeschichtlichen und den kirchengeschichtlichen Begriff der Gnosis , Herbert Schmid argues that there are no hints for a more primitive and independent form of Gnosticism which developed on the fringes of ancient Judaism. Not only the Valentinian school, but also Hans-Martin Schenkes Sethianism and other early manifestations of Gnosis are probably best understood as early attempts to phrase Christian theology. In this context, the term Gnosticism is a useful category to describe ancient religious history.

This volume brings together a rich and varied collection of essays by Gilles Quispel (1916-2006), Professor of the History of the Early Church at Utrecht University from 1951 until his retirement in 1983. During his illustrious career, Professor Quispel was also visiting Professor at Harvard University in 1964/65, and visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven from 1969 until 1974. The fifty essays collected in this volume testify to most of the prominent themes from Professor Quispel's scholarly career: the writings of the Nag Hammadi library in general and the Gospel of Thomas in particular; Tatian's Diatessaron and its influences; the Hermetica ; Mani and Manichaeism; the Jewish origins of Gnosticism; and Gnosis and the future of Christianity. This volume also makes a number of his less known earlier publications (mainly presented under the heading 'Catholica') available to the international community. Until shortly before he died, Professor Quispel remained active in his study of the Gospel of Thomas . He had been one of the first to acquire the Coptic text of the Gospel of Thomas , of which he published the first translation in 1959 and his final translation in 2005. He was also active in researching the Diatessaron , and Valentinus 'the Gnostic'. One of his most recent essays - published for the first time in this volume - is on 'the Muslim Jesus.'

This book examines modes of economic contribution in the ancient world through taxes, tribute, or so-called gifts. Specialists in the field of the ancient Near East, Egypt, classical Greece, Rome, and Israel, joined by an economic anthropologist, present a fresh evaluation of the textual and archaeological evidence. A prime question explored is the extent to which these disparate sources complement or contradict each other. State-imposed transactions were often recorded with an ideological bias, much dependent on whether the donors and recipients were viewed as in- or outsiders. The present interdisciplinary approach supplies the basis for the ancient economic terminology of contribution, taking into account the specific cultural context, the language of 'international' policy, and the correlation between modern and ancient termini.

This volume deals with one of the oldest midrashim, the Eschatological Midrash from Qumran Cave 4. 4QMidrEschat, previously unknown, is preserved in at least two copies (4QFlorilegium, 4QCatena A) found at Qumran. A reconstruction of 4QFlorilegium and 4QCatena A is given in the first part of the book. The second part is a comparative analysis which shows that both manuscripts are copies of the same former work, 4QMidrEschat. The third part deals with the other exegetical Qumran texts, a definition of 4QMidrEschat's genre, its position among the Qumran literature, and its dating. 4QMidrEschat provides valuable information on Bible interpretation and eschatology among the Essenes in the first century BCE. 4QMidrEschat is of special significance because, according to recent studies, the Essenes are no longer to be regarded as a \'sect\', but as one of the most important Jewish groups of that time.

In Die Gräberfelder von Sedment im Neuen Reich , Henning Franzmeier presents and reassesses the complete results of the previously only partially published excavations undertaken by W.M.F. Petrie and G. Brunton in the New Kingdom cemeteries of Sedment, Middle Egypt, from 1920 to 1921. Through his research, Franzmeier has expanded the corpus of known New Kingdom tombs at Sedment from about 50 to more than 250, including burials of high-ranking officials, and identified a wide range of previously unknown objects. Presenting the development of an important provincial cemetery, this publication provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of New Kingdom Egyptian funerary archaeology and, as a case study, highlights the potentials of reassessing the results of past excavations.

Philosophy of language and other matters in the work of Anton Marty : analysis and translations /

One of the most important students of Franz Brentano was Anton Marty, who made it his task to develop a philosophy of language on the basis of Brentano's analysis of mind. It is most unfortunate that Marty does not receive the attention he deserves, primarily due to his detailed and distracting polemics. In the analysis presented here his philosophy of language and other aspects of his thought, such as his ontology (which ultimately diverges from Brentano's), are examined first and foremost in their positive rather than critical character. The analysis is moreover supplemented by translations of four important works by Marty, including his entire work On the Origin of Language . These are in fact the first English translations of any substantial writings by him. The resulting picture that emerges from the analysis and translations is that Marty has much to say that proves to be of enduring interest for the philosophy of language on a range of topics, especially the meanings of statements, of emotive expressions, and of names as regards both their communicative and their ontological aspects. The volume will be of interest not only to philosophers and historians of philosophy, but also to historians of linguistics and psychology.

Zeno's Republic, a design of the ideal state consisting of gods and wise citizens, has been controversial since antiquity. The study looks at the controversial topics and tries to come to a new reading of the Republic as the vision of a society where life is lived according to natural law. The provocative call to promiscuity, incest and cannibalism can be explained within the frame of the cosmo-biological system, outlined by the founder of the school. This reading confirms that Stoic ethics with its central theory of oikeiosis is not concerned with the individual's self-discovery as with the cosmos' self-preservation. Attached is a collection of the fragments with German translations. Zenons Politeia, der Entwurf eines idealen Staates bestehend aus Göttern und Weisen, ist seit der Antike umstritten. Die vorliegende Studie behandelt nicht nur die kontrovers diskutierten Argumente, sie will auch zu einer neuen Deutung der Politeia als der Vision einer Gesellschaftsform führen, in der das Leben nach dem Gesetz der Natur verwirklicht ist. Die provokante Forderung nach Promiskuität, Inzest und Kannibalismus erfährt auf diese Weise eine Erklärung innerhalb des kosmo-biologischen Systems, das der Schulgründer geschaffen hat.
