The dawn of the bronze age : the pattern of settlement in the lower Jordan valley and the desert fringes of Samaria during the late chalcolithic period and early bronze age i /

: In The Dawn of the Bronze Age Shay Bar presents a detailed account of the pattern of settlement during the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age I periods (mid-Fifth to late Fourth Millennia BCE), in one of the least explored areas of the southern Levant - the lower Jordan valley and the desert fringes of the Samaria mountains. More than 120 surveyed sites and five excavation reports form an essential database for every scholar interested in the archaeology of the Near East in these periods. "Bar has accomplished an impressive task and has provided valuable new information on this important region that forms the transition between the central hill country and the eastern side of the Jordan River." Bene Israel : studies in the archaeology of Israel and the Levant during the Bronze and Iron Ages in honour of Israel Finkelstein /

: This collection of twelve papers, dedicated to Professor Israel Finkelstein, deals with various aspects concerning the archaeology of Israel and the Levant during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Although the area under discussion runs from southeastern Turkey (Alalakh) down to the arid zones of the Negev Desert, the main emphasis is on the Land of Israel. This collection provides the most recent evaluation of a number of thorny issues in Israeli archaeology during the Bronze and Iron Ages and specifically addresses chronology, state formation, identity, and agency. It offers, inter alia, a fresh look at the burial practices and iconography of the periods disscussed, as well as a re-evaluation of the subsistence economy and settlement patterns. This book is finely illustrated with more than sixty original drawings. "...I cannot but emphasize that this volume contains a collection of very interesting and, in some cases, important studies on the archaeology of the Bronze and Iron Age Levant, a fitting tribute to a consummate teacher and researcher." LBK realpolitik : an archaeometric study of conflict and social structure in the Belgian early Neolithic /

: The causes and consequences of violence and warfare have long interested social scientists, historians, and philosophers. While economic motivations for conflict are among the most commonly discussed drivers of human violence, prehistorians have often downplayed economic factors when studying non-state society. This volume explores linkages between conflict and socioeconomic organization during the early Neolithic of eastern Belgium (c.5200-5000 BC), using compositional analysis of ceramics from Linienbandkeramik villages to assess production organization and map intercommunity connections against the backdrop of increasing evidence for conflict.

Beyond the ice : Creswell Crags and its place in a wider European context /

: Since the discovery of Britain's first Ice Age cave art in 2003, the site of Creswell Crags has gained international recognition as one of Britain's leading Ice Age sites. For the first time the history of the site is brought together in one accessible volume. Documenting the early fieldwork at the site it uncovers antiquarian discoveries such as the famous horse engraving, excavations in the 1920s that saw our understanding of our early ancestors take shape, discusses the demise of the Neanderthals and the emergence of Modern Man, and looks at how Creswell Crags grew as a heritage attraction of potential World Heritage Status.

Rockshelter excavations in the East Hamersley Range, Pilbara Region, Western Australia /

: This title offers a detailed study of six exceptional rockshelter sites from the inland Pilbara Region of Western Australia. It provides highly descriptive, chapter-length accounts of archaeological investigations at Jundaru, Djadjiling, HS-A1, HD073APAD13, PAD 3, and HD073A03 rockshelters, which were excavated as part of a mitigative salvage program conducted at the Hope Downs 1 mine between 2007 and 2010. The research findings show that early Aboriginal peoples initially occupied the area ca. 45,000 years ago, demonstrating that the east Hamersley Range contains some of the oldest known Aboriginal archaeological sites in the Australian arid zone. The story of the Pleistocene and Holocene Aboriginal occupation at Hope Downs 1 is long and complex.
