Al-Maturidi and the development of Sunni theology in Samarqand /

Al-Māturīdī (d. 944 CE), the prominent Hanafi scholar from Samarqand, succeeded in formulating a theological doctrine which is widely accepted in Sunni Islam to this day. The present volume which is a revised English translation of the German original published in 1997 examines his teachings by describing their principal characteristics and situating them in the history of kalām. Part one investigates the development of Hanafi thought in Transoxania before Māturīdī's time. Part two deals with the other religious groups (in particular the Mu'tazilites) which emerged in this area during his lifetime. Part three shows how he explained and defended the position of his predecessors; in doing so, he reformed their traditional views, thereby developing his own theology which then became the basis of a new tradition, viz. the Māturīdite school.

In The Oasis of Bukhara: Population, Depopulation and Settlement Evolution , Rocco Rante, archaeologist at the Louvre Museum, presents the results of a large-scale and ambitious regional archaeological investigation of the oasis of Bukhara, corresponding to the delta of the Zerafshan River, from the end of the 1st millennium BCE to the Timurid period. Rante reports the conclusions of several studies of the oasis, realised with the collaboration of distinguished specialists, and covers topics such as human migration, water and the city, urban development and changes in human behaviour. He also revisits the history of this part of Central Asia, providing new historical and cultural insights arising out of the intense archaeological activities undertaken in the field. Traditionally considered part of a single Persian cultural domain, it in fact bears witness to a rich convergence of cultural transmissions and trade routes, with strong external influences from North India as well as strong local characteristics. By a meticulous analysis of the Quranic manuscripts of the Al Bīrūnī Institute of Oriental Studies, Marie Efthymiou depicts the technical changes of bookmaking, providing new evidence on Samarcand paper and revealing Kokand as a major centre of production. An innovative approach of the manuscripts' uses traces their place in society and in the everyday life of worshippers.

ʿAbdallāh Khān b. Iskandar (d. 1006/1598) of the Uzbek Abu ʼl-Khayrid (Shībānid) dynasty was the ruler of the Khanate of Bukhara between 991/1583 and 1006/1598. Before then, he had already defended the territorial interests of his family against other branches of the Abu ʼl-Khayrids, putting his half-witted father on the throne in Bukhara in 961/1554 while he himself became the de facto ruler of the khanate, aged 23. During the time of ʿAbdallāh, Transoxania lived through a whole series of internal and external conflicts against a backdrop of ever changing alliances. In this period, ʿAbdallāh's centralizing policy led to considerable improvements in infrastructure, favouring the development of trade. The present work by Muḥammad Yār b. ʿArab Qaṭaghān is a history of the Abu ʼl-Khayrid dynasty with an emphasis on the reign of ʿAbdallāh Khān. Apart from its obvious historical interest, it contains a lot of linguistic and geographical information, besides highlighting the significance of Persianate culture in that region.

In the Arabic literary tradition, biographies form a class of their own and have always been widely used. Whether about a single person or about some group, their shared objective was to provide an authoritative account of someone's lineage, social or literary career, academic or religious background or affiliation, or connection to some historic event. As examples one could mention Ibn Hishām's (d. 218/834) Sīrat Muḥammad rasūli ʼllāh , Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿa's (d. 668/1270) Kitāb ʿuyūn al-anbāʾ fī ṭabaqāt al-aṭibbāʾ , or Nūr al-Dīn al-Ṭūkhī's (d. ca 900/1494) Quḍāt Miṣr . The author of the present work, Najm al-Dīn al-Nasafī (d. 537/1142-43), was a long-time resident of Samarqand and widely known and respected as jurist. He wrote more than 30 works, in Persian and in Arabic. The present volume contains an inventory of ḥadīth scholars bearing some connection to Samarqand. Its importance lies mainly in the many names of people, places, and books which are otherwise entirely unknown.
