In this commentary on the Egerton Gospel, Lorne R. Zelyck presents a fresh paleographical analysis and thorough reconstruction of the fragmentary text, which results in new readings and interpretations. Details surrounding the acquisition of the manuscript are presented for the first time, and various scholarly viewpoints on controversial topics, such as the date of composition and relationship to the canonical gospels, are addressed. This early apocryphal gospel (150-250 CE) provides traditional interpretations of the canonical gospels that are similar to those of other early Christian authors, and affirms Jesus' continuity with the miracle-working prophets Moses and Elisha, his obedience to the Law, divinity, and violent rejection by Jewish opponents.

It uses as its point of departure a remarkable but insufficiently known documentation: Greek literary papyri (from I B.C. to A.D. VII), which often are unique witnesses to lost medical works, bearing testimony to original theories, practices and vocabulary. The first part of the book provides an introduction to ancient surgery, to Greco-Roman Egypt and to the Greek medical papyri. The second part presents the critical edition with French translation and commentaries of seven surgical papyri and a chapter on other medical papyri with some information about surgery.

The recurring problems of eye-disease in Egypt account for the importance that ophthalmology has always had in this country. Eye-diseases and their treatment in Greco-Roman Egypt are documented by a remarkable but insufficiently known body of material: Greek literary papyri, which are often the only witnesses to lost medical works and which provide evidence of original theories, practices and terminology. The first part of this book provides an introduction to ancient ophthalmology, to the medical literature of Greco-Roman Egypt and to Greek medical papyri. The second part presents a critical edition (with a French translation and commentary) of the papyri with theoretical expositions, and a chapter on ophthalmic recipes. Stesichoros's Geryoneis /

Stesichoros's Geryoneis is without doubt one of the gems of the 6th century. This monograph offers the first full-length commentary (in English) to cover all aspects of the Geryoneis . Included in this monograph is a much-needed revised and up-to-date text together with a full apparatus. As well as concentrating on the poet's usage of metre and language, a particular emphasis has been given to Stesichoros's debt to epic poetry. Innovative too is the proposal that the Geryoneis was closely connected with the cult worship Geryon received in the 6th century. This book has an especial appeal to both those already familiar with lyric and epic poetry, but also, it is hoped, those new to Stesichoros.

This volume discusses Greek subliterary papyri containing mythical catalogues, stories of the Mythographus Homericus, and summaries of Iliad, Odyssey , tragedies, comedies, and poems of Callimachus. The first part of the book explores the following questions: what kind of knowledge is transmitted in the papyri and how is this done? How is the knowledge related to that found in other literature? What do we know about the function and readership of these papyri? Although comparable questions have been asked before regarding some papyri, this study attempts to present a more precise and comprehensive picture based on a systematic examination of all the relevant papyri. The second part contains all the papyrus texts discussed in the first part, thereby offering a convenient aid to the reader and a useful instrument for future research.
