Causing his name to live : studies in Egyptian epigraphy and history in memory of William J. Murnane /

: William J. Murnane (1945-2000) dedicated his life to the epigraphic recording and historical interpretation of the monuments of pharaonic Egypt. In tribute to his important contributions to Egyptology, a prominent group of his colleagues and students offer a range of new studies on Egyptian epigraphy and historiography. Amarna studies loom large in the volume as they did in Murnane's own work. Several chapters investigate the art, history and chronology of the reigns of Akhenaten and his immediate successors. Other contributions deal with historical issues, especially those connected with the epigraphic and archaeological aspects of the Theban temples of Karnak and Luxor. The book is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings.

Samut nord : l'exploitation de I'or du désert oriental à l'époque ptolémaique : avec deux chapitres sur les occupations pharaonique et médiévale du district minier /

: "Located in the Eastern desert of Egypt, Samut North is a site entirely devoted to gold mining. Consisting of areas for the extraction and transformation of gold quartz and two vast buildings dedicated to housing, it was briefly occupied around 310 BC. Before they were destroyed in 2017, the remains of Samut North were exceptionally well preserved and their exploration represented a unique opportunity to fully study a mining facility at the height of gold mining in Egypt. It was also a chance to compare the evidence of the archaeological remains with the descriptions of the ancient mines left by Agatharchides of Cnidus, who lived in the 2nd century BC. The comparison of the data makes it possible to draw up an unprecedented panorama of the operating chain that produced part of the gold that Ptolemy, son of Lagos, needed to conduct his policy in the Mediterranean. The careful study of all the remains, including the most modest ones, also makes it possible to reconstruct the living conditions of the inhabitants (soldiers, logisticians, miners, including perhaps women) who, for some seasons, lived in the middle of the desert to exploit its riches. ... Added to these chapters is a study of three mining villages in Samut district dating back to the New Kingdom and the Middle Ages."--Back cover.

The island city of Tinnīs : a postmortem /

: "On an island in Lake Manzala in the north-east corner of the Nile Delta lie the ruins of the once-prosperous late Roman and medieval port and manufacturing centre of Tell Tinnīs. Although little can be seen above ground, beneath the surface lie archaeological deposits that can be accessed by geophysical and geoarchaeological survey, and remote sensing. In addition, some excavation has taken place, providing evidence for the existence of structures such as cisterns, while ceramics and artefacts from the site's surface provide indications of the lifestyles of the town's occupants and their regional connections. This volume presents the results of archaeological work undertaken at the site between 2004 and 2012, which has produced a relatively detailed impression of the form and nature of the town from its inception around the 3rd century AD to its abandonment in the 13th century in the face of Crusader raids. This new information is discussed in light of the town's relationship to and connectedness with its surrounding landscape, and likewise considers Tinnīs in comparison to contemporary settlements of Egypt's Mediterranean coast"--Page 4 of cover.

The tomb of the priests of Amun : burial assemblages in the Egyptian Museum of Florence /

: The Tomb of the Priests of Amun, also known as Bab el-Gasus, was uncovered in 1891 at Deir el-Bahari (Thebes). The site proved to be the largest undisturbed tomb ever found in Egypt, as there were found the intact burials of 153 individuals that lived under the 21st Dynasty (ca. 1069-945 BC). This outstanding find was subsequently divided in lots of antiquities and dispersed by 17 nations. This volume presents the first comprehensive publication of the Italian Lot, kept in the Egyptian Museum of Florence. Besides the formal description of the objects, a critical assessment of the collection is provided regarding the reconstruction of the burial assemblages, the reuse of the burial equipment and the art historical examination of coffin decoration.

Aramaic graffiti from Hatra : a study based on the archive of the Missione Archeologica Italiana /

: Graffiti are an often neglected but crucial witness to everyday life of ancient civilizations. The Aramaic graffiti from Hatra (North Iraq) can make an invaluable contribution in this sense, distributed as they were in various buildings throughout this city which flourished between the 1st and the Third century AD. Thanks to an effective interaction between epigraphy and archaeology, Marco Moriggi and Ilaria Bucci offer a thorough analysis of the Aramaic graffiti from Hatra as documented by the Archive of the Missione Archeologica Italiana (Turin). In addition to the edition of 48 published and 37 unpublished graffiti, this study further includes the concordances of numbers of all Hatran texts published so far and full archaeological information about the graffiti.

Byblos in the late bronze age : interactions between the Levantine and Egyptian worlds /

: "In Byblos in the Late Bronze Age, Marwan Kilani reconstructs the "biography" of the city of Byblos during the Late Bronze Age. Commonly described simply as a centre for the trade of wood, the city appears here as a dynamic actor involved in multiple aspects of the regional geopolitical reality. By combining the information provided by written sources and by a fresh reanalysis of the archaeological evidence, the author explores the development of the city during the Late Bronze Age, showing how the evolution of a wide range of geopolitical, economic and ideological factors resulted in periods of prosperity and decline. .

The Luxor Obelisk and its voyage to Paris /

: "Transporting the Luxor obelisk from Egypt to Paris was one of the great engineering triumphs of the early nineteenth century. No obelisk this size (two hundred and fifty tons) had left Egypt in nearly two thousand years, and the task of bringing it fell to a young engineer, Apollinaire Lebas, a man of extraordinary resolve and ability. His is a tale of adventure, excitement, and drama, but one hardly known to the English-speaking world. Lebas' team was struck by the plague; they ran out of wood; they had to wait four months for the Nile to rise to free their beached ship. But in the end, The Luxor, with its precious cargo on board, sailed down the Nile. On October 25, 1836 before two hundred thousand cheering Parisians, Lebas raised his obelisk. He was rewarded handsomely by his king, a medal with his name on it was struck, and his body lies in the famous Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris along with French luminaries. Now this first-ever translation of Lebas' account, including digitally enhanced copies of his beautiful drawings, makes his remarkable story available to a wide audience"--

Antique Dealing and Creative Reuse in Cairo and Damascus 1850-1890 : Intercultural Engagements with Architecture and Craft in the Age of Travel and Reform /

: "The commodification of Islamic antiques intensified in the late Ottoman Empire, an age of domestic reform and increased European interference following the Tanzimat (reorganisation) of 1839. Mercedes Volait examines the social life of typical objects moving from Cairo and Damascus to Paris, London, and beyond, uncovers the range of agencies and subjectivities involved in the trade of architectural salvage and historic handicraft, and traces impacts on private interiors, through creative reuse and Revival design, in Egypt, Europe and America. By devoting attention to both local and global engagements with Middle Eastern tangible heritage, the present volume invites to look anew at Orientalism in art and interior design, the canon of Islamic architecture and the translocation of historic works of art"--
