The 12th International Congress of Egyptologists (ICE) was held in Cairo from the 3rd to the 8th of November, 2019. During the Congress, Egyptologists from 30 countries presented 369 papers covering nine themes: archaeology (current methods and fieldwork); art and architecture; site management, conservation and preservation; history; views on the Egyptian past; language, literature and texts; archaeological science and technology; museums and collections; religious thoughts; society and life in ancient Egypt. This volume presents the Proceedings of ICE XII, which is comprised of 137 contributions encompassing the themes of the Congress that were selected for publication.

The shrine of Eileithyia, Minoan goddess of childbirth and motherhood at the Inatos cave in southern Crete /

"This volume is a catalog of the ancient Egyptian imports and Egyptianizing artifacts found in 1962 during the excavation of a cave near Tsoutsouros (ancient Inatos), Crete, Greece. The cave was a sanctuary dedicated to the Minoan and Greek goddess Eileithyia, patron of childbirth and motherhood. The Aegyptiaca of the Minoan-Mycenaean era on Crete were a tangible sign of the political and economic relations between the Aegean rulers and the Egyptian royal court. Certainly some of the Egyptian kings' scarabs that reached Crete from the reign of Amenophis III to the end of the Eighteenth Dynasty are to be explained by official Egyptian-Cretan relations. Guide to Deir el-Medina : village of artists /

The site of Deir el-Medina is unique in its particularly well-preserved archaeological remains, which represent an exceptional ensemble in Egypt (consisting of a village, a necropolis and a temple), and in the rich documentation that it has delivered across the millennia. The inhabitants of Deir el-Medina--artists as well as craftsmen--dug and decorated the hypogea of the sovereigns in the Valley of the Kings and Queens. They did not restrict the use of their talents to benefit only the sovereigns, but decorated, or had decorated by the most skilled amongst them, their own tombs and were buried with hundreds of cult objects and grave goods. The scribes kept archives, which constitute an incredible wealth of information for the history of the New Kingdom and the functioning of the royal sites. They also had literary interests, and some of them established libraries, which are considered among the richest of those that have survived. Walking around the site of Deir el-Medina and studying the paintings that adorn the walls of the rock tombs, the visitor will get to know the spirit of its occupants, their earthly ambitions, the religious and funerary universe of their conception of the afterlife and also the feasts of the multiple deities who composed the local pantheon. Altägyptische Amulette und ihre Handhabung /

Obgleich es aus dem alten Ägypten sowohl zahlreiche erhaltene Amulette als auch Texte mit Hinweisen für ihre Anwendung gibt, fehlt bislang eine angemessene übergreifende Untersuchung dazu. Joachim Friedrich Quack bietet eine detaillierte Behandlung dieser Artefakte und (Meta)texte von der Vorgeschichte (4. Jtsd. v. Chr.) bis in die römische Kaiserzeit (ca. 3.-4. Jhd. n. Chr.). Die Darstellung erfolgt einerseits chronologisch, andererseits thematisch, indem zusammengehörige Sachgruppen übergreifend vorgestellt werden. Bei der Behandlung der Amulette wird ein besonderes Gewicht auf archäologisch gut dokumentierte Gräberfelder gelegt, um chronologische Entwicklungen besser zu fassen. Dadurch kann z.B. eine sehr diesseitsorientierte Amulettausstattung der Dritten Zwischenzeit klar von einer am Vorbild des Osiris orientierten, spezifisch funerären ab der 26. Dynastie differenziert werden.

"Der Tempel der Göttin Hathor in Dendara besitzt zahlreiche kleinere Räume und Kapellen, die durch architektonisch eigens hervorgehobene Zugänge miteinander verbunden, aber auch voneinander abgetrennt sind. Diese wie der Rest des Tempels beschrifteten Zugänge geben sowohl Auskunft über die theologische Gesamtkonzeption des Kultbaus als auch über die jeweils unterschiedliche Bestimmung der einzelnen Räume. In den hieroglyphischen Texten der Türen werden Hathor und andere in Dendara verehrte Gottheiten in Hymnen gepriesen und verschiedene Aspekte der Theologie des Heiligtums abgehandelt. 0Jan Tattkos Studie widmet sich diesen Texten auf den Türen. Analysiert werden die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Dekoration und Architektur: Es wird aufgezeigt, wie durch die Redaktion und Neukonzeption von Textsequenzen und Einzelaussagen aus unterschiedlichen Versatzstücken kohärente Textkompositionen entstanden sind, die an ihren Anbringungsort adaptiert wurden. Somit stehen vor allem Intertextualität und die Frage nach einem einheitlichen Konzept der Inschriften im Fokus der Untersuchung. Dazu werden die Türinschriften inhaltlich und sprachstilistisch untersucht und mit der umliegenden Dekoration verglichen. Die Untersuchung gibt nicht nur Einblicke in den Gestaltungswillen der ägyptischen Priester und in die Dekorationsplanung eines späten ägyptischen Tempels, sondern liefert durch die inhaltliche Analyse der Texte gleichzeitig einen Überblick über die Theologie des Heiligtums in Dendara."--
