: Fifteen years after his death the last book by Willem Cornelis van Unnik (1910-1978) is now published. This great scholar presents here the results of his thorough investigation of self-definition in the Jewish diaspora of late antiquity. After an introductory chapter which includes a brief history of research, Van Unnik investigates the semantic field of the Greek term diaspora , the use of this word in the Septuagint and the New Testament, the history of the term in post-biblical Jewish and Christian writings, and the theological understanding of the term. Van Unnik concludes that in Jewish circles living in the diaspora has always been regarded as an essentially negative and frightening phenomenon, much more so than many modern investigations would have us believe. The main text of this book. The main text of this book is completely from the pen of Van Unnik; only the footnotes were missing. The editor has added footnotes and an extensive biographical-bibliographical introduction and appendices.

Psalmen- und Psalter-Rezeption im Frühjudentum : Rekonstruktion, Textbestand, Struktur und Pragmatik der Psalmenrolle 11QPsa aus Qumran /

: This volume is concerned with the great Psalms Scroll from cave 11 at Qumran as an example for the reception (\'Fortschreibung\') of biblical texts and books in early judaism. After methodological considerations the scroll is examined and reconstructed entirely in its material and textual extent for the first time. Detailed analyses of the text and the structure of this work show that 11QPsᵃ developed from the final redaction of the biblical book of Psalms. In its unique text form and arrangement of Psalms it was composed in a qumranic milieu and functions as a work for a davidic figure.
: On t.p. the "a" in "11QPsa" is superscript.

Thirty years of friendly connections between the Japanese Fichte Association and the International Fichte Society have found expression in volume 46 of Fichte Studien . It contains a collection of comparative studies between European and Japanese philosophy centered on transcendental philosophy (of Kant, Fichte and Husserl) and classical Mahayana Buddhism (plus Japan´s Kyoto school). Without denying irreconcilable differences between western and eastern thinking these essays demonstrate that western as well as eastern thinking is based on the universal ground of pre-reflexive cognition.

Ps-Athenagoras De Resurrectione : Datierung und Kontextualisierung der dem Apologeten Athenagoras zugeschriebenen Auferstehungsschrift /

: The authorship of De Resurrectione traditionally ascribed to the apologist Athenagoras, and its dating are controversial to this day. Nikolai Kiel proves in this study that the resurrection treatise is pseudonymous. By positioning the text within the intellectual-historical context of early resurrection debates, its origin can be dated to the first half of the Third century. The discourse horizon of the discussed tractate has been determined more precisely by means of a reconstruction of the constituent opposing position. Through his interpretative survey of De Resurrectione , the author has advanced the study of apologetic literature from the early patristic Era.

Jt. volume Chr. /

: Being the first monographic study of this kind in the field of Assyriology, this book comprises an investigation of Ancient Mesopotamian concepts of the human person. Concentrating on Akkadian cuneiform texts from the 2nd and 1st millennium BC, the author examines the characteristics and attributes attached to human beings and the notions of the person as a composite being through a semantic analysis of Akkadian terms for the body, body parts and aspects of the self, which can be termed \'souls\'. Through an examination of a wide range of textual sources and an interdisciplinary approach, this study shows that the Mesopotamian views of personhood share amazing similarities with those of the neighbouring ancient cultures, but often differ from our own. "...in short, as a piece of modern Assyriological scholarship it is very well done and a tribute to its author's capabilities and accomplishments." Benjamin R. Foster, Yale University

: The high priest Caiaphas is one of the important figures in biblical history who received little attention or sympathy in the judgement of posterity. Since the time of the old church the highest representative of the Jewish society in the time of Jesus was assessed as a wicked enemy of Jesus and the leading apostles in Jerusalem. This image obscures the religious and political efficiency of a man, who worked with great success in his office for a long period of eighteen years. What do we know about the historical Caiaphas? And what is the image of this man in the New Testament and afterwards? The present study tries to answer these questions in view of the history, the exegesis and the reception history.

Reflections on the early Christian history of religion = Erwägungen zur frühchristlichen religionsgeschichte /

: Reflections on the Early Christian History of Religion documents the results of two recent workshops on Martin Hengel's and Maria Schwemer's first volume of first volume of Geschichte des frühen Christentums ( Jesus und das Judentum [title of volume 1], Tübingen 2007) and Larry Hurtado's Lord Jesus Christ: Devotion to Jesus in Earliest Christianity (Grand Rapids 2003). The contributors, including Hengel himself, focus on problems and possibilities of studying and presenting Christian religion in Roman Antiquity. They discuss distinctive features of these two remarkable publications and some material aspects that illustrate the relationship between the historical study of early Christian religion, religious studies in general and New Testament studies in particular.

: This volume deals with Gregory of Nyssa's († 394 C.E.) soteriology as set forth in his handbook for catechetes. In part I-III the aim, method and structure of the Oratio catechetica are examined and the results are compared with Gregory's examples (Origen, Athanasius). Part IV presents the relationship between his theology ( theologia ) and soteriology ( oikonomia ) as well as the interrelated topics of that soteriology, thus describing the concept of oikonomia in the Oratio catechetica . Part V contrasts this concept with earlier works of Gregory and shows the developments of his thought. Part VI compares the teachings of Gregory with those of Methodius and Athanasius. The book is important for all those interested in early Christian thought and literature.

Die Fragmente : Der Brief an Julius von Rom /

: Marcellus of Ancyra (ca. 285/290 - circa 374) was one of the prominent bishops who fought against the Eusebians at the council of Nicaea. After this council, he was the first to attack them, and especially Asterius of Cappadocia. Only fragments of his work were preserved. These fragments, together with a letter which he wrote in 341 to Julius of Rome, the only undisputed works of Marcellus, are collected in this volume. The book opens with an introduction, contains the edition with German translation, notes and indices. In contrast to the former editions of Marcellus' works, this edition follows substantially the new order of the fragments established by K. Seibt (1994). As a result, Marcellus' fragments give an idea of how his work was originally structured.

Gottes Herrschaft : eine Analyse der Denkschrift (Jes 6, 1-9, 6) /

: This volume analyses the so-called 'Denkschrift' (Isa 6:1-9:6) by focussing on the image of God's Reign. It discusses the literary formation and shows that the idea of God's Reign is the red line connecting independent texts in former times. The study focuses on the literary formation and on the images of God's Reign. Subjects included are the investigation of the literary form of Isa 6, comparisons with neo-assyrian prophecies and royal texts from Egypt and the discussion of literary form and origin of the messianic announcement in Isa 9. The final description of the image of God's Reign gives a deeper insight in the development of theological ideas in ancient Israel and is useful for a closer view on Judah's history of religion between the 8th and 5th centuries B.C.E.

It offers an insightful collection of essays that have been gathered from the research efforts of numerous biblical and patristic scholars from around the world. The book seeks to explore questions that relate to the composition of the text itself, the history of the role and function of the Didache within early Christian circles, and the influence of the manuscript upon early Christian traditions and trends of thought. In addition to the numerous, individual investigations that are featured here, the collection includes a fresh translation of the text in English and a comprehensive, up-to-date bibliography of literature on the Didache.

Parrhesia : ancient and modern perspectives on freedom of speech /

: Freedom of speech is a fundamental right in many societies, yet also highly contested. As a right, it can only be appreciated if its historical development is taken into account. Parrhesia offers case studies in freedom of speech, its understanding and exercise throughout history. They enable researchers and policymakers alike to gain an awareness of the complexities, challenges and benefits of freedom of speech. The cases that have been selected are from the field of religion and theology, yet exemplary in character and able to shed light on freedom of speech in other parts of society. The impact of scripture in early Christianity /

: One of the most conspicuous innovations of early Christianity within Greco-Roman culture is its reliance upon a collection of authoritative texts. The ultimate author of Scripture was thought to be God Himself, whose will could and should be sought and found in these holy writings. For this reason it is not surprising that very soon these texts not only became the object of careful attention and scholarly study, but also put their stamp on the various forms and manifestations of early Christian life, such as martyrdom, asceticism, liturgy, art, and literature. This multifarious influence of Scripture is the subject of The Impact of Scripture in Early Christianity . It contains fourteen contributions, predominantly in English, by Belgian and Dutch scholars which have been gathered in a thematically ordered collection.

: Laubhütte Davids und Wolkensohn deals with the history of interpretation of Amos 9:11 - a passage which is regarded in both, Jewish and Christian tradition, as a messianic prediction. The book examines its interpretation and impact in Qumran and Rabbinic Judaism as well as in the New Testament, the Church Fathers, the Middle Ages, the Reformation and in the scientific discussion up to the present. Special emphasis is laid on (a) its usage at the Apostolic Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15) and its influence on the formation of the Christian Church and (b) hitherto overlooked explicit and important interpretations of scholars such as Nicholas de Lyre, Luther, Mercerus, Miegius and Harenberg who have already made use of the rabbinic messianic interpretation of this passage. Besides, a new interpretation of Amos 9:11-15 in its historical Old Testament context is offered.
