Restored to our destiny : eschatology and the image of god in herman bavinck's reformed dogmatics.

: A close conceptual analysis of Herman Bavinck's (1854-1921) four-volume Reformed Dogmatics, this book explores what is broadly understood as the central motif of his work, the "organic" relationship between nature and grace, and highlights an overlooked aspect to this motif. Bavinck's view of nature and grace is not only rooted in his Trinitarian theology, but, more importantly, in his covenant theology. Exploring Bavinck's link between the doctrine of the imago Dei to an eschatology uniquely provided by Reformed covenant theology, this book serves to illumine the rationale behind his signature dogma that "grace restores and perfects nature." Given the link between the nature/grace motif and covenant theology, this book raises the question whether the one can stand without the other.

The Everlasting Gospel : The Significance of Eschatology in the Development of Pentecostal Thought /

: How did Pentecostalism become the fastest growing movement within Christendom in the twentieth century? Faupel contends that Pentecostalism was propelled onto the world stage when early adherents felt commissioned by God to announce that Christ would soon return to establish his kingdom on earth. The gift of tongues would equip them supernaturally to proclaim this message to the nations in the language of the people. Although this expectation was soon disproved, the eschatological hope nevertheless remained the motivating force for Pentecostalism's rapid growth. This book has been prescribed reading on the Pentecostal hope for many years. This edition makes it available once again to a worldwide readership.

Apocalyptic Time /

: Millennial movements are characterized by their nature and perception of time, and the ways in which these groups confront inevitable disappointment and then return to "normal" time. This is the theme for the book Apocalyptic Time . The volume consists of revised essays based on presentations made at an international conference devoted to that theme. Authors adopt a number of disciplinary approaches to the topic, analyzing millennial movements from the three Abrahamic faiths, as well as from the East. This book will be of particular interest to students of millennial movements, who wish to benefit from the comprehensive and comparative view it gives of the phenomenon, based on a wide variety of cases. This work greatly contributes to the theory of millennialism, by supplying specific data and theoretical reflection.

The heavenly book motif in Judeo-Christian apocalypses 200 BCE-200 CE.

: Books and writing, according to Jacques Derrida, are always concerned with questions of life and death. Nowhere is this more true than regarding the heavenly book motif, which plays an important role in early Judeo-Christian literature, and particularly in apocalypses. This book identifies four sub-types of the motif-the books of life, deeds, fate, and action-and examines their development and function primarily in Jewish and Christian apocalypses. It argues that the overarching function of the motif is to signify life and death for those inscribed: earthly life and death in its early appearances and eternal destiny in later texts. The first full-length analysis of the heavenly book motif in English, this study highlights a vital element of the genre apocalypse.

Towards a Pentecostal Eschatology : Discerning the Way Forward /

: Growing out of the need to articulate an eschatology that is consistent with the theological beliefs, spiritual experience, and hermeneutical insights of the Pentecostal movement, Toward a Pentecostal Eschatology applies an interdisciplinary approach to the subject, integrating historical, biblical, and theological studies. After providing a comprehensive review of the current state of Pentecostal eschatology, the study explores the periodical literature of the earliest years of the movement, understanding this period to be the heart or originating source of the tradition. Drawing upon insights gained from this exploration, the boundaries for discerning a contemporary Pentecostal eschatology are established and a constructive, biblical-theological contribution to this subject is offered, focused upon a fresh reading of Revelation 21-22 and framed around the narrative testimony of the fivefold gospel that emerges from the heart of the tradition.

Paul, John, and apocalyptic eschatology : studies in honour of Martinus C. de Boer /

: Paul, John, and Apocalyptic Eschatology offers fresh studies by leading New Testament scholars. It considers Paul's use of tradition, his views on Christian life in the light of mysticism and eschatology. It also discusses the identity formation of the "Johannine community" and the role of "exaltation" in the Fourth Gospel. The focus on apocalyptic eschatology is broadened by studies on the reception of Pauline eschatology, the dating of Revelation, and chiliasm. The collection is complemented by a study on the text of John 3:13 and one on the coinage of the name "Ambrosiaster."

Locating Hell in Islamic traditions /

: Islam is often seen as a religious tradition in which hell does not play a particularly prominent role. This volume challenges this hackneyed view. Locating Hell in Islamic Traditions is the first book-length analytic study of the Muslim hell. It maps out a broad spectrum of Islamic attitudes toward hell, from the Quranic vision(s) of hell to the pious cultivation of the fear of the afterlife, theological speculations, metaphorical and psychological understandings, and the modern transformations of hell. King, priest, prophet : positive eschatological protagonists of the Qumran library /

: Among the newly published texts of the Qumran Library there are a good number with eschatological content. Some of these texts relate the eschatological activity of certain figures who seem to play an important role in the events of the eschaton. This study explores these figures. The material of this study is divided into two main parts. The first is analytical, in which the related textual material is investigated, each passage in turn. The second, systematic section contains the evaluation and discussion of the data provided by the analyses of the first part. These analyses are especially relevant for scholars of both the Old and New Testaments and for all those interested in early Jewish thought at the turn of the era.
