Loaves, beds, plants and Osiris : considerations about the emergence of the cult of Osiris /

Eastern Han (AD 25-220) tombs in Sichuan /

: This work explores the many factors underlying the extended popularity of the cliff tomb, a local burial form in the Sichuan Basin in China during the Eastern Han dynasty (AD 25-220). The development of the cliff tomb was linked to a complex set of connections involved with burial forms, and continued through associations with many other contemporary burial practices: brick chamber tombs, stone chamber tombs, and princely rock-cut tombs. These connections and links formed to a large extent through the incorporation of the Sichuan region within the Empire, which began in the fourth century BC.

The festivals of Opet, the Valley, and the New Year : their socio-religious functions /

: This title compares the religious and social functions of the festivals of Opet, the Valley and the New Year, the first two of which were often regarded by the Egyptians as a pair; the New Year Festival stands out on account of its corpus of surviving material and importance. Until now, detailed study of the New Year Festival has only been carried out with reference to the Greco-Roman period; this study turns its attention to the New Kingdom. The book analyses the broad perspectives that encompass Egyptian religion and cult practices which provided the context not only for worship and prayer, but also for the formation of social identity and responsibility. The festivals are examined in the whole together with their settings in the religious and urban landscapes. The best example is New Kingdom Thebes where large temples and burial sites survive intact today with processional routes connecting some of them.

Rise of the Hyksos : Egypt and the Levant from the middle kingdom to the early second intermediate period /

: Manetho's obscure reference to a race of invaders has been a constant source of debate and controversy. But who are these invaders? They are named the 'Hyksos'. The Hyksos are correlated with the fifteenth dynasty of the second intermediate period, a time characterised by the destabilisation and regionalisation of the Egyptian state. Several scholars have pondered over their victory and rule in Egypt, from the manner in which they entered Egypt and the means with which they claimed the throne to their final expulsion from the land. This book assesses their rise to power, exploring the preliminary stages that enabled the Hyksos to gain control over a portion of Egyptian territory and thus to merit a small mention in Manetho's history.

Die Römische Villa als Indikator provinzialer Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftsstrukturen /

: The investigation of the Roman villa and its economic structures in the western provinces of the Roman Empire has clearly shown that rural settlement developed at different paces and intensities that largely depended on the specific region in which a villa landscape was intended and created. The progress of Romanisation was strongly linked to the existence of pre- Roman infrastructure in a given region. This existing infrastructure was at first acquired and successively intensified by the Romans. In its sum, the Roman villa economy was a complex and dynamic system that in its configuration vastly differed, according to the specific province. Still, the system essentially served clear functional purposes such as self-subsistence and, ideally, surplus production for the supply of the Roman military in newly conquered provinces.

Dating the tombs of the Egyptian Old Kingdom /

: The decorated tombs of the Egyptian Old Kingdom offer detailed knowledge of a society that in all probability was the first nation state in history. Yet scholars continue to find it difficult to access the full potential of this great body of data because so few of the tombs can be dated with sufficient precision to provide a relative chronology for the evidence they offer. The system of dating these monuments presented here builds on the work of previous scholars. In this volume the author explains how the dating method was devised. This required establishing 'life-spans' for 104 criteria, features drawn from tomb iconography.

Prepared for eternity : a study of human embalming techniques in ancient Egypt using computerised tomography scans of mummies /

: Robert Loynes presents analyses of 60 CT scans of ancient Egyptian human mummies, collected from museums throughout the UK and continental Europe. The effect is that of performing 'virtual autopsies', allowing techniques of mummification to be examined. The historical age of the mummies ranges from the Middle Kingdom to the Roman period. Several observations are made regarding the preparation of mummies and confirmation of previously described themes is tempered by the observation of variations probably indicating individual workshop practices.

Quarrying in western Norway : an archaeological study of production and distribution in the Viking period and Middle Ages /

: The theme of this study is the large-scale exploitation of different stone products that took place in Norway during the Viking age and the Middle Ages (c. AD 800-1500). The research is based on analyses of two different quarry landscapes in western Norway: the quernstone quarries in Hyllestad, Sogn og Fjordane, and the bakestone quarries in Olve and Hatlestrand, Hordaland. The centre of attention is the production of utility artefacts: quernstones, millstones and bakestones, as well as more symbolic products such as stone crosses.

This book aims to employ and illustrate the unique strengths of burial evidence and its contribution to the understanding of social identity and status in the Classical and Hellenistic Northern Peloponnese.
