For the first time together in one volume all the papers on Greek colonization published by A. J. Graham over the last forty years. Some of these appeared in publications difficult of access. They will all now be widely available, and thus complement the author's Colony and Mother City in Ancient Greece and his two chapters on the subject in Cambridge Ancient History III.3, second edition. In addition the volume contains one new paper, not previously published, entitled 'Thasian Controversies' . The published papers are reproduced unchanged, except for the correction of misprints, and the original page-numbering is indicated. All the original figures and illustrations are included. There is a comprehensive, analytical, index.

In Kontinuität und Wandel des Senatorenstandes im Zeitalter der Soldatenkaiser untersucht Nikolas Hächler die Zusammensetzung, Funktion und Bedeutung des ordo senatorius zwischen 235-284 n. Chr., als das Imperium Romanum eine Reihe tiefgreifender Veränderungen durchlief. Grundlage der vorliegenden Studie stellt eine prosopographische Zusammenstellung dar, in welcher Lebensläufe senatorischer Amtsträger ausgehend von aktuell bekannten Quellenzeugnissen rekonstruiert werden. Obschon militärische Spitzenfunktionen im Laufe des 3. Jhs. zusehends von Rittern anstelle von Senatoren ausgeübt wurden und der ordo amplissimus damit an Bedeutung verlor, stellt sich bei näherer Betrachtung tatsächlich heraus, dass ihm für den Erhalt des Römischen Reiches während der so genannten Reichskrise noch immer grundlegend stabilisierende Funktionen zukamen. In Kontinuität und Wandel des Senatorenstandes im Zeitalter der Soldatenkaiser Nikolas Hächler observes the composition, function and general importance of the ordo senatorius during 235-284 C.E. when the Roman Empire was affected by a series of radical changes. The study is grounded on a prosopographical analysis, in which Hächler presents a reconstruction of senatorial cursus based on the currently known source material. Although the most important functions within the Roman army were gradually filled by members of the ordo equester instead of viri clarissimi and the senatorial order thereby suffered a loss of importance during the Third century, it remained of utmost significance for the stability of the Imperium Romanum in times of crisis.

The arguments within the contemporary literature paint a clear picture: popular discourse is marked with extreme partisanship and polarization, threatening democracy, tolerance, diversity, pluralism, and cooperation. Polarization simplifies and deforms language, ideas, and people. Polarization reduces the complexities of social life into an oppositional binary based on crude distinctions revolving around partial and harmful reified conceptions of self and other. Since the egocentric ''us versus them" narratives catalyze conflicts which tend to violence, polarization is itself a cause of violence. The project of peace, then, is aided by the project of depolarization. But what can we do to bring about a transformation away from polarity to peace? What are the real polarities obscuring the path to peace? Is it a question of freedom versus control? Is it one of absolutism versus open-mindedness? Is it good versus evil? In a time of increasingly poisonous national politics, widening tribal polarity, and fragmented and fragmenting communities, what sense does it even make to appeal to reason, discourse, and compromise? Japan, Russia, and Turkey are major examples of countries with different ethnic, religious, and cultural background that embarked on the path of modernization without having been colonized by a Western country. In all three cases, national consciousness has played a significant role in this context. The project of Modernity is obviously of European origin, but is it essentially European? Does modernization imply loss of a country's cultural or national identity? If so, what is the "fate" of the modernization process in these cases? The presence of the idea and reality of civil society can be considered a real marker of Modernity in this respect, because it presupposes the development of liberalism, individualism and human rights. But are these compatible with nationalism and with the idea of a national religion? These questions are the more pressing, as Japan is considered part of the Western world in many respects, and Russia and Turkey are defining their relation to the European Union in different ways.
