Terence between late antiquity and the age of printing : illustration, commentary and performance /

: Terence between Late Antiquity and the Age of Printing investigates the Medieval and Early Renaissance reception of Terence in highly innovative ways, combining the diverse but interrelated strands of textual criticism, illustrative tradition, and performance. The plays of Terence seem to have remained unperformed until the Renaissance, but they were a central text for educators in Western Europe. Manuscripts of the plays contained scholarship and illustrations which were initially inspired by Late Antique models, and which were constantly transformed in response to contemporary thought. The contributions in this work deal with these topics, as well as the earliest printed editions of Terence, theatrical revivals in Northern Italy, and the readership of Terence throughout the Early Middle Ages.
: "[The book] grew out of a core of papers first presented at the conference Text, Illustration, Revival: Ancient Drama from Late Antiquity to 1550, which the two editors organised at the University of Melbourne from 13 to 15 July, 2011." -- Preface. : 1 online resource (xiii, 293 pages) : color illustrations. : Includes bibliographical references (p. 251-275) and indexes. : 9789004289499 : Available to subscribing member institutions only.

A new companion to Homer /

: This volume is the first English-language survey of Homeric studies to appear for more than a generation, and the first such work to attempt to cover all fields comprehensively. Thirty leading scholars from Europe and America provide short, authoritative overviews of the state of knowledge and current controversies in the many specialist divisions in Homeric studies. The chapters pay equal attention to literary, mythological, linguistic, historical, and archaeological topics, ranging from such long-established problems as the \'Homeric Question\' to newer issues like the relevance of narratology and computer-assisted quantification. The collection, the third publication in Brill's handbook series, The Classical Tradition , will be valuable at every level of study - from the general student of literature to the Homeric specialist seeking a general understanding of the latest developments across the whole range of Homeric scholarship.

A companion to the study of Virgil /

: This book is not yet another introduction to Virgil's poetry. The editor and three contributors offer a guide to the key problems and to the most intelligent discussions. They do not hesitate to point out what we do not know, and where more work needs to be done. Apart from ample discussion of the poems and the main issues they raise, the book offers chapters on the life of Virgil, his style, and his influence on late Latin epic.

Annaeana tragica : notes on the text of Seneca's tragedies /

: This volume is a companion to the author's new Loeb edition of Seneca's tragedies (vol. 1, 2002; volume 2, 2004). It offers reasons for his editorial choices, and explains his interpretations of the text as reflected in his translation. Hercules Oetanus and Octavia , now generally regarded as imitations of Senecan drama, are both included. The volume is intended to be read alongside Otto Zwierlein's Kritische Kommentar , published in 1986. In the intervening years there has been much new work pertaining to Seneca's text, including full-scale editions with commentary on individual plays, such as Keulen's Troades , Töchterle's Oedipus and Ferri's Octavia . Annaeana Tragica seeks to supplement and advance Zwierlein's work in the light of this new material. An appendix reviews the scholarly controversy concerning the anapaestic odes of these plays, and offers fresh evidence relevant to the issue.

Philitas of Cos /

: This volume is an edition of the poetical and grammatical fragments of Philitas of Cos, the early-Hellenistic scholar and poet who served as an exemplary model for the great Alexandrian poets. His output includes frivolous Hermes and Demeter which both had fundamental impact on later metapoetic imagery, and the Ataktoi Glossai , a glossary interpreting mainly Homeric idiom in pre-Aristarchean fashion. The body of the book consists of an Introduction discussing life, literary affiliations and metre; an edition of testimonies and fragments along with a commentary elucidating matters of language and influence on the scholar-poets, Propertius and Longus. The study of Philitas is brought up to date with new testimonies and new neglected sources for the fragments. Recent papyrological findings, verse inscriptions, lexicographic sources and inscriptions from Cos are taken into consideration. Passages dubiously ascribed to Philitas are discussed. The book closes with three Appendices and comprehensive Indexes.
