After decades of controversy, there is now a growing consensus that Greek warfare was not singular and simple, but complex and multiform. In this volume, emerging and established scholars build on this consensus to explore Greek warfare beyond its traditional focus on hoplites and the phalanx. We expand the chronological limits back into the Iron Age, the geographical limits to the central and eastern Mediterranean, and the operational limits to include cavalry, light-armed troops, and sieges. We also look beyond the battlefield at integral aspects of warfare including religion, the experiences of women, and the recovery of the war dead.

The story of besieged people, along with their customs, treatment by the winners, and consequences of the conquest are also discussed. Based on the combination of archaeology, iconography, philology and ethnographical comparisons, the analysis of the particular assets of siege-engines or architectural features are developed, along with the best means employed at that time to overcome them. De Backer proposes more than a simple census of all the means known so far, he also develops and enhances our knowledge of siege-warfare in a pragmatic and efficient manner.

In Classical Greek Tactics: A Cultural History , Roel Konijnendijk re-examines the literary evidence for the battle tactics and tactical thought of the Greeks during the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Rejecting the traditional image of limited, ritualised battle, Konijnendijk sketches a world of brutally destructive engagements, restricted only by the stubborn amateurism of the men who fought. The resulting model of hoplite battle does away with most received wisdom about the nature of Greek battle tactics, and redefines the way they reflected the values of Greek culture as a whole.

Trotz ihrer Bedeutung ist die Geschichte dieser Operationen bislang nicht systematisch aufgearbeitet worden. Rome became the Mediterranean's premier sea power already during the late Republic, but it only established a permanent naval presence in North-Western Europe during the early Principate. In that period it mastered the full spectrum of naval warfare, undertaking large-scale naval operations that involved hundreds of ships and thousands of men. Despite the impact of these operations, their history has never been systematically investigated. Die römische Armee auf dem Oceanus offers for the first time an operational history of Roman naval forces in North-Western Europe and provides an in-depth analysis of two important large-scale naval operation types - transport operations and amphibious assaults.
